Next door neighbour asked me yesterday if she could put me down as the second driver on her new car.

Had no idea what she was talking about so she whipped out a Ford brochure and informed me that she is getting a new Meriva and needs to put someone down as a second driver, but her Mum lives 6 miles away.

Still not got to the bottom of why she needs a second driver, but she did tell me that she's entitled to the car because she's got bad knees, in fact she says she has no knee caps at all! Confused

Neighbour and I attend a slimming class together, and she needs to lose several stone, (which can't be helping her knees) but her weight doesn't stop her walking with me, 6-7 miles, up and down hills, with a pushchair, 3 times a week, and attending a Zumba class with me. Nor does it stop her having regular stalls at bootfairs from 6am til 2pm on Sundays.

Surely if she can manage all that, she shouldn't be entitled to a new car for her 'disability' when so many other, genuinely disabled people struggle to get any help at all? She doesn't even use her current car very often, she walks everywhere!

really?

you think that's below the belt?

i tell you what's below the belt, all this shite we have to put up with on a daily basis about whether our family members LOOK disabled enough for AN Other to decide whether they are entitled to a bit of extra cash that might pay for their drugs, to park a bit nearer the edge of a shopping centre car park

ShirtyKnot · 19/09/2012 16:16

Maybe crashdoll, because some of us are sick to the back teeth of this sort of SHIT masquerading as "concern" and "good citizenship"

There are a thousand ways of finding out how to dob someone in the the authorities. Rocking up on AIBU and asking this sort of question always, ALWAYS ends up upsetting people who fight tooth and fucking NAIL for their DLA and mobility funds and always, ALWAYS ends up in a massive bunfight where idiots bash at their keyboards and froth at the mouth with jealousy of the most vulnerable people in our society.

It's fucking sickening.

crashdollGOLD · 19/09/2012 16:17

No one is saying it's easy to claim but that a shitty few do slip through the net.

HecateHarshPants · 19/09/2012 16:17

If her current one is 3 years old then she's likely coming to the end of her contract (motability Lease is 3 years) so she'll be due to swap her car.

Oh here we go again with the noone ever commits benefit fraud by claiming to be ill/mad/a junkie/an alkie. Honestly I wonder where most of you live-I see people like this every day. Many of them are members of my family ffs! and yet their are the same old group on here who if anyone dares to suggest that benefit fraud is being commited get the same old cries of goat shite. Get a new joke ladies-this one is wearing thin.....

Noqontrol · 19/09/2012 16:18

Its incredibly hard to claim the higher rate of dla, which she must be on. If she's got it then I would say she's probably entitled to it. Theres probably something more there than you are aware of.

crashdollGOLD · 19/09/2012 16:19

Ok fair enough, Shirty, I get your point. I do see and know the other side. However, I also acknowledge that there are a few who do scam the system. Granted, not as many as the tabloids seem to think but still, a few real cases.

ShirtyKnot · 19/09/2012 16:19

A shitty 4% crashdoll. FOUR PERCENT and the government are committed to cutting 20% of claims.

Maybe have a little think about why this sort of disability bashing and mistrust is being spread around.

threeOrangesocksmorgan · 19/09/2012 16:20

and here is the legacy of the paralympics

ShirtyKnot · 19/09/2012 16:20

Banging your usual drum are you. Why not try playing a trombone for a change?

crashdollGOLD · 19/09/2012 16:20

But this thread isn't about the government. I do have major rage at the DLA (and other) cuts but that isn't about this.

tittytittyhanghang · 19/09/2012 16:21

what pink said

Pinkforever · 19/09/2012 16:21

Right back at you shirley....

Dawndonna · 19/09/2012 16:23

She may have told you that there was a problem with her knees because she was too embarrassed to tell you what her real problem is.
Could be all sorts of things, so until you know anything for definite, butt out!

Pinkforever · 19/09/2012 16:23

Shirley-the only one getting their knickers in a twist is you....

ShirtyKnot · 19/09/2012 16:25

Not really Pink. I'm not a terrible person you see, so I'm able to read this sort of stuff and not use it as an excuse to roll out a load of whiging shit about the poor.

Glad to hear you're thinking about my knickers though.

Fluffycloud - can't answer for the OP's neighbour but my friend's thigh muscles are, I believe, attached to the bones of the lower leg. She's had over 28 ops on her knees though, since she was a child - and she doesn't have plastic kneecaps because those weren't invented when she was a child (she's in her 70s now).

MammaTJisWearingGold · 19/09/2012 16:25

I know someone who claimed DLA at the higher rate. Most days she could walk really well. People were really judgemental abaout it. Some days she would not be able to move from her bed. Quite honestly, I would rather be me than her.

DogsCock · 19/09/2012 16:26

Can someone answer my genuine question.

IF someone was committing fraud and someone else genuinely put their name down as a second driver, what would be the consequence for them?

dottyspotty2 · 19/09/2012 16:26

Op you mentioned reporting her on first page on my phone so can't link

HecateHarshPants · 19/09/2012 16:26

No idea, Dogs. Probably nothing, they'd just need to say they had no idea it wasn't genuine, I assume.
