I live in a council flat - do not judge me!

DS2 had a friend round for tea yesterday (I brought them from school). When his mum picked him up she seemed rather perturbed that we live in a 3rd floor council flat in a shitty area of town. She was very red faced and flustered (maybe from the walk up the stairs which I have to do with a toddler and shopping at least 3 times a day?) and rather short with me saying 'How on earth did you end up living here'.

Now my DS has been attending his school for 5 years (now in Yr6) in a fairly affluent area as we used to live in this affluent area ourselves! We have never had this lad round before but DS has always played with him and I have always said 'hi' to his mum.

It took a lot of courage to invite a school friend of the DCs round as I am already very upset about living here so this has just made me feel 10 times worse.

This morning the mum completely blanked me and DS said his friend has said he can't come to his house.

AIBU to think that she must think I am scum now or something? The flat is very clean btw and DSs friend was quite happy.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 18/09/2012 22:35

Thanks for that. I knew I was spelling it wrong, I just didn't know how to spell it right Grin

SoleSource · 18/09/2012 22:37

Freddos :)

thepeoplesprincess · 18/09/2012 22:38

Is it a properly nice flat tho? Council flats (in my unfortunately considerable experience) are generally unrenovated Hellholes that most "civilised" people wouldn't let their dogs live in, and it can be a shock to the genteel folk when confronted with the usual ten thousand crimes against chipboard and ever abiding waft of stale piss.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 18/09/2012 22:41

Yellow, right before your post was a first hand account from someone who lived in an area where drugs were openly sold and dogs were running riot. My dc are old enough that when they have friends over they do want to go round the corner to the park, or be out riding on bikes, and I don't want them to see drugs being dealt if they do. Nor do I want them to see groups of men all standing around with beer cans in their hands, or older children talking about what 18 rated film they have just seen.

I know my children wouldn't come to harm visiting a friends house, but I am still allowed to make a choice about where they go.

dementedma · 18/09/2012 22:42

Wow peoplesprincess, what a bitchy thing to say.none of the council flats I have lived in have smelt of stale piss! We even learned how to use the outside privvy and everything!

NellyJob · 18/09/2012 22:42

well that's bollocks, I have lived in two LA places, and they were both lovely and light and spacious, OK one of them had a dodgy boiler and the outside stairs were a bit niffy, but inside they were just fine.

CanIOfferYouAPombear · 18/09/2012 22:44

I totally get you outraged
Not being judgey at all as I have lived in very very rough areas in my time. I have seen some horrible things that I would never want my children to be around.
I'm not talking about nice families in council flats, I'm talking living next door to a brothel, used needles on the streets, people spitting at you and shouting abuse for no reason, fights and police raids going on what feels like every other day.

I would NOT want my child to visit a friend in that area. No way.

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere · 18/09/2012 22:44

I only wish I was MrsDeVere.

cynner · 18/09/2012 22:52

My heart is in my throat for you OP. My four children attend private religious school. Most of their classmates are from v posh families. I do have a Master's Degree and my husband is a paramedic, but our income and housing are not at all in line with most of the school. We live in a one bathroom, crumbling heap of a Victorian on the outskirts of the village. My son always has friends over and they often stay for several days. My oldest daughter almost never invites friends here. She goes to their multi bathroomed, cinema screening room homes.
That is her choice, but I know she is ashamed of our house. I have told her many times, our family resources are limited, and she is very lucky in many ways. I am sorry this happened to you. That mother is a poopy head.
Also, my apologies for the ramble..

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere · 18/09/2012 22:55

Then you are a bit of twat.

And very rude indeed.

:)

thepeoplesprincess · 18/09/2012 22:58

In what way exactly is stating facts rude.....?

WhatABloodyMess · 18/09/2012 22:59

It was actually DS going to the friend's house that is not allowed not him coming to ours again (although we have not asked but that is a taken). Seems the mother has judged not only where we live but him as well.

There is no piss smell. The neighbours are mostly elderly or immigrant families apart from the father and son downstairs who shout 'shut up, you little shit' every time my toddler screams or cries (tantrumming phase). The soundproofing is non existent. There has been a fight in the street over a parking space between 2 women (nice view from up here) and there are police cars around quite often. It is a known area for drugs although the council deny all knowledge of this and I have yet to see anything.

'Outraged' - lucky you for having the choice as to what you children are exposed to. I used to be in your position not too long ago - shit can happen very quickly you know.

Most people that have these strange ideas about council properties have very little experience of them.

Usual, I was thinking that too!

AmberLeaf · 18/09/2012 23:00

Yeah peoplesprincess is talking shite.

Princess you are talking shit

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere · 18/09/2012 23:02

Don't be moronic.
You have not stated facts (putting the word in bold does not make it true)

council housing is NOT generally hell holeish and smelling of piss.
What a load of utter rubbish.

Nicest flat I ever lived in when I was young was ex-LA.

It was in the privately owned rentals that I lived next door to drug dealers and brothels.

OP you sound lovely, try to ignore.

thepeoplesprincess · 18/09/2012 23:03

And it is my experience.

And is therefore a fact.
