to think that naked photos of Beatrice wouldn't be met with the same amusement as those of Harry?

I don't know why this bugs me so much. It's not like I'm that bothered by the royal family, and I don't care about this either - he's not hurting anyone, and it's his business. But if a princess were caught naked at a party I think there would be Olympian slut-shaming, with others tutting sadly, and saying she had low self-esteem or perhaps some sort of mental health problems. A prince, and it's all "boys will be boys!" Nudge nudge, wink wink, isn't he a scamp! Dontcha just love him!

AIBU to think that it's depressing, that even in 2012 we have such a canyon of double standards?

Also, how is anyone under his command going to have any respect for him? He has been very vocal about wanting to go to Afghanistan. Well, maybe if he acted like a responsible person, they'd let him.

Yes, yes, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Unless you're a Prince and it gets plastered all over the internet.

I'm also wondering if his incredible stoic façade at the Closing Ceremonies was covering a huge hangover.

Whatmeworry · 23/08/2012 08:04

But by his age most men have grown up, taken on responsibility and consider how their actions affect their family and their reputation

He's 28, not 48 FGS!

Chictactoe · 23/08/2012 08:06

After all the things I have read on MN and still there are people throwing stones. Just because your glass house doesnt have windows as big as his, doesnt make it ok at all. That is why pictures like that sell - so all the judgy pants folk can sit and tut and then claim they dont like the Daily Mail gossip, bull. FGS shit happens.

BlingLoving · 23/08/2012 08:08

will part of me agrees with you. But I nearly crashed the car laughing when I heard someone on the radio suggesting that all this protection officers should be asking for people's cell phones when they came into the suite. Yeah, I can see that going down well... Headlines would be all about strong arm tactics of bodyguards. And not even in the UK but in America!!

Look, if he wants to get drink and naked he should stick to doing it with people he knows and trusts, that's the sensible thing to do. But, at 28 not everyone does the sensible thing.

We can all slag off the royal family but they have a lot going on, are under the microscope constantly and frankly I just can't bring myself to blame any of the younger members when things get a little out of hand. In pre Internet/obsessive media days they could at least retreat for occasional privacy and/or craziness but that's not possible now. And I know that age 28 and single I would have been pretty resistant to any suggestions I should stay 100% with the friends I already had.

Chictactoe · 23/08/2012 08:09

And I agree with Whatmeworry, he is 28. Is there an age limit as to when you have to have a stiff upper lip and not engage in a bit of fun? Embrace your inner child people! The world would be a better place. People dont because of the tuts and "grow up"'s they would get.

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 08:09

really whatmeworry? so is 28 still a child? AFAIK he's been a "grown up" for a decade. At 28 DH and I were in responsible jobs, with a child. I bet most on MN are similar. Few people stretch their adolescence to into their 30s

SamuelWestsMistress · 23/08/2012 08:10

If you can't be naked in YOUR OWN HOTEL ROOM then where can you be naked?

He's a young bloke, he was naked in his hotel room with a girl. He wasn't fucking a chicken, he wasn't shoving cocaine up his arse, he wasn't playing a game of snooker with his knob while wearing a mask of Quern Victoria.

He was in his own private room having a laugh with some other people. There are bigger issues in the world than this, really there are!

That aside OP, YANBU because women are always treated unfairly in the media and any "high jinks" are always portrayed as sluttiness

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 08:10

So at what age do you have to grow up and start acting responsibly?Because I'm only 32 - if I can go a bit crazy and not have people thiking I'm being irresponsible please do let me know,

WillNeverGetALicence · 23/08/2012 08:11

Wrong Chicatoe.

i personally don't get any great pleasure out of photos like these, I am not one of the crowd going phwoar, I would do him!, blah blah Hmm

And yes he's 28! Not 48, no, but also not 18 anymore.

Grow the hell up "man[?]"!

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 08:12

ah I didnt realise it was only 1 girl - I was under the impression it was drinking./sex games with a number of naked women. Still if that's the case then they wonmt have a problem deciding which one of them brought in the camera phone Confused. Off with er head!
That said, at least he was naked too instead of sitting there, dignity intact while they revealed themselves for his pleasre.

MrsKeithRichards · 23/08/2012 08:19

I'm 29 and prone to acting like a dick at times.

renlo · 23/08/2012 08:20

28 is high time to have some common sense. He needs to grow up, he's not a boy. This whole man child thing makes my teeth itch and I agree with the OP if it had web Beatrice or any other female royal the press coverage would be a lot nastier. Truth be told, I don't really care but the royal family are in positions of great wealth and with that comes responsibility, whether they like it or not. Bollocks to it just being a bit of fun- to me it shows a serious lack of judgement. Yes do whatever you like within the law but do goodness sake have sense and don't get caught. With all their money and high education, didn't anyone bother to teach him that?

porcamiseria · 23/08/2012 08:20

uhu

same is the kristen /twilight girl

men do it, its OK

women strip/cheat...outrage!

