It was my fault really.. Couldn't help searching DS's name to see what people think.

I know people are entitled to their opinion but jeeez!

Time to wheel this out again to let you know what definitely will happen if you choose certain names.

I love the baby names board, but I often think others are harsh.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 27/08/2012 20:34

That is brilliant Psammead As a mum of a Jayden I think it is hilarious.

Now excuse me while I get my boy his fags and special brew. I have already informed him that he won't ever be a high court judge. He looked bemused and told me he'd never wanted to be one anyway! That's my boy! Onwards and downwards! The gutter beckons, ASBO boy! Grin

Psammead · 27/08/2012 20:37

Grin Glad it amused you. What a load of old tosh some people seem to believe!

Alligatorpie · 27/08/2012 20:42

I once posted in baby names as we were trying to decide on a middle name. I got slated and was repeatedly told I was spelling it wrong, despite me not being British (dh is) and saying it was a common spelling in my country and it is unlikely the baby would live in the UK until they were an adult ( so teachers were not a problem). It was quite ridiculous.
I never went back to baby names. AIBU is far more entertaining.

Alligatorpie · 27/08/2012 20:43

Pressed post too soon, Baby names comments do get mean, so yanbu.

LittleSugaPlum · 27/08/2012 20:46

I went on there to ask about the name im calling my DD due in 7 weeks and not many people liked it.

But i dont care, and she ll still be named it, because i love it!

Her name will be Devon Elizabeth. Many family members dont like it either, but again im not changing it :-)

FWIW i ve never been to Devon, have no special connection with the place, just liked how unusual the name is.

DaPrincessBride · 27/08/2012 20:48

Oh! DD's name is approved - I thought it would be ripped to shreds!

Polkadotfanatic · 27/08/2012 20:54

SP's my friend named her little boy Kailum - he's 9 now. I know that's not the same as your spelling, but I think its pronounced the same :) When I first heard it I misheard it for Callum because I had never heard it before (although I still liked it).

I think the essential thing is that within a few years, the child just is the name and when you use it every day, you don't even think about it :) Thinking a child won't become a certain profession because of a name, is ridiculous and I suspect some people who post on the baby name thread are actually just snobs (although they would deny it).

I say this as a regular user of that board - and there are some genuinely nice people on it too. Saying that...there have been some posts where I have wanted to get involved, when an OP has been given a flaming for daring to suggest a hyphenated name or a name beginning with the much-hated 'K', but I just bite my tongue...

The only rule thing I would say is that think about yourself at the age you are now and imagine introducing yourself as the name you're thinking of choosing and if you would be happy to do it, then the name is fine. :)

Spuddybean · 27/08/2012 20:54

dontmind i have never really thought of the name as bringer of destruction, according to the story i grew up with, she brings regeneration and the spring. However, my name means the prophet of doom and it's never held me back! ;)

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 20:57

polka that's is the exact spelling Shock

That's how I spelt his name and i got bollocked as its meant to be Caelum!

I've never heard of anyone else with the same name Grin

conorsrockers · 27/08/2012 20:59

I also have one that will never be a high court judge - according to an ill informed mnetter whose name escapes me. I liked that thread.
She'd have a fucking field day if she found out the names of the other two.....

RuleBritannia · 27/08/2012 21:00

I know someone called Vienna. I think she was conceieved there. Quite a nice name really though.

RuleBritannia · 27/08/2012 21:01

*conceived

Polkadotfanatic · 27/08/2012 21:02

OMG!! How odd! I am in the Channel Islands! I misread your previous wrong (flicking whilst watching CSI) and thought you had spelt it Caelum. FWIW I prefer Kailum (but that could just be because I'm more used to that one ) :) I can't talk, my first DD is going to be a Poesie - my mum choked on a plum when I mentioned this casually. When I say choked I mean it to, my dad had to do the Heimlich (sp) manouevre on her.... Hmm

WithACherryOnTop · 27/08/2012 21:03

Vienna? You'd have people singing that bloody song to you constantly.

Polkadotfanatic · 27/08/2012 21:05

"FWIW I prefer Kailum (but that could just be because I'm more used to that one " - one should have been spelling Blush - now being distracted by Alan Carr on Channel 4 lol

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 21:05

I said I wasn't going to mention it as I didn't fancy another bollocking Grin

I spelt it like that as i liked it. People don't struggle with pronouncing as much as they did once Kai Rooney appeared. It suits him.

Never thought that spelling was around. I saw Kaylum as the spelling and didnt like the y in it.

ExitStencilist · 27/08/2012 21:07

surely they would struggle more since kai is pronounced ky and you want people to say kay? Confused

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 21:10

That's what I meant. When Kai popped up thats how they were pronouncing it but now no one seems to struggle as much.

Moominsarescary · 27/08/2012 21:13

I like it! And the spelling. Not keen on it with a y though. I wanted it or Caleb for ds3 but dp said no more c names or names thet could be spelt with a c Hmm

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 21:26

I didn't like the 'y' so replaced it.

I like Caleb!

I'm a K and so is my son. K's don't seem to be liked on here though.

Moominsarescary · 27/08/2012 21:29

Nope I'm a k too, although the more common spelling of my name is with a c.

Moominsarescary · 27/08/2012 21:30

I quite like cole and chase too

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 21:32

I like Cole.

Don't know one though. My brother's and sisters have normal names but on here they are either boring or spelt wrong. Can not win Grin

arthurfowlersallotment · 27/08/2012 21:52

I named my DD Saoirse and according to the baby names board that means I am an IRA sympathiser...

:o
