Not sure what to do really. Do I mind my own business or report her to her health visitor?
An old collegue of mine is feeding her 9 week old baby with baby jars, cereals and rusks, has been since baby was 6 weeks old. Dad said baby was ready. Can't believe this myself.
WWYD? Confused

What you did in 1990 has no relevance to this thread. People happily smoked and knew no better many years ago too. The woman in question is clearly ignoring all current health advice which rings alarm bells. Why would she risk damaging her baby by weaning at 9 weeks? You have to worry what she might do next. There have been tragic cases of small babies dying due to inappropriate weaning foods (adult breakfast cereals etc).

PropertyNightmare · 13/09/2012 21:48

That was to Madge.

MadgeHarvey · 13/09/2012 21:49

Oh I see now - so if they're weaned later they're guaranteed not to get any allergies later? Who knew! Does that apply to all children everywhere or just some and is there concrete evidence to back it up? Only I don't know any of my son's contemporaries with allergies so forgive my confusion..............

crackcrackcrak · 13/09/2012 21:49

shrug. i'd report her

MadgeHarvey · 13/09/2012 21:50

It has every bloody relevance actually property and your post was stunningly offensive, misguided, unintelligent and strikingly stupid.

captainmummy · 13/09/2012 21:50

Anyone remember watching that program about an american woman who fed her tiny baby with beefburgers? It was a diet prog IIRC

Bigwheel · 13/09/2012 21:51

I would mention it in passing to the hv.

"The woman in question is clearly ignoring all current health advice which rings alarm bells".

or just this specific health advice, and possibly not ALL health advice at all.

madge, that poor baby is in for a hard life because it's mother is thick as well as ignorant. There is a world of difference between using guidelines flexibly, in that one would bring weaning forward by a few weeks if the baby seems ready, and stuffing them with jars of food meant for a much older baby when they are six weeks old.

For anyone who does not understand: six weeks and six months Big Difference.

These guidelines were introduced because of the research based evidence of the long term effects of weaning at different ages on a very large sample of babies.

OP, you are not reporting her to the police or making a citizen's arrest. Have a word with the HV. YANBU.

PropertyNightmare · 13/09/2012 21:55

Oh Madge, you are getting your knickers in a twist......
You are missing the point spectacularly! You did not go against best known medical advice whereas the woman in question is. It is an odd mother who would risk damaging a small baby. Guidelines are not there for fun. They are there to reflect the medical position as currently known.

OliviaLMumsnet · 13/09/2012 21:55

evening all

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 13/09/2012 21:56

how much is your actual food shoping bill Im intrigued now Grin

joona · 13/09/2012 21:57

Jesus christ, i'm sure some of you lot only use MN to bully anyone whose views you dont agree with. Poor OP only asked for some advice, she didnt kill your parents or anything, so why some of you lot feel the need to be so harsh is beyond me! She has'nt committed a crime!

BobblyOrangeGoldGussets · 13/09/2012 21:57

And ditto what PropertyNightmare said.

SirGOLDBoobs · 13/09/2012 21:58

Yes I'd call the HV team. This can really harm a baby, especially this young. Jesus I can't believe some people are so freaking stupid.

JumpingThroughMoreHoops · 13/09/2012 21:58

OMG I smote my breast.

I have been blue blocked by SWMBO Grin

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 13/09/2012 21:58

that was for jumping but as her post has been deleted it now seems a bit of a random question

crackcrackcrak · 13/09/2012 21:58

ha. theres a reason why 'significant harm' has no clear definition. the diet of babies is something ss get involved with quite often.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/09/2012 21:58

The guidelines are based on scientific evidence.

This suggests the mother may be harming her child.

All the anecdotes above are rubbish, same as saying my nan lived to 99and smoked 30 a day for her whole life.

If the mother is ignorant about this she may be unaware of other guideline, smoking, Co sleeping etc.

If she is not ignorant, and is choosing to ignore guidelines then is tantamount to abuse.

Would be good to put her on HVs radar.

Op yanbu

MadgeHarvey · 13/09/2012 21:58

I'll worry about my knickers thanks property although I do appreciate your concern. Anyway - you carry on with your guideline-obsessed hysteria. Meet back here in 20 years and you can tell me how, exactly, this generation of babies is different.

BobblyOrangeGoldGussets · 13/09/2012 21:59

Grin Joona: she didn't kill your parents or anything.

Maybe she killed Old Madge' parents: she is getting quite rattled...

joona · 13/09/2012 22:01

Lol BobblyOrangeGoldGussets yeah i did notice... Jeeeeezzzz!!

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 13/09/2012 22:02

"theres a reason why 'significant harm' has no clear definition. the diet of babies is something ss get involved with quite often"

yes if there are problems with thriving, which Op does not suggest, social services can advice the mother of the guidlines and that is all if there are no signs of this affecting the childs development.