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 08:22

Oh OK if I'm wrong. But I see 28 as grown up, and I hope my children will too.

diddl · 23/08/2012 08:23

Well if it was him & just one girl-who was taking the pics?

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 08:25

In fairness I don't really have a problem with him being naked in a hotel room with a woman or women (Samuel, the news certainly seemed to imply it was more than one). But he has shown a lack of common sense and judgement IMO, and it' helped by people arguing that almot 30 is still young.

FairPhyllis · 23/08/2012 08:27

OP, YANBU. I think if this had happened to Beatrice or Eugenie then there would have been the biggest slut-shaming fest of all time. If you look at the way they were treated over their outfits at the royal wedding it is clear that they have become a bit of a punching bag in a way none of the other grandchildren have, possibly because the unpopularity of their parents has rubbed off on them. But having said that I think even Zara, who is much more popular, would have been shredded. If I were Kate I would be praying for sons, because they are likely to have a much easier time of being in the public eye than daughters.

Harry is entitled to a private life, but he should be old enough to know that inviting total strangers back to your hotel room and getting naked with them is a risky enterprise in the age of the cameraphone if you are a royal prince. He knows that people will always be out to exploit him. He owes it to his family not to embarrass them by openly coming across as rather sleazy and undignified.

WillNeverGetALicence · 23/08/2012 08:39

It seems he lacks judgement and common sense.

I personally would be a bit concerned if I had to fly with him in Afghanistan.

JoshLyman · 23/08/2012 08:45

For everyone saying he needs to grow up, you're forgetting that he has a highly demanding and responsible military job and so when he lets off steam it goes further than you or I letting off steam. Quite common amongst the military I would imagine.

And he gets no more leave than any other soldier.

Chandon · 23/08/2012 08:47

hey OP, I was thinking this this morning!

Whatmeworry · 23/08/2012 08:50

Seems a number of people on have either forgotten their 20s, envy those now in them, or never had them.

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 08:53

I'm 32! My 20s were a few months ago. And yes, I possibly did silly things in my early 20s but never with these potential repercussions, and I grew up!

perfectstorm · 23/08/2012 09:01

"He's a young bloke, he was naked in his hotel room with a girl. He wasn't fucking a chicken, he wasn't shoving cocaine up his arse, he wasn't playing a game of snooker with his knob while wearing a mask of Quern Victoria."

Oh God. Those are mental images I could have done without. Grin

I don't care about this, really. So he played strip... billiards? (Seriously?) But the person who mentioned Kristen Stewart, yes that was what I was thinking about. The media/public are still brutal to women about any sexually-tinged indiscretions.

OP posts:
WillNeverGetALicence · 23/08/2012 09:03

It seems that people who think he's in his 20s he should be able to have a laugh like any one of us have forgotten who he is!

He is a Royal Prince. I will say it again, with great privilege also comes great responsibility.

So he will never have to worry about how to pay his bills, have tv licence threatening letters pop through his door, have to wait 6 months for a table at the Fat Duck, fly long haul cattle class like the rest of us plebs.

However the plebs like us do not have to worry that our free living youth will be captured on film and broadcast to the world in a matter of minutes. It allows us some freedoms which are impossible for a royal or a celebrity.

Imo at 28 and as a highly and expensively educated young man Prince Harry should be by now well aware of this fact.

So to do what he did indicates to me that he just does not really care how he is perceived. And i believe this is wrong for a senior member of the royal family.

And all of you saying he is 28, he is young, leave him alone are part of the culture enabling his spoilt brat behaviour.

And no, it shouldn't be somehow more acceptable because he is a male and "sowing his wild oats" as they used to say. But I think if one of the princesses did this it would be a cause of great concern and condemnation, not just a bit of a laugh.

Iamsparklyknickers · 23/08/2012 09:11

It's all very hypothetical though isn't it? I'm really struggling to think of a comparison involving other men and women that have had the same kind of scrutiny in a situation that didn't involve betraying a long term relationship?

I'm not so certain Beatrice would be villified in the way posters are getting hypothetically outraged about in exactly the same circumstances. I think she would be definitely facing horrible comments about her body, but then so is Harry, there's plenty of comments out on the Internet about the size of his penis and his arse, the nastier ones I've seen suggesting that his hands don't appear to be cupping much etc.

I think the conversation about her behaviour would be the mixed bag it is at the moment for Harry, a pretty even split of those who just think it's a bit of fun and those thinking a grown up doesn't behave like that.

I just can't bring myself to get outraged by imagined inequalities based on fantasy tbh.
