to think that naked photos of Beatrice wouldn't be met with the same amusement as those of Harry?

I don't know why this bugs me so much. It's not like I'm that bothered by the royal family, and I don't care about this either - he's not hurting anyone, and it's his business. But if a princess were caught naked at a party I think there would be Olympian slut-shaming, with others tutting sadly, and saying she had low self-esteem or perhaps some sort of mental health problems. A prince, and it's all "boys will be boys!" Nudge nudge, wink wink, isn't he a scamp! Dontcha just love him!

AIBU to think that it's depressing, that even in 2012 we have such a canyon of double standards?

"I think the conversation about her behaviour would be the mixed bag it is at the moment for Harry, a pretty even split of those who just think it's a bit of fun and those thinking a grown up doesn't behave like that.

I just can't bring myself to get outraged by imagined inequalities based on fantasy tbh."

And tbh if you think a woman would get this reaction, rather than outrage/concern, then I'm afraid I think that is the fantasy.

perfectstorm that's my point though, this thread including my post is full of 'thinks', i genuinely can't think of a public example to compare the difference between treatment of men and women in this situation that doesn't involve infidelity which clouds the issue slightly considering the other emotions that would incite in people.

I could give out plenty of anacdoteal examples from my own social circle but that doesn't count really does it?

It's down to expectation I suppose, my personal experiences mean that my expectation of judgement is different to yours, but without a direct and public example both of our opinions are pure speculation. 50/50 could go either way...

LtEveDallas · 23/08/2012 09:55

Also, how is anyone under his command going to have any respect for him? He has been very vocal about wanting to go to Afghanistan. Well, maybe if he acted like a responsible person, they'd let him

No-one under his Command will care - in fact they will probably admire him more Smile

For everyone saying he needs to grow up, you're forgetting that he has a highly demanding and responsible military job and so when he lets off steam it goes further than you or I letting off steam. Quite common amongst the military I would imagine

Work hard play harder. Very common, and the Cavalry have a worse reputation that most tries to forget the photos of LtEveDallas on the wall of The Dorf wearing not much more than a grin

Mind you, no-one would raise an eyebrow if Harry was a Marine - Naked Bar is standard Smile

I agree that Bea or Zara would get a much harder time though - and that sucks.

threesocksmorgan · 23/08/2012 09:57

how can you comparE it to KS she was in a relationship and so was the man,
Harry/Henry is free and single

Margerykemp · 23/08/2012 10:05

I agree op. Bea wore the wrong HAT ffs and got slagged off everywhere. Harry is totally wreck less and gets loved. Pure sexism IMO.

diddl · 23/08/2012 10:16

I also agree with the OP.

Also-only a few days Harry represented the Queen at the Olympics closing ceremony-and we´re still supposed to respect him if he is chosen to do that again??!!

FrankelSaysRelax · 23/08/2012 10:22

LtEve I was about to post exactly the same. Getting naked is pretty standard practice in the Military, so I can't see this having much effect on his Army career.

[recalls BiL talking about having to run round 42 Commando barracks stark naked after returning from Afghan]

DH (RAF) used to work with 3 guys who were known as "The Naked 3" for their penchant for stripping off the Mess bar Grin

limitedperiodonly · 23/08/2012 10:24

Thirty years ago Prince Andrew used to behave like this and was in a very similar 'job' and people loved him.

These days they think he's a boorish, lazy freeloader who's lost his looks.

If I ever think of Harry it's with mild affection. But his dad should point out the example of his uncle and then let him decide whether that's the future he wants.

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 10:27

is he not going out with Chelsea something??

Iamsparklyknickers · 23/08/2012 10:39

Actually I think I may have an indirect comparison, Princess Margaret was very similar to Harry bar having a position within the armed forces, admittedly I'm not old enough to have experienced the view on her at the time, but it's my impression that she's certainly not remembered as having low self esteem or mental health problems from today's point of view.

Another 'spare' known very much for her partying/indescresions,

almapudden · 23/08/2012 10:52

I'm 27, just to put my point of view into perspective:

I don't understand why people are getting so worked up over the fact that he's naked. To me, that bespeaks a terribly old-fashioned and prudish mentality; the idea that taking your clothes off, even in private, is something vaguely scandalous and shameful.

I'm a teacher and I would be very careful not to let similar photos of myself get into the public domain, not because I would be personally embarrassed but because I understand that other people (my headmaster and the parents of the children I teach) would probably be shocked. But that's about them, not about me.

I think the conversation we need to be having here is not about the morality/lack of sense that Harry displayed, but why so many people are still so uncomfortable with nudity and (gasp) a public hint of sexuality that this has become a big deal.

WillNeverGetALicence · 23/08/2012 10:55

Yes diddl and we're also supposed to believe that he deserves a break, to let his hair down, after his onerous duties at the Olympic Closing Ceremony.

