to think that naked photos of Beatrice wouldn't be met with the same amusement as those of Harry?

I don't know why this bugs me so much. It's not like I'm that bothered by the royal family, and I don't care about this either - he's not hurting anyone, and it's his business. But if a princess were caught naked at a party I think there would be Olympian slut-shaming, with others tutting sadly, and saying she had low self-esteem or perhaps some sort of mental health problems. A prince, and it's all "boys will be boys!" Nudge nudge, wink wink, isn't he a scamp! Dontcha just love him!

AIBU to think that it's depressing, that even in 2012 we have such a canyon of double standards?

Just googled that hazeyjane and it also bought up a story from 2008 about her visiting a lap dancing club, again no major uproar that I can recall. Ok she was only 18 and there's no photos of her backside knocking around, but it doesn't seem to have been treated as a massive moral failing, even by the daily mail article I found out about it from.

LtEveDallas · 23/08/2012 11:52

As far as I am concerned if he had been pratting around naked in the Mess it wouldn't be an issue. He would have been in a safe environment (relatively speaking ) with people who weren't going to post the pictures on the internet

Yes, yes agree wholeheartedly (hence my embarrasment at my Dorf photos - but I figure what happens in Austria stays in Austria!)

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 23/08/2012 12:05

"Mess Jousting (motorbikes and swords)"

My ex-DH broke his nose playing that, still swore it was great fun though ...

albertswearengen · 23/08/2012 12:06

Outraged I am not but I think he's an idiot . You can't have it both ways- the best seat in the house for the closing of the Olympic games and multiple tickets that most people would've given their eye teeth for and think you can pick up random women in Vegas and get naked in your VIP suite. Of course it was going to end in trouble.
Doesn't he have access to enough private stately home, ski chalets, members clubs, private islands through his contacts where he could do this sort of thing without worrying about photos in the American press.
I do think 28 is old enough to be able to think through the consequences of your actions.

Latara · 23/08/2012 12:10

Novack - Sorry i don't think i explained myself well in my comment last night, i was a bit out of it so to speak... yes i do look at naked pictures of women (in art & in features in women's magazines anyway) & i know it doesn't make a person gay! I do like to look at other women's bodies - mainly to compare with my own & because i like to see women with figures that i can aspire to achieving myself (if i put the work in at the gym etc..)!

I felt angry on behalf of Princess Beatrice when the photos of her looking curvy in a bikini were published & the media was so rude about her size.. it annoyed me cos she was there happily enjoying her holiday with her boyfriend (who clearly loved her as she was); & then she felt pressured to diet due to the sheer nastiness of the press.

As for Harry's getting naked at 28; well it's still young for a single man - also he's in the armed forces... one of my cousins is a squaddie, similar age - his Facebook is full of photos of him & his army mates: half naked; mooning; messing about with girls in clubs; getting pissed; posing with guns; posing with guns half naked... it's normal for soldiers.
Obviously Harry's royal but it was his birthday after all!

Chandon · 23/08/2012 12:25

albert, completely agree

LtEveDallas · 23/08/2012 12:27

Of course you can - one has nothing to do with another.

Yes he probably should have been more discreet, more security conscious, but I doubt he was thinking 'like a Prince', he was a squaddie on his holidays not caring about anything other than having a good time Smile

Has anyone actually thought that perhaos he was trying to get photos like this iut there?
A good way of giving two fingers to the way he is 'meant' to behave, which taking into account the SS uniform incident (idiot), seems to be quite important to him.

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 12:38

Susanne, few people are keeling over wth their feeet in the air at a bit of nudity. You are making that up. People are astunded at his lack of judgement.

diddl · 23/08/2012 12:39

I agree with Albert

But doubtless it´ll be the fault of his protection officers.

God forbid that he might think for himself-what with being a Prince and only 27 at that, bless.

LtEveDallas · 23/08/2012 13:23

Like I said on the other thread - are we sure his protection officers were with him? he's had other holidays without them - maybe this was one of those?

