nowadays seem to believe that all hair on their bodies must be waxed off entirely.

I know some people say they prefer it but IME young girls ALL seem to think it's normal to be totally hair free. WHY??

AIBU to think this is terribly sad that they are put under this pressure to wax it all off all the time.

I worry more about how bothered the OP is about this. It's just hair. Just like some men have beards, some don't. I am not going to tell you how 'groomed' I am down there because its nobody else's business apart from mine and maybe my OH. Nor do I know or care whether my friends have pubic hair. I'm 20 btw.

Sorry for ranting I just see this topic a lot on MN but strangely I have never ever discussed or heard it discussed in RL.

Why are people bothered what other adults do with their pubic hair? I don't understand it

You don't mind it
Some people want to neaten it up a bit (bit like brushing/ trimming your hair)
Some people want it all off

Why do people think everyone should be the same? Not everything has to be an 'issue'

fartattack · 18/08/2012 14:33

Eva's mum

I think you are missing my point. I am bothered simply by the peer pressure for young girls to conform to an unnatural state not the actual hair removal or not. Young boys are increasingly seeing baldness as natural and pubes as 'yukky' and unnatural.

Women have always competed in the fashion of the day though. We used to squeeze ourselves into corsets or paint our faces with lead, bind our feet or go in for ritual scarification.

In a hundred years or so people will be looking back at 7 inch stiletto heels that women can barely walk in and the removal of every inch of body hair in the same way, but there is no point worrying about it being a brand new thing.

Thousands of years ago there were probably women around the campfire saying "They paint themselves with woad younger every year. And that bearskin is practically indecent! It wasn't like that in my day, it's like they feel pressured into it"

fartattack · 18/08/2012 14:35

Kayano

That's exactly my point people should be able to have their fanjos as hairy as they like or bald as they like but they can't because there is increasing trend towards no hair. I am not referring to grown adults either I am referring to young girls late teens who are very conscious about their bodies and are likely to feel huge pressure to conform.

I remember being told that the Victorian John Ruskin was so horrified by his wife's pubic hair on her wedding night that he never consummated the marriage. Here It was thought that this was because he had known the female form only through Greek statues and paintings of the nude lacking pubic hair.

QuangleWangleQuee · 18/08/2012 14:40

It also says "There is evidence of pubic hair removal in ancient India dating back to 4000 to 3000 BC. In ancient Egypt women waxed with a sticky emulsion made of oil and honey, and in Greece it was done with resin or pitch."

squeakytoy · 18/08/2012 14:40

I am 43 and have been hair free since I was in my 20's. It is my personal choice, and because I feel more comfortable that way.

Kayano · 18/08/2012 14:41

How many people are following this trend though? Have you surveyed people to ask what their fanoires are like?

Trends pass and are often ignored by huge amount of people.

QuangleWangleQuee · 18/08/2012 14:42

No one bats an eyelid about the fact that we all feel pressure to conform to having hairless armpits thought I suppose. I don't know many people who don't conform to this.

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 18/08/2012 14:44

Oh god I am screwed. Hairy top to toe. Keeps me warm. Like a Bear

Grin
Evasmum12 · 18/08/2012 14:46

Unnatural state? What else do you consider unnatural? Shaving legs/armpits? Hair dye? A haircut?

How 'young' do you mean? Because your comment "No-one will pin them down and veet them but a first boyfriend might say something derogatory simply because it is not the norm" implies they are in a sexual relationship and therefore hopefully above the age of consent, 16, and should be old enough to decide what they want to do to their own bodies. If you are talking about 12 year olds I would be more concerned that any 'boyfriend' had seen their pubic hair or lack thereof.

Anyway, I have never encountered any peer pressure or whatever you believe to be happening among girls/women.

Pickles77 · 18/08/2012 14:46

So am I BU to worry what hairy state my fanjo is in when I go into labour?

QuangleWangleQuee · 18/08/2012 14:49

Pickles. You could shave the bikini line and give yourself a quick Quim Trim . Grin

Kayano · 18/08/2012 14:49

Pickles I did too Grin

Blind shave and a DH to help although he thinks it was stupid lol

It's nothing to do with him! I don't like the implication that people who do it must be doing it to please men.

AGilchrist · 18/08/2012 14:50

1000 years ago Romans thought Egyptian women were whore because they wore make up and dressed different.
egytians wore wigs, waxed etc not just the women.
Personally I fell I sweat more with hairy armpits, my legs get itchy when I don't shave them.
Not all young girls conform to this. Its a trend it will pass.

Evasmum12 · 18/08/2012 14:51

Just seen your later post. 'Late teens' is not the same as young girls. They are adult women who can legally drive, get married, have children, and shave any part of their body that they wish. I wouldn't waste any more time or energy worrying about this non-issue.

Pickles77 · 18/08/2012 14:51

I can't see it to do it- that's my new excuse Grin
Hope the MW doesn't think bad of me!

I find everything girls and women feel te need to do to their faces and bodies sad. Makes up, tans, hair removal, nails, hair, fashion, even cosmetic surgery. I think we live in a very shallow society when if a women merely keeps herself clean she is seen as 'not making an effort', or 'letting herself go', or worse DEPRESSED!

fartattack · 18/08/2012 14:56

Evasmum

I am have heard this so many times but having to take a razor/cream or get on all fours in front of a waxer at such a young age is my point. There is one thing trimming or shaving under an arm but quite another trying to rid yourself of hair at a young age in such an intimate area.

It's my opinion and I stand by the fact I find it sad that so many young girls feel the pressure to conform. In some areas and within some groups it seems it's the norm and that a young person could be ridiculed for not doing it makes me sad.
