Could have been life or death at Jamie's Italian

Just wondered what your thoughts are and if I am being a bit AIBU, though I'm sure I'm not.
Went for lunch today to Jamie's Italian with my friend. It's just opened up in our town and we were keen to give it a go. After our meal we ordered coffees and just as my friend was talking her last gulp she wretched. There was a dead wasp in her mouth which must have been at the bottom of her cup. she spat it out and we complained. The waitress was mortified ( she was v nice), apologised and got the duty manager. He was pleasant enough and offered to knock the cost of the coffee off the bill. I'm quite a meek person but thought WTF? She could have been killed if she had an allergic reaction. He responded that if it had been a hair from a member of the kitchen staff he could have played merry hell with them but this was kind of out of his control - fair point if the wasp had just dropped into the coffee but this was at the bottom of a cappucino so it was obv. already in the cup. I told him we wouldn't pay the full bill so he knocked 50% off and asked us to email to restaurant manager as it was her day off. I'm sure they realize how serious the outcome could have been and are a bit worried. As you can read from my post, I am a bit of a wuss but would really like to email an eloquent yet reasonable complaint. Can anyone give me some tips?

I'm wetting myself at are you in Scotland!

StealthPolarBear · 31/08/2012 18:22

I believe tha dead wasp can sting. Not saying I agree with op, but just saying. Do think him offerin to only tke the coffee offthe bill was a bit pathetic

EmmaBemma · 31/08/2012 18:23

It sounds unfortunate, and not at all pleasant, but their response was proportionate I think. It's not reasonable to expect that someone's attention should be on the freshly made coffee for the entire time between having been made and arriving at your table, in case a sleepy wasp flies into it. How do you know it didn't get in there when it was on the table? If you're suggesting more compensation or something, you're on shaky ground.

CakeBump · 31/08/2012 18:25

hehehe you'd not have got 50% off the bill at our restaurant!!

I'd have offered you the coffees free, and if you'd have complained further maybe given you a voucher.

To take this any further would be Going Too Far imo....

FuckityFuckFuck · 31/08/2012 18:26

YABu for going into Jamie's sodding Italian in the first place.

They payed way over the odds in my town to get the spot they wanted and closed a bookshop in the process. I will never forgive them

SilverSixpence · 31/08/2012 18:27

Think you were being unreasonable to pug for the 50% and should certainly be happy with that. This kind of grasping attitude irritates me.

SilverSixpence · 31/08/2012 18:28

Push not pug

GlaikitFizzog · 31/08/2012 18:28

What's being in scotland got to do with it? We aren't all tight bastards you know!!

Caerlaverock · 31/08/2012 18:29

Scotland thing is a bit of an in joke, but is suspect this is the Edinburgh one

GlaikitFizzog · 31/08/2012 18:32

Ah I see! Didn't realise it had opened yet! I won't be rushing if it is, I have a wasp allergy.

3monkeys3 · 31/08/2012 18:32

I'm pretty sure wasps can sting after they have died. My father has a known, fairly serious allergy and this situation could have been very serious for him - he doesn't need an epi-pen because he doesn't go into anaphylactic shock, but gets a lot of inflammation at the site of the sting so a sting in his mouth would be very bad. The fact of the matter is - they have no idea WHO might happen to drink from that coffee cup and have to consider all possibilities - they should have checked that there was nothing in the cup before making the coffee YANBU. If it had dropped into the cup after the coffee had already been made, surely it would have floated? Although I suppose it could have been obscured by the foam.

Welsh I complained to Sainsbury's as when they did the recent changes to their nappies they started leaking badly. They gave me £15 of nectar points so you have been fobbed off. I emailed them, how did you complain?

stifnstav · 31/08/2012 18:36

Is Sharon involved in this? Were they playing Erasure?

iamnotinterestedinyourkids · 31/08/2012 18:37

i dislike the SALT at ji.

gordyslovesheep · 31/08/2012 18:37

did she make a noise like a T Rex when she found it?

iamnotinterestedinyourkids · 31/08/2012 18:38

lol at wretched typo

ginmakesitallok · 31/08/2012 18:40

Wasps in Scotland?? This year??? The one good thing about all the shite weather we've been having is that there have been no wasps. (Or maybe it was just trying to get warm??)

takeonboard · 31/08/2012 18:41

you got 50%, no one was at fault and no one was harmed, end of story I would have thought.

TheCrackFox · 31/08/2012 18:42

Why are you eating there anyway? Hasn't he got enough money what with his frozen food range, "at home" parties, kitchen ware, garden stuff, tv programmes, cook books, and a defunct advert with Sainsbury's? He us a greedy cunt.

Still, you got half your meal for free.

schmee · 31/08/2012 18:42

The sting of a wasp is still active if it is dead. Lots of people have inflammation at the site of a wasp sting, so if you swallow one it can stop you breathing if your throat swells up. 50% off fine though

RedBlanket · 31/08/2012 18:42

Rubberbullets - fobbed off with 50% off? For a JO meal that's equivalent to about £20.

Groovee · 31/08/2012 18:43

If you wanted to take it further you shouldn't have accepted 50% off the bill.

Pickles77 · 31/08/2012 18:43

The scotland thing isn't offensive it's off
A old thread where one of the comments was are you in Scotland. It was completely irrelevant.
It's like the Sharon and trex thing Smile

LilyCocoplatt · 31/08/2012 18:45

Dead wasps can sting you in the throat if you drink them, I know someone who this happened to when they were drinking out of a can outside and a wasp had gone into it and drowned in the drink, needed hospital treatment but they were alright in the end. However, in this case nobody was actually harmed so I think 50% off the bill by way of apology is fine.

ExitStencilist · 31/08/2012 18:47

it would have floated, not sat stuck to the bottom, so I think this unlikely.
