It was my fault really.. Couldn't help searching DS's name to see what people think.

I know people are entitled to their opinion but jeeez!

OP posts:
IawnCont · 27/08/2012 17:17

hobnobs Why diolch... :o

thegreylady · 27/08/2012 17:37

Someone said Benedict sounded like 'bendy dick' so that's not safe either!

valiumredhead · 27/08/2012 17:42

Oh it's shocking! I only ventured over there once and got into a row Shock

HecateHarshPants · 27/08/2012 18:00

Neither of my children's names have ever been mentioned on MN ever, they are that rare/unusual.

I am fairly sure that there are those mners who would sneer and snort at them, but they go beautifully with our forrin surname, so bollocks to 'em Grin

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 18:25

hecate I need to know the names Grin

I'm hiding the spelling of my sons name though some have seen it.

HecateHarshPants · 27/08/2012 18:38

pm'd you.

shhhhhhh Grin

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 18:46

I've replied!

My own name gets enough on here and its a normal one.

Let's say it rhymes with smelly, jelly, belly..

Hullygully · 27/08/2012 18:48

My ds is called Duskie Hugh and it has attracted a great deal of opprobrium

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 27/08/2012 18:49

Both my girls' names have been 'urg, boring, don't like' and 'love love love' on here: I could have guessed that anyway.

I do like it that both appear on threads asking for 'strong' or 'classic' names though!

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 18:50

opprobrium don't even know how to pronounce this never mind know what it means!

Guess its to be expected due to my name Grin

ScrambledSmegs · 27/08/2012 18:56

Jamie thanks, but sadly given fact that the poster concerned actually used the same phrasing that I did (in fact did everything but actually put it in quotes) I'm pretty sure she or he had read my post and was deliberately being rude. Shame really, the comment added absolutely nothing to the thread.

I have no problems with people not liking DD's name though - we don't all have the same taste, it would be a boring world if we did.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 27/08/2012 18:57

Scrambled. Oh well they were a git and have attracted my opprobrium

MarianneM · 27/08/2012 19:01

Liam's fine!

I was going to say at least it isn't Jayden but someone beat me to it Grin

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 27/08/2012 19:03

I love the baby names forum! It makes me laugh how quickly DS1's name comes up as soon as someone says "chav" or "made up name" My poor Jayden has no hope in life, I should tell him to give up now and go and have a fag instead of getting those top marks in his tests.

I take all this with a pinch of salt as not everyone will like my choices, and I won't like theirs. (though I wouldn't say I hated a name, I just wouldn't use it myself)

I also don't understand why people ask a forum full of strangers about what to call their child. When I was pg that was between DH and I, not even our parents got told. My 5 have names I love, they totally suit them, even Jayden!!

ScrambledSmegs · 27/08/2012 19:05

Opprobium would make a great name Grin

scentednappyhag · 27/08/2012 19:07

I've just had a search of DD's name, and comments include 'horrible and unfeminine', 'plain horrid' and 'it's a boys name'.
I still love it Grin

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 19:11

I haven't searched my sons name as I know it won't come up.

I did.search my name though. It is common and chavvy though Grin

Matesnotdates · 27/08/2012 19:15

spsfanjo I want to know your ds name now!! Intrigued how you know it won't come up

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 19:19

mates I have pm'd you.

It won't show up if searched it. I don't think the proper spelling would either Grin

HoratiaWinwood · 27/08/2012 19:32

On the fence.

I asked Baby Names because I wanted to find out what people in general think. Friends don't say these things out loud but they might be thinking it and I want to know. The fact that it is total strangers telling you takes the sting out of the opinion.

My DCs are variously boring, safe, etc. Which is exactly what we were after.

I do wish people would read the OP though, and work out what she actually wants. Is it "I'm desperate not to choose a name that could possibly be considered chavvy - are any of my list chavvy at all?" or "We have narrowed it down to this shortlist but we aren't inspired - any similar suggestions?" or is it actually "Think we've decided on this - please point out any obvious serial killers we've forgotten about, otherwise reassure me that this is luffly"...?

Pickles101 · 27/08/2012 19:57

My baby's name has ranged from "lovely" to "adorable" to "old fashioned and ugly" and "oh God how awful, please use it as a nickname and give it a correct Sunday name."

TBH I don't really care, like someone else said before me, it suits her and I know it's the right name for her, because (despite some poor opinions of it) I still like it Smile

TheSitChewAceChien · 27/08/2012 20:04

I've never dared search DDs name, but once clicked on a thread where it was being held up as "an ultimate in chav name"

I got that horrible butterfly in a bad feeling in my tummy, even though it's just words on a screen.

DS' seems to be ok though.
Poor DD.

TheSitChewAceChien · 27/08/2012 20:07

*butterflies- in a bad way feeling.
Typing faster than my brain could think!

CanoeSlalom · 27/08/2012 20:13

YABU. Where else can people get honest opinions about potential baby names? Anyone you know or meet in real life won't tell you what they really think.

Did you tell people your DC already has the name?

DontmindifIdo · 27/08/2012 20:18

Spuddy - if it helps, it was after reading that thread that I told DH I wanted to put Persephone on our girls name list for when we finally get DC2 (although DH has since looked up the meaning and keeps saying "do you really want to have a little girl who's name means bringer of distruction'?" - I know I'd be in for a lifetime of "well, she does what it says on the tin" when she breaks anything/makes a mess/causes a scene etc - if your family don't know that meaning, don't tell them...)

I think if there's an obvious problem with a name that a parent hasn't thought about like there's a song/book/mass murderer with that name, it's best to point it out to them rather than wait for them to annouce little X and get "oh, like X?" or have the song sung at them and hate it (my name appears in a song, I don't like it but have had said song sung at me/played by DJs at weddings - although banned at my own -and generally followed me about. My mum didn't think of the song when she named me but is annoyed by the reference). If your DC's name is the same as a song or famous book, you have a duty to listen to the song/read the book before confirming the name IMO.

I also think it's worth pointing out to people that they aren't using the most common (I won't say 'right') spelling of a name - I have the slightly more unusual spelling of my name (unusual in UK, but in other European countries my spelling is more common), I have spent a stupid % of my life on the phone to call centres correcting it. (T-mobile have been told more than 5 times yet still send me post with an additional letter in my name.)
