Next door neighbour asked me yesterday if she could put me down as the second driver on her new car.

Had no idea what she was talking about so she whipped out a Ford brochure and informed me that she is getting a new Meriva and needs to put someone down as a second driver, but her Mum lives 6 miles away.

Still not got to the bottom of why she needs a second driver, but she did tell me that she's entitled to the car because she's got bad knees, in fact she says she has no knee caps at all! Confused

Neighbour and I attend a slimming class together, and she needs to lose several stone, (which can't be helping her knees) but her weight doesn't stop her walking with me, 6-7 miles, up and down hills, with a pushchair, 3 times a week, and attending a Zumba class with me. Nor does it stop her having regular stalls at bootfairs from 6am til 2pm on Sundays.

Surely if she can manage all that, she shouldn't be entitled to a new car for her 'disability' when so many other, genuinely disabled people struggle to get any help at all? She doesn't even use her current car very often, she walks everywhere!

Thank you thumbwitch.

5inthebed · 19/09/2012 16:29

You don't need a second driver to get a motability car. Most odd.

DogsCock · 19/09/2012 16:31

thanks hecate, I wasn't sure if this is what the OP is getting at?

katykuns · 19/09/2012 16:33

When will there be some new stuff on these threads? It just ends up being about fucking goats. Change the record please?

OP is asking for advice, not claiming that everyone in receipt of DLA are some fraudulent criminal scum.

Some of this is just too predictable.

TroublesomeEx · 19/09/2012 16:33

BalloonTwister If you have a car through motability it gets replaced every 3 years (when you have to choose a new one).

I don't know for definite (it's my dad who gets it and he was a bit vague but that's understandable given the level of morphine he's on!) but I think it's because they have to minimise the risk of breakdowns or MOT failings. It needs to be guaranteed roadworthy.

That would explain why she's looking at another car when her current one isn't even 3years old yet.

Narked · 19/09/2012 16:34

As I said. Report it or get over it. If this person actually exists that is.

Threads like these just stir up shit and perpetuate the myth that people are 'faking' claims. This may happen in a tiny number of cases, but the vast majority of people who suffer daily abuse from fuckwits who accuse them of scamming and the hundreds of people who are having their benefits removed by the 'improved' system are genuine claimants.

I mentioned a cat,though

ShirtyKnot · 19/09/2012 16:35

"Change the record please?"

I agree KatyKins. Could everyone please stop being awfully misinformed about the levels of fraudulent claims in the welfare system please?

It's very boring!

What advice do you think she's asking for exactly Katy?

Enlighten us.

I'm sorry, I don't have her neighbours medical records to hand. If she thinks it's a false claim and is bothered she can report it and an investigation will be started. Otherwise, what exactly can a bunch of strangers on the internet do???

crazynanna · 19/09/2012 16:37

My cat has all 4 knees missing...and drives a toyota mini

Grin
madmouse · 19/09/2012 16:39

Folkgirl no it is simpler than that - contrary to popular belief Motability is a lease scheme run on commercial lines and it is common to resell lease cars at 3 years because that's where the balance is best in terms of resale value.

OP - report her if you must if your post is genuine which I doubt. I have to fill in the dratted DLA form for my child and it is 40+ pages and a lot of tears, and I'm a lawyer. Then there's letters from doctors on top. Very very few people fraudulently claim DLA and the test for high rate mobility is high.

The advice is:
If she thinks the person is making a fraudulent claim, report it.

No one on MN can tell the op if the person is claiming fraudulently but they can, and have, offered reasons why the person may not appear severely disabled.
They have also explained how hard it is to get HR mobility.

The op has managed to switch on her pc and find MN, she can therfore find out how to report benefit fraud.

And Pinkforever should report all the people she knows who are claiming fraudulently and stop colluding with them.

ColouringIn · 19/09/2012 16:41

If this person actually exists then report her...she has to be unable or virtually unable to walk to get HRM. You don't get that rate for just any reason.

TroublesomeEx · 19/09/2012 16:43

madmouse thanks for the clarification! I understood about it being a lease scheme. It was my dad's biggest consideration when he first got a motability car - the fact he wouldn't actually own it!

madmouse · 19/09/2012 16:44

By the way that 'popular belief' was not a dig at you (just reading it back) - jsut that many people seem to think it's tax payer funded...

TroublesomeEx · 19/09/2012 16:46

ha, no didn't take it personally!

The resale value hadn't occurred to me. But it makes complete sense.

dottyspotty2 · 19/09/2012 16:46

Not all motability are lease you can also buy on it

Dawndonna · 19/09/2012 16:47

And fluffy should stop coming out with complete shite. Nobody in the history of the world got HR DLA for fucking corns. Perhaps he just doesn't want to discuss his medical condition in depth with you. He may have chronic prostatitis or epidydimytis for all you know.

dottyspotty2 · 19/09/2012 16:47

Just means you have all costs to cover ypurself

katykuns · 19/09/2012 16:47

They are asking advice on whether she should report them... it's clear the OP doesn't know very much about motability schemes or DLA, and perhaps what even 'counts' as a disability in order to claim.
I don't see the need for sarcasm and ancient jokes that are done on every thread about disability.
Also, just because the number of fraudulent claims is low, doesn't mean that this definitely isn't fraudulent does it?

Thumbwitch · 19/09/2012 16:48

I thought the 3year thing was for the same reason that company fleet cars are usually changed after 3 years - because that's when they start needing MOTs, so it's best to change them for new ones and the fleet/hire company sell them on.