They actually said this on tv last night, I think it was Newsnight?

Yep, so he had premier tickets to the Closing Ceremony and was sat there watching, representing the Queen. Poor diddums, yes he must have needed a break after hard work like that.

[although admittedly some aspects of the Closing Ceremony did seem like hard work to watch... Grin]

WillNeverGetALicence · 23/08/2012 11:00

alma it's not the nudity that's the problem.

If this is his private life it should remain private, I really don't need to know about it.

But he must have realised that he was opening himself up to opportunists with a camera. And that nude photos of him would be broadcast all around the world.

Now, i don't know about you, but if there was any risk that my private sexual behaviour could be made public I would be very very careful.

I would not want my professional standing or career jeopardised by my private life in any way.

I personally would not be happy to have naked photos of myself published on social media and so i would not do what he has done, nor would i have done this at age 28.

diddl · 23/08/2012 11:00

Oh PH being naked doesn´t bother me.

It´s the puerile reason behind it-strip billiards??!!

Of course the person taking pics is also to blame.

But PH showed very bad judgement imo.

I think he´s old enough now to think about his "position" & appropriate behaviour.

Or, give up the royal duties & the privilege.

All of those taking about the military, though-was he with his work colleagues?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/08/2012 11:08

Its the lack of judgment rather than anything else that bothers me. I was watching SkyNews last night and one commentator questioned Harry's wisdom in allowing strangers into his hotel room given that he is a fairly high profile target (3rd in line the the British throne, known to have served in Afghanistan). OK in this case they were armed only with a camera phone but was it wise.

He is not an 18 yr old, he is 28 and should be taking a little bit of responsibility for his own safety now.

almapudden · 23/08/2012 11:20

But this is the thing, why is it puerile to get drunk and take your clothes off in your own hotel room, where you can reasonably expect not to be observed by the public?

As others have said, if he'd streaked through the Olympics closing ceremony then that would be different, but he didn't. So I think that those people who are saying, "Oh, he should be aware of his position," are on the wrong track: he clearly is aware of his position, hence why he saved the nudity for his hotel room, not the communal pool.

diddl · 23/08/2012 11:25

Well imo it´s a puerile thing to do-strip billiards.

I´m sure many disagree.

But it´s more the inviting of strangers to his room & laying himself bare open to what happened-photos taken & sold to the media.

WillNeverGetALicence · 23/08/2012 11:25

But he also invited a number of previously unknown members of the public to join him in his hotel room!

So he could reasonably assume he was being observed by the public!

LtEveDallas · 23/08/2012 11:29

It´s the puerile reason behind it-strip billiards??!!

Hmmm, with only a little thought I can offer up:

Strip Polo
Thunderflash Cricket (Thunderflashes are explosives - like really powerful firworks)
Flaming Arseholes
Extreme Mess Mountaineering
Naked Rugby
Mess Gymnastics
Mess Jousting (motorbikes and swords)
Suitcasing
Tequila Suicide
Snow bombing
Zoom

All of which I have seen or been involved with. Most of which are dangerous, most of which involve alcohol and lots of which involve nudity.

Yes I am an idiot, yes I suppose it is purile. But my God I had some fun! Smile

Iamsparklyknickers · 23/08/2012 11:32

we played office volleyball over the soundboards the other day and we're women ranging from 30-56, it was awesome. Very unprofessional though.

diddl · 23/08/2012 11:33

As I said-I´m sure many disagree.

TiggyD · 23/08/2012 11:38

Firstly, "Strip Billiards"?! Billiards is the game you need 3 balls for. It's the crap uncle or snooker and pool.

Secondly, he must have lost a lot to end up naked.

Thirdly, you don't get to see his winkie! I want proper naked shots!

Forthly, it is taking both hands to hide it! Grin

hazeyjane · 23/08/2012 11:39

Sorry haven't read the whole thread (I know,i know..)

It was plastered all over the press when Princess Eugenie streaked in the grounds of her school. I don't remember much condemnation about it.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/08/2012 11:45

LtEve
Sounds like fun!

As far as I am concerned if he had been pratting around naked in the Mess it wouldn't be an issue. He would have been in a safe environment (relatively speaking Wink) with people who weren't going to post the pictures on the internet.

That's why its his lack of concern for his own safety rather than the fact he was mucking around without his clothes on that bothers me.

SusanneLinder · 23/08/2012 11:46

I think he is going to get it in the neck from Granny :o. 28 is till young IMO, and maybe he should have thought of the consequences a bit more, but I really think its a huge kerfuffle over nothing. It's only a bit of nekkidness, and can't believe that everyone is keeling over with their feet in the air over it.

Jeez , Royals in the past did MUCH worse.
