...to be beside myself with pride over this?

Had to share, I'm prob being very pfb but I have been bowled over by dd today.
After a bout of bullying at school then a period of 3 - 6 months with no 'real' friends, dd (15) has been talking about a girl she's met at school who she's became close with. She's been talking about her CONSTANTLY for about 3 or 4 weeks, she's 'great fun, a good laugh, really friendly, not bitchy like all the other girls etc'. I feel like I know this girl inside out already, and we didn't meet until last night when dd asked if she could come round for pizza, a film and stay the night. I was really looking forward to meeting her. So, to cut to the chase, this girl, who is indeed just lovely showed up about 6pm last night, came in, said hello etc then they disappeared off to the room. I left them to it. This morning they came down in their jammies and to my surprise (and don't ask me why I was surprised) I noticed that my dd's new pal is an amputee, she has no right arm below the elbow. I immediately asked her what had happened and she told me she had been in an accident as a baby. Anyway, they ate, lounged about and then her mum picked her up. I asked dd why she hadn't mentioned it before and she simpy said, 'why would I?' while looking at me with a perplexed look. I honestly don't think I've loved her more. Just thought I would share, AIBU to be bursting with pride about my dd's nonchalance about something I'd imagine lots of teen would be awkward about?

Come on Oscar!

JodieHarsh · 08/09/2012 21:56

Tutti v. interesting post. I think the point is that the OP isn't proud of her child for NOT being abusive. That's not the point at all. She's proud of her for being MORE accepting than most. Because as we all know children are desperately keen to pick up on and mock any difference.

Anyway. Triumphant as my farts are, I know thunder when I hear it

LadyBeagleEyes · 08/09/2012 21:56

Oh, I'm getting nervous now.
Go Oscar!.

JodieHarsh · 08/09/2012 21:57

COME ON OSCAR!!!!!!

thebestisyettocome · 08/09/2012 21:58

Portofino The reality is that a lot of kids will not want to be friends with a child with a hare lip, birth mark or someone who needs a wheelchair. I know a woman who has a disfigured hand. She's in her forties and people who went to school with her still snigger about how her nickname was 'claw'.

MyOrangeDogShitsGoldMoney · 08/09/2012 21:58

  • I'm dead proud of my daughter, I think she did a nice thing.
  • Well yes she did a nice thing but you shouldn't be proud of her.

Only on MN Confused

(As an aside is it just me or Mr Pistorius a hottie?)

Tuttutitlookslikerain · 08/09/2012 21:59

No Jodie, some children are desperately keen to pick up on and mock and difference, not all of them. IME those children who do like to do that are in the minority.

trumpeter · 08/09/2012 21:59

Oh Oscar has no legs, I hadn't noticed because I'm just so accepting. In fact why do these people have their own games at all, I mean what's so different about them? I just can't see it. Hmm

AvonCallingBarksdale · 08/09/2012 22:02

OSCCAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 08/09/2012 22:02

Is Pistorius a hottie?

Is the Pope Catholic?

thebestisyettocome · 08/09/2012 22:02

I think MsCellophane's post says it all to be honest.

JodieHarsh · 08/09/2012 22:03

He is so handsome it's insane. When you think we only ever see him all hot and bothered. It's like, actual film star gorge

Smellslikecatspee · 08/09/2012 22:03

Oh dear lord. . .

I had a huge long post ready in my head and realised that JodieH said it all much better.

Or do we have to flash our disabilities credentials first! . .

trumpeter · 08/09/2012 22:04

He's got a fucking great arse.

LadyBeagleEyes · 08/09/2012 22:04

And no MyDog it's not just you, he is a hottie.

MyOrangeDogShitsGoldMoney · 08/09/2012 22:04

I think I luff him Blush

(disclaimer, I'm terribly hard up and needy)

Proudnscary · 08/09/2012 22:05

He's fit as fuck - I love the 400m, best race of them all

JodieHarsh · 08/09/2012 22:05

Little something for Ariel....

MsCellophane · 08/09/2012 22:06

I'll take that gin!

This has made me cross. My daughter has no local friends, not one, not ever. She has been through primary and secondary and still no friends

The only people she can class as friends are people I know around the country who have a sibling with additional needs. They really don't see her differences and accept her for who she is and they don't understand why others can't see behind the obvious difficulties she has

I'm glad that there are people that can look beyond the obvious and praise should be given to them. I wish the OP's dd was at school with mine - she might not be so lonely

JodieHarsh · 08/09/2012 22:06

Proud is def. the best race. I can't get excited by the 100m. I mean even I can run for 10 seconds, FGS. Not impressed.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 08/09/2012 22:07

Oh my Lord

Thanks jodie.

trumpeter · 08/09/2012 22:07

MsCellophane that was my brother at school. He was constantly ridiculed, this was in the late 70s early 80s and I can't recall many if any friends. It's just heartbreaking.

Excellent X-Post LBE

I'm going to need to go to the top of the list though not the bottom. On accounts of my hard-up-ness and all. Thanks awfully.

And can I just say no one will be doing any licking thank you very much
