It was my fault really.. Couldn't help searching DS's name to see what people think.

I know people are entitled to their opinion but jeeez!

OP posts:
Spuddybean · 27/08/2012 13:25

But pictish what if you don't ask and just say 'dc is going to be called x can anyone think of a good middle name' How is that asking for people to insult you. I can understand honesty on the what do you think of x?' questions.

VonHerrBurton · 27/08/2012 13:25

For the record Spuddy my ds is called the same name as a dog I had years ago, ironically! We love the name - for man or beast. It's a bit over popular now though but we don't care!

Frothing mad women though, yes you're right, it's unecessary and a bit strange that someone could get irate about a stranger's child's name. How bizarre!

Lighthearted dogs/cats/bacterial infection type comments are funny, what you describe is not.

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 13:25

Pie?! Why are people choosing a nickname.before an actual name?

IawnCont · 27/08/2012 13:27

ROFL @ "Pie". That should be my nickname. I love pies.

I did once make the mistake of searching DS1's name on here, and apparently it's boring and "meh". I was a bit stung, but it's my fault for searching.
BTW, I have never met an Octavia or a Benedict.

Whatmeworry · 27/08/2012 13:27

I saw the Nemesis one.. Heey! Each to their own and all that

I assume that's where he was conceived :o

IawnCont · 27/08/2012 13:29

Spuddy I think I remember your thread. I think as you were on the names board and was happy to post the first name, people thought they'd give you their opinion on both names, and the names together. Sorry you were upset.

Moominsarescary · 27/08/2012 13:30

I opened a baby name thread talking about tge name Mercedes thinking oh dear. Pretty much everyone loved it but where I live youd get Hmm faces and Chav comments.

ds1 has a mn chav name, it is also a name teachers dread apparently

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 27/08/2012 13:31

I want to know lsts and moomins children's names now Grin

Spuddybean · 27/08/2012 13:33

Haha well i learned my lesson iawn i just thought, 'oh i cant think of a nice middle name for x, i know i'll ask if anyone can think of one...' 3 pages of vitriol later and me hormonal and crying having to go off to a driving lesson!

And yes i can cope with dog/chav/posh/bacterial but it got really personal. i'm a sensitive soul really :)

ErikNorseman · 27/08/2012 13:34

YABU because if you go looking for opinions on names you will find them! I wouldn't search ds's name as I wouldn't want to know what other strangers thought about it.
There are three types of names that make me cringe and if I read a baby name thread with any of those types I will say that they make me cringe. They cross the 'class' boundaries so I'm not being a snob!

RevDebeezWoodall · 27/08/2012 13:35

YANBU. You see a few people who are there on almost every thread telling people the names they have chosen are common and will only result in the child getting an ASBO to coincide with their first birthday. They never offer to reveal the amazing, stylish and not common names they picked for their children though.

Especially in OP's case where it's a "We've picked X - what goes with X as a middle name?" thread, it's awful to pull it apart. It's not AIBU after all. It's baby's names!

squoosh · 27/08/2012 13:36

Persephone is very popular, so if you're looking for praise start a thread about that one Wink

Bilbobagginstummy · 27/08/2012 13:36

Interesting - everyone loves my name, must be MN-approved.

They don't like Bilbo, though. It's treated as a joke. Sad

RevDebeezWoodall · 27/08/2012 13:37

Sorry, confused OP LST and Spuddy there. Sorry.

LineRunner · 27/08/2012 13:37

Some of the opinions expressed very ill-mannered, yes. Which I think says all you need to know about those particular posters' opinions.

I do like the threads where the poster asks for people's lists of 'unusual name suggestions'. They're great. Smile

Moominsarescary · 27/08/2012 13:40

Connor - chav and naughty child
Cory - too American
Tommy - not Thomas
Jacob - stupid wolf that can't act Hmm

IawnCont · 27/08/2012 13:40

Ah right spuddy - I didn't stay on the thread long enough to see the horrid bits. Try to forget it. If you think your child would be happy to be called that, do it.
I do give my honest opinion on here about names, but TBH I think the more posh MN names are worse than the chavvy ones. And I know if I put the name of DS2 it would get ripped apart- It's Welsh and most would find it weird. We are Welsh though, and its not weird at all.

Spuddybean · 27/08/2012 13:40

I purposely didn't say it Squoosh because i don't want anymore comments. I was just talking about how upsetting it can be and using my personal experience to illustrate it. I most definitely do not want praise or condemnation or any opinions whatsoever.

Moominsarescary · 27/08/2012 13:42

Anyone want to point me in the right direction for this baby?

squoosh · 27/08/2012 13:42

Oh my comment wasn't aimed at you spuddy, it was a comment on how names like Persephone are v popular on that thread but less so in actual life.

firawla · 27/08/2012 13:42

I searched all mine on the baby names section before too just to see if anyone said anything about them. ds1's name someone said something like ' dh wanted this name - yuk!!!!!!', ds2 name wasnt mentioned at all and was quite a lot of nice comments and people suggesting ds3 name (but in rl people normally tell me that ds1 name is their favourite!)

I wouldn't take it as hurtful. Hurtful is if you tell someone your child name and they say something bad to your face or the child's face, otherwise its just their opinion which they are entitled to. Just say toyourself doesn't matter, whoever said it clearly has no taste

Birdsgottafly · 27/08/2012 13:46

I put the madness over there as the North/South divide, tbh.

Most of the popular names over there would get laughed out of the North West.

The lack of knowledge about how language and names originate is astounding.

The one thing that i am sure of is that the posters are not high court judges, or possibly don't have careers, they don't seem very knowledgable, anyway.

It gets quits racist at times and very middle England.

I read the board for a laugh.

ScrambledSmegs · 27/08/2012 13:56

Oh, totally YANBU. Some is probably a form of trolling too, I think, desperate to get a reaction.

For example, I posted on one thread because the OP wanted opinions on a name, which happened to be my DD's. I confessed this to the OP and told her about people's reactions to DD's name in rl, nicknames etc. The very next post (about 30 mins later, so no chance of x-post) was someone saying how pretentious and try-hard the name was, and various other pointed unpleasant comments.

I didn't respond, as it was a bit pathetic really. No random Internet sprite is going to stop me loving DD's name Smile

Margerykemp · 27/08/2012 13:57

oh go on what's the name?

Empusa · 27/08/2012 13:59

"My son as a MN unapproved name too"

There are MN approved names?!?!

Grin

You can't please everyone, not worth trying!
