You probably don't need a Freedom Bus Pass.
Prat!

Sorry, but getting on the bus, claiming you've forgotten your Freedom Pass and then trying to pay a £2.50 bus fare with a freshly printed twenty pound note peeled ostentatioulsly from the thickest roll of the things I have ever seen and then having an argument with the driver about not having anything smaller does not garner any sympathy.

He did not appear to be disabled, was not in obvious pain, and actually ran for the bus.
I do understand the concept of concealed disablities, but really!

what's a Freedom pass?

LurkeyLurkerson · 09/08/2012 15:14

I'm sorry, I don't know what a Freedom bus pass is.

But I'm pretty sure rich people can be disabled too...

JustFabulous · 09/08/2012 15:14

What has your last paragraph got to do with the rest of the post? Is a freedom pass for disabled people?

Don't you get it when you reach a certain age, regardless of your wealth?

JumpingThroughHoops · 09/08/2012 15:16

Freedom Pass is for 60+ in London.

SoleSource · 09/08/2012 15:16

Judgy much?

HipHopSkipJumpomous · 09/08/2012 15:17

You get a Freedom pass (in London) when you hit a certain age. It's not means tested.

And I've always been apologetic paying for bus fares with notes. Giving out change seems to be routinely hated by all bus drivers the world over.

YABU - are you jealous? (I'm now thinking of the fun I could have with a roll of £20's).

missymoomoomee · 09/08/2012 15:18

And his financial and personal situation has what exactly to do with you?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/08/2012 15:18

If you have an illness where you are not allowed to drive e.g. some forms of epilepsy then you will be entitled to a Freedom Pass whatever your age or wealth.

ButHeNeverDid · 09/08/2012 15:18

May have been takings from a shop or Market stall. Not necessarily his money.

In any case, freedom passes are not means tested.

lurkerspeaks · 09/08/2012 15:18

YABU

Freedom pass is a non means tested pass for disabled or older people.

Therefore however much cash the person had is irrelevant.

FalseStartered · 09/08/2012 15:18

ah

in that case, OP you're an arsehole

yes this will most likely be deleted very soon but the fact will remain

RubyVaultingGates · 09/08/2012 15:19

It is funded by the local council/TFL and is indeed for disabled/elderly/special needs folk.
I think if I was that wealthy I wouldn't have applied for the damned thing in the first place... because I wouldn't want to be a drain on the limited resources.

And I really, really doubt he had one in the first place. Context of course, is everything.

OP posts:
HipHopSkipJumpomous · 09/08/2012 15:19

you can also apply for one if you are younger than 60 & have an eligible disability.

Meowmi · 09/08/2012 15:20

Have no idea what a freedom pass is, but if the man has one then surely must be entitled to it regardless of how much money he has.

valiumredhead · 09/08/2012 15:21

Everyone gets on over 60 iirc - it's not means tested.

So what if he had a wad of cash - jealous?

valiumredhead · 09/08/2012 15:22

I think it;s a standard thing you just get sent because my mum and dad wouldn't have applied for one.

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 09/08/2012 15:23

That cash could of been his savings and he could of been om the way to buy something he needed, medication, living aid, food.

Should all those who receive disability benefit have no money to spend Just in case it offends you too?

HipHopSkipJumpomous · 09/08/2012 15:24

Actually I think referring to 60-somethings as 'elderly' is totally uncool OP.

Why do you think cause he had cash he is wealthy? Out of the people I know the wealthy are the least likely to carry wads of cash. It's poorer people and older people (that I have know) who have cash on them (in quantity) - people who are paid wages in cash, or have takings from a stall, or just have a PO account and take income out in cash every week/month as that is how they run things. You've seen his money roll on the 9th of the month - might be a different story on the 29th of the month.

RubyVaultingGates · 09/08/2012 15:24

Not jealous, I wouldn't want to be in need of a Freedom Pass before retirement. Just eye-rollingly arrrrrrrgh, at the ever inventive ways the local population have of annoying bus drivers.

I do not begrudge anyone the freedom pass. But not being apologetic, in fact being deliberately dismissive when trying to board a bus with nothing smaller than a twenty pound note makes me inwardly scream.

And I don't think I know of anyone who is paid a legal wage in freshly minted twenties. Travelling in our part of the world with over a thousand pounds in your trackie bottoms having waved it around is not sensible.

OP posts:
RubyVaultingGates · 09/08/2012 15:25

He certainly wasn't over 60.

OP posts:
HipHopSkipJumpomous · 09/08/2012 15:25

You do have to apply valium and you have to reapply annually to renew it (I've seen the reminders on the bus)

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 09/08/2012 15:25

I do not begrudge anyone the freedom pass
Well that's clearly bullshit.