(I don't know - haven't read the reports as I have no wish to see any blokes flaccid willy Grin)

diddl · 23/08/2012 13:28

I haven´t read reports either-just assumedBlush

JoshLyman · 23/08/2012 13:37

He doesn't go anywhere without his royal protection officers. The furthest they go is outside the room.

Mumsyblouse · 23/08/2012 13:48

I think it's prudish in the extreme to care if a 27/28 year old single man with no girlfriend gets naked with a girl in the privacy of his hotel room. He went out and picked up a stranger (although she might have known him for a few days/beforehand, who knows) and had some fun including getting naked. So what? It was in his hotel room, not in public. Thousands of young people do exactly the same on a Sat night.

I hate the idea we are going back to the days of 'only having sex if married or in a long-term relationship'. I don't care if he does this, or indeed if Beatrice does this. I agree she would be villified to a greater extent, though. There's still so much hypocrisy around women having and enjoying casual sex.

I also don't think he needs to 'act his age'. He's 28, I didn't settle down til my early thirties, and if I suddenly became single again, I may well go and have naked fun with someone I'd met in a bar if they would want to see me naked which is highly unlikely

It's like the 1960's and free love never happened.

Olympicnmix · 23/08/2012 13:49

To revert to the OP, Harry latest escapade will look like high jinks and a bit of a loss of judgement under the influence of alcohol but forgivable because he's a lad, in the armed forces, wanting to be a the front line - compared with Beatrice & Eugenie, presented as freeloaders although I have no idea what they actually do??

Mumsyblouse · 23/08/2012 13:50

What I find far far worse, is that other members of the royal family, such as Charles, did far worse things (by my own code of morality, admittedly) like have lots of naked fun with girls for about 20 years, then marry a virgin for political reasons. Now that really is offensive.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/08/2012 14:11

Mumsy it wasn't just a girl in the room with him because someone else took the photos. I really give a damn about who he is having sex with but I do think he took a security risk and given that as a taxpayer I am paying for his security the least he could do is show a bit of common sense.

perfectstorm · 24/08/2012 00:13

"how can you comparE it to KS she was in a relationship and so was the man,
Harry/Henry is free and single"

Because male celebrities who cheat on a singular (known) occasion aren't met with wall-to-wall hatred in that way. They are not slut-shamed. It's a female-reserved phenomenon, that edge of sexually-based contempt. Basically nobody really thinks a man who does that is a whore. A bastard, yes. But not a "trampire".

Not saying I think Harry did anything wrong, really, other than get caught. I'm just saying the backslapping, "well done my son!" reaction from many quarters would not be replicated were this done by a woman in his position.

Morloth · 24/08/2012 00:17

They would by me.

Couldn't care less either way. Sounds like exactly the sort of crazy shit I got up to in my yoof.

Happy days.

You are right though, most people would react differently I think.

Morloth · 24/08/2012 01:29

Didn't Princess Margaret used to get up to this sort of thing?

But obviously without the phone cameras.

NovackNGood · 24/08/2012 01:41

Only if you believe The Bank Job is a true story, but at lest she did it on a private island that has always banned the papparazi. although seemingly one of her friends had a party pieces of hanging a beer tankard off his party piece.

Morloth · 24/08/2012 01:49

What is the bank job?

I have bugger all idea about the British royal family, just had it in my mind that Margaret was a bit of a tearaway and why not after all?

Whatmeworry · 24/08/2012 07:59

I don't know - haven't read the reports as I have no wish to see any blokes flaccid willy

Yes, ive always found the upstanding member more aesthetically pleasing, otherwise it all just looks like a plucked boneless chicken :o

I think the sexism is pretty obvious. Beatrice or Eugenie would be insulted for their physical appearance and slut-shamed by everyone. I also think the British press would be publishing those photos rather than pretending to follow the right to privacy stuff with the palace

I'm still not sure about slut shamed by everyone, and it seems that the British Press's "sexist treatment" of Harry's privacy lasted about 24 hours - I think it had more to do with Fear of Levinson than Sexism.
