So I sorted out the family wardrobes and placed the items in various carefully selected charity bags and placed them outside the front of the house. On coming back into the lounge there is a women stood in my front garden pilfering items from the bags (mainly baby clothes and bits). Anyway I go out and ask her what she on earth she thinks she is up to and to return said items as what she was doing was theft and trespass. She reluctantly handed the items back and I said I was more than happy for her to purchase the items and then money go to the charities in question.

She asked how much an item and I said 20p for the vests, 30p for the babygrows (there were some still with the labels on) and a £1 for everything else (about 60% had the labels on and cost a lot more than a £1). She walked off muttering.

WIU to refuse to let her take the items for free as they were things we no longer wanted. I felt that it was paramount to theft from the charities we had chosen not to mention from us.

the fact is nobody even knows if she really did need them!! She might have been wanting them too sell on ebay?! Personally i think she can go to the charity shop and buy the items if she wanted. I do not think the OP was unreasonable with wanting the clothes for a particular charity.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 22/08/2012 15:07

I'm moving a week sat. Yummy. Ds is 18 months and I am 14 weeks pg so have to keep all the baby paraphenalia!

We are letting out our non baby friendly flat and renting a house, as we haven't had a good enough offer to buy a new house.

Looking forward to having a garden!

Yummymummyyobe1 · 22/08/2012 15:08

maddening lol at the thought of means tested crime. Smile

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons hide and seek is something that teenagers are good at or so I'm led to believe.

IvanaNap it is my 4 month old's stuff. I didn't know that about tags and store credit (in theory then when I get something new with store credit I'm not really shopping) this lot can go to charity and I will return anything unworn next time.

I had to Smile at the thought of a three legged mouse

i am fine, trying not to go mad as my dp is away for 8 days so am on my own with the 5madthings! its all fun Grin glad you are feeling better :)

i do think it was very cheeky, she could have asked, and in that case i wouldnt mind someone having stuff, but if i put stuff out for charity i dont expect people to rummage around in it and take stuff, it is bloody rude!

Yummymummyyobe1 · 22/08/2012 15:12

Thank you Wowserz129

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot you have your hands full at the moment then, we are having to keep out baby bits as my sister is due in December and then it will come back here for baby no 2 (according to my mum). I hate waiting for a good offer on property as it means you can only look at houses you want and often fall in love with.

OP posts:
5madthings · 22/08/2012 15:12

you do have to be careful with charity shop bags, some are reputable ones and others if you read the small print are ones that sell stuff on often by weight of the clothes andt hen only donate a percentage of that to charity! i only give to authentic ones!

Ismeyes · 22/08/2012 15:12

Won't someone think of the three legged mice? They can make nests out of john Lewis babygros you know!

SugarBatty · 22/08/2012 15:14

I may be wrong here but I never quite believe you in your posts op! They always seem to include some type of braggibg about things you have bought or about how your better off than others.

I'd have let the lady have the clothes, you were getting rid anyway and the stuff she didn't want would have still gone to charity.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 22/08/2012 15:15

5madthings remember there is always Mr Green and Mr Black and also Mr Pinot and Mr Gris for mummy only time. Wink

I would have gladly let her go through the bags if she had knocked and asked

OP posts:
IvanaNap · 22/08/2012 15:17

Tbf its no offence to mice refuges... rather that they are clearly made up charities with just something generic about animals or children on (rather than a recognised establishment like Marie Curie, Heart Foundation etc) so we turn the bags inside out and use them to give to a shop in town.

Returning things, easy peasy DH does it better, he gets less questions just a "I am returning this but have misplaced my receipt" and a "it wasn't suitable / doesn't fit" if they ask for a reason.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 22/08/2012 15:19

The point is though they were for charity. Not a free for all in the garden!

On that token it should be ok to shoplift from charity shops then.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 22/08/2012 15:19

5madthing we do the same as I would much rather the charity get as much as they can (hence the gift aid)

Ismeyes perhaps I could make a three legged mice hospital with the toy boxes.

SugarBatty that is your prerogative and I do understand where you are coming from. How do you know that the items she didn't want would have gone to charity and not simply been bundled up a sold.

OP posts:
theodorakis · 22/08/2012 15:30

I wouldn't begrudge giving anything I had to anyone who needs it but I would be suspicious that she would just put them on Ebay.

Justme23 · 22/08/2012 15:45

So by some of the mumsnet posters standards the looters in last years riots were justified... Have you told the courts yet? They NEED to know!

MainlyMaynie · 22/08/2012 15:59

Didn't you think your sister might want those unworn £35 rompers for the baby she's expecting?

Tittywhistles · 22/08/2012 16:06

Wow, in the charity shops here, even George at Asda or Next babygros cost £1+.

Emilie et Rose would never even get as far as the charity shops IME.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 22/08/2012 16:25

theodorakis that was my thinking.

Justme23 I think some people have a very different moral compass that is for sure.

MainlyMaynie I had already asked her and she refused as they are not to her taste. I have said that I will give her what they were worth new (about £1030) on top of her actual gifts.

Tittywhistles I wanted to help her and make a bit of money for the charities selected. I'm pleased to say we often have items like Emile et Rose in the charity shops around here for about £5.

OP posts:
ObiWan · 22/08/2012 16:28

'about £1030' Grin

God love you OP, subtlety is not your forte.

GragPop · 22/08/2012 16:28

£1000+ on baby clothes? :o

Yummymummyyobe1 · 22/08/2012 16:33

ObiWan I do try

*GragPop they are very beautiful in my defense.

OP posts:
crikeybill · 22/08/2012 16:38

I think I've spent about 300 quid in total on clothes for my 13 month old ds. Perhaps I should come and rummage in your bins !!!!!
£1030!!!!!!

Justme23 · 22/08/2012 16:40

If OP is anything like me then leaving Next children's sections without spending £100 or (blushes) usually more is a huge achievement. And that's just for the one under 5 :).

BUT ASDA George is also great for nursery clothes.

ObiWan · 22/08/2012 16:44

To be fair, if I had thousands of pounds to spare, and only one child, I might have gome a bit mad in high-end clothes shops (I know better now).

There are some very lovely things out there for people for whom money really is no object. People do actually spend £400+ on a little girls summer dress.

Dropping price tags and labels into the conversation is a bit yuck though.

Bartusmaeus · 22/08/2012 16:45

I don't think YABU. I hate seeing people fishing clothes out of charity recycling bins. Here they've started putting in different models which make it impossible to get at the clothes (e.g. with clothes hangers). It's Sad they have to do that.

Having read quite a few of your threads I am curious though why you feel the need to mention how much money you have/have spent on your DS. (your last comment on the 1000 pounds was totally superfluous)

PeazlyPops · 22/08/2012 16:47

OP I dont understand why you think spending money on baby clothes is something to brag about?

Oh and John Lewis baby grows are cheapy cheapies.
