just thinking today of a piece of advice that my ex MIL gave me .she said that if you do not wear tights in winter i would not have any children (no tights and two kids later). wondered if you people had any further gems of wisdom Grin

My mum used to lock my siblings in her room if they were having a night terror to 'toughen' them up Hmm She was a big believer in the 'letting them cry it out' mantra from birth. Not to 'mature lungs' but because 'they need to learn that I won't come to them all the time if they need help.'

Yeah... a newborn that needs feeding/changing/winding can totally understand that life lesson Angry

I haven't spoken to her in 2 years and I'm 36 weeks pg so I don't want to think about the 'pearls' of wisdom she might be giving me if I was still talking to her!

JustSpiro

I suffer from vasovagal syncope and have to avoid hot baths/saunas as my BP drops v easily so that ones not all that mental... the daily soaks making you overweight is crazy though!

CelstialNavigation · 19/09/2012 23:13

When I reach a sufficiently advanced age i am going to travel around on buses and dispense random illogical advice to strangers. It shall be my way of "giving back" for the gift of my bus pass. I am so looking forward to it.

JustSpiro · 19/09/2012 23:16

Amy - I can see that with hot baths - her issue is with Radox, which she firmly believes is so potent it can make a grown man of over 6 ft tall keel over within minutes!

Seenenoughtoknow · 19/09/2012 23:23

I have literally cried laughing and nearly woken baby sleeping beside me reading these...absolute gems!

amybelle1990 · 19/09/2012 23:27

JustSprio That's hilarious! Grin

JustSpiro · 19/09/2012 23:34

I'm sure there are plenty more...actually just thought of one - I've had an underactive thyroid for over ten years.

It doesn't matter how often or how clearly I explain to her it is a lifelong condition, like diabetes for instance, she is forever telling me that it can't be good for me to keep taking the tablets and asking when am I going to stop or I'll get addicted Hmm.

KentuckyFriedChildren · 20/09/2012 00:02

Ha! spiro my mil said similar when I was pregnant "taking all those pills is bad for baby. You should stop it at once"
Yes taking all those totally essential life saving drugs is far worse for baby than me dying Hmm

themiss · 20/09/2012 00:39

this thread made me think of this little note of 'wisdom ' I saw on fb yesterday

"Dear Mother-In-Law,
I don't need you to teach me how to handle my children.
I live with one of yours, and he needs a lot of improvement!"

GranToAirMissiles · 20/09/2012 00:48

Don't have a cat, because there is a worldwide crop shortage, and they put cereal in cat food.

GranToAirMissiles · 20/09/2012 00:51

"Dear Mother-In-Law,
I don't need you to teach me how to handle my children.
I live with one of yours, and he needs a lot of improvement!"

Brilliant, themiss.

sashh · 20/09/2012 04:37

Don't fall asleep on a plane, if a man sitting next to you falls asleep you have to marry him.

Dappylittlemomma · 20/09/2012 05:37

Do not give a poorly/ sicky baby milk it'll curl in the stomach, warm water is all she needs- this was directed by my well meaning MIL towards my BF underweight newborn.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 20/09/2012 07:51

MIL told me that DC shouldnt have the MMR because: "It'll make them catch Autism". Confused I gave her this face Hmm and told her to have another drink stupid bat . Even if you do believe there is a link between Autism and the MMR AFAIK you can not "catch" Autism. It's not a bloody cold.

She also told me that "babies can never be too warm". Yeah whatever. Try telling that to the ones that got sick or worse from overheating. This was one of the reasons I never left DD alone with her in that first year. She kept swaddling her in tonnes of blankets and leaving her next to the radiator. Poor DD was like this Angry after i left her for half an hour while I had a bath!

JustSpiro · 20/09/2012 07:58

My MIL told me that when DD cried, if she'd been fed and was clean I should wrap her up, stick her in her pram at the end of the garden and get on with the housework.

Needless to say that little contribution was ignored...

caboodles · 20/09/2012 08:09

Oooooh these are great! Grin

When I was 8 we went to visit my Gran and the 'old aunties' - not sure how they are related, but certainly old anyway. My little brother was at the stage where he was desperate to walk but hadn't quite got the balance yet. Our favourite thing to do together was for me to hold him up by the hands and help him walk - he loved it. One of the aunties was horrified and turned to my DM, 'DM, you really must stop her doing that, she'll give him rickets - he'll end up bow-legged!' Hmm

caboodles · 20/09/2012 08:11

JustSpiro, is your MIL Scottish? Just asking, because my Df was left outside (in the alley) all day in his pram by my DG. It was the way they did it then, apparently Shock

NoobytheWaspSlayer · 20/09/2012 08:20

Don't hang washing out when you're pregnant the baby will strangle on the umbilical cord!!!

from my lovely daffy neighbour. To be fair I think that one probably originated from women with low blood pressure in pregnancy.. Or just a way out of doing washing.

ddubsgirl · 20/09/2012 08:25

the not letting boys cry is its spose to cause hernias, the daught on the back is a load of crap too,you dont get kidney stones from that lol

HoobleDooble · 20/09/2012 08:27

My GM used to tell me not to lean against the radiator at home because "if it gets warm it will melt all the bone marrow in your spine".

loopylou6 · 20/09/2012 08:31

Don't go outside with wet hair, it'll make you catch a cold Hmm

ratbagcatbag · 20/09/2012 08:35

My mother who obviously comes from an odd family, told me that when I went I water my period stopped so it was fine to go swimming and stuff still, and I unfortunately believed her (grim i know) equally in the bath your period stops.
Honestly I have no idea where she got these from.

Also whe shopping we were third in line at the checkout, behind a coloured gentleman and an old lady, as the lady went through it turns out she'd overspent so was deciding to return some cream cakes shed bought, the guy in front of us got some money out, paid for the cream cakes and said have a little treat on me. After we got out the shop mum said to me, wow I didn't know black people could be like that Shock (her parents very racist, my mum isn't just ignorant to it) I gave her a right rollicking :) she's got better as me and my bro have educated her.

caboodles · 20/09/2012 08:43

ratbagcatbag - when I had my sex ed at school, the nurse told me that your period stops in the water!!! Glad I never tested the theory

ENormaSnob · 20/09/2012 08:54

Girls who don't wear socks get cystitis.

ratbagcatbag · 20/09/2012 08:55

Playing with egg shells gives you warts.
