To think that if a thread is pulled due to troll hunting

and MNHQ have evidence/reason to suspect that the poster is either a troll or not a troll, it would be nice if we could be told. or something! I'd certainly like to know if someone had taken me for a mug.

I would like it if:

The thread is blocked, as in no one can post any additional messages.

The final message is from MNHQ explaining that the op was a troll.

The thread is left up there for a period of, say, 24 hours, for the purpose of allowing others who may have been in a similar situation to the op to be able to access all of the advice that other MNetters have, in good faith, posted there.

But this has been discussed before and it never goes anywhere.

Hello.

We do understand your frustration with this one and we do, when possible, post to confirm that we have been visited by the hairy-handed.

But sometimes it's not as simple as that - and it can take a while to be absolutely sure that someone is trolling.

And our policy is always to err on the side of benefit of the doubt in the meantime. That's, essentially, why trollhunting breaks the rules.

How do MNHQ know if someone is a troll?

I could make up a story about green four eyed aliens eating all my knickers off the washing line. You could report my post but unless MNHQ are going to send someone round to inspect my knickers how would they actually know whether I was trolling?

I've often seen posts from MNHQ saying they deleted a thread because the OP 'wasn't what they appeared to be'.

Or words to that effect.

Yes. We have now got the ability to suspend threads and/or to post up a "this was a troll" message.

It's just that the buttons don't work at the moment. As I found out tonight. Blush

But how could it be 100% proved that somebody is a troll?
I was "enjoying" that thread - maybe that is the wrong word

Yes, they are. Unless they are insulting/mocking/trollhunting about/rehashing deleted posts from the other thread/posters on the other thread.

I could make up a story about someone stealing my washing but no-one would actually want to steal it.
That means i need to go shopping.
Or if i was a troll i would just pretend i'd been shopping.
Wtf am i on about.

As we posted before deleting it, we had tried to suspend the thread but the button didn't work

Then it all rather descended into a trollhunting/personal-attack-fest, so we deleted.

And no, at the moment, we have no reason to think the OP is a troll. But we're grateful to all who reported.
