Could have been life or death at Jamie's Italian

Just wondered what your thoughts are and if I am being a bit AIBU, though I'm sure I'm not.
Went for lunch today to Jamie's Italian with my friend. It's just opened up in our town and we were keen to give it a go. After our meal we ordered coffees and just as my friend was talking her last gulp she wretched. There was a dead wasp in her mouth which must have been at the bottom of her cup. she spat it out and we complained. The waitress was mortified ( she was v nice), apologised and got the duty manager. He was pleasant enough and offered to knock the cost of the coffee off the bill. I'm quite a meek person but thought WTF? She could have been killed if she had an allergic reaction. He responded that if it had been a hair from a member of the kitchen staff he could have played merry hell with them but this was kind of out of his control - fair point if the wasp had just dropped into the coffee but this was at the bottom of a cappucino so it was obv. already in the cup. I told him we wouldn't pay the full bill so he knocked 50% off and asked us to email to restaurant manager as it was her day off. I'm sure they realize how serious the outcome could have been and are a bit worried. As you can read from my post, I am a bit of a wuss but would really like to email an eloquent yet reasonable complaint. Can anyone give me some tips?

Here's a tip - how was a dead wasp life threatening? It's not very nice but it couldn't sting her. I think you got 50% off the bill and that's surely good enough.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 31/08/2012 18:08

I think they have been entirely reasonable, 50% off bill and profuse apologies. Kind of agree with the Manager re hair/toenail or similar.

JamieandOscarSittinginATree · 31/08/2012 18:09

Oh come off it. Accidents happen.

Caerlaverock · 31/08/2012 18:10

Are you in Scotland?

How do you know it didn't drop into the cup and drown in cappuccino??

Think you're overreacting just a tad.

CrazySexyCool123 · 31/08/2012 18:10

50% is more than reasonable IMO.

ShutTheFrontDoor · 31/08/2012 18:10

You got 50% off the bill and you STILL want to complain?
Why ?

JamieandOscarSittinginATree · 31/08/2012 18:11

If it was in the bottom of the cup and remained there it was probably dead. Therefore not life-threatening. I think.

Bluefrogs · 31/08/2012 18:12

It was accidental I'm sure, you got 50% off your meal,no one actually died.Have you never done anything wrong?
What exactly do you want them to do?
I think their actions are absolutely correct as nothing actually happened.

GnocchiNineDoors · 31/08/2012 18:13

Id like to see how you think a restaurant could have prevented a wasp flying into a coffee. And if the wasp was already dead and in the cup then he hardly posed a risk rist in peace little Waspy

Its not.clear.from your Op, is your friend allergic to wasps?

Convert · 31/08/2012 18:13

How do you know that it was in the cup already? Was your friend actually allergic?

Nancy66 · 31/08/2012 18:14

Maybe it's the latest thing - like a maggot in tequila.

GobblersKnob · 31/08/2012 18:15

Really, really?

YABU.

OnceICaughtAFishAlive · 31/08/2012 18:16

kinda had a simular thing in TGI fridays with some winged insect and a salad.
the manager tried to offer me a free desert as compensation ... my response - I will not be eating anything else that come out of your kitchen.
report them to environmental health.
I did - they investigated and confirmed it had come from bagged salad.
they will investigate and see if there is anything of concern in the kitchens

NameChangeGalore · 31/08/2012 18:17

If it was already dead in the cup, then it wouldn't have had its sting, would it? Because don't wasps die after they sting something? I don't know!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/08/2012 18:17

When a wasp stings, the sting is pushed in and out in a sawing motion, with the barbs catching in the flesh each time the sting goes in - and it is this catching of the barbs that pumps the venom into the victim.

As the wasp was dear, it couldn't do this, so I doubt that the wasp could have harmed your friend, OP - so I think you would be very unreasonable to complain after getting an apology and 50% off the bill.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/08/2012 18:17

Sorry - dead not dear.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 31/08/2012 18:18

Dead wasps can sting though. Ds put his hand on a dead one and it stung/the sting went into him. And he had an allergic reaction.

Not sure how you'd know it was in the cup beforehand as any dead wasp would surely float?

WelshMaenad · 31/08/2012 18:19

You've been more than amply compensated, I'd leave it there to be honest. I've just had sone Sainsburys 'eco' nappies give my child chemical burns and all I got was a refund of the purchase price!

Abra1d · 31/08/2012 18:19

50% off is very fair.

GiserableMitt · 31/08/2012 18:20

No, Name, that's bees. They die once they've stung something but wasps can sting over and over evil little fuckers.

From Once I caught's post, last week we were in a restaurant and both DH's and DD's (different) meal had hairs in them. As the kitchen staff all wore hairnets I struggle to think this was accidental and lean more towards it being a grudge by a now ex member of staff

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 31/08/2012 18:20

welsh Shock

K999 · 31/08/2012 18:20

Oh that old chestnut. You sure your friend didn't put the wasp in her mouth herself, pretend it was in the cup to get a refund? Grin

Naysa · 31/08/2012 18:21

If you wanted to take it further you shouldn't have accepted the 50% off. You haven't really got a leg to stand on seeing as the wasp was in your friend's cup and you accepted the discount.
