In thinking that if you have a 2.5" thick roll of £20 notes ..

You probably don't need a Freedom Bus Pass.
Prat!

Sorry, but getting on the bus, claiming you've forgotten your Freedom Pass and then trying to pay a £2.50 bus fare with a freshly printed twenty pound note peeled ostentatioulsly from the thickest roll of the things I have ever seen and then having an argument with the driver about not having anything smaller does not garner any sympathy.

He did not appear to be disabled, was not in obvious pain, and actually ran for the bus.
I do understand the concept of concealed disablities, but really!

most people with severe epilepsy develop it during childhood

I get the bus every day. To work and back. So that's 2 buses.

I have never in my life judged why a person should or should not have a freedom pass, how much money they have in their pocket and how disgraceful they are for not having change.

I have also never seen a bus driver stop a bus because someone doesn't have change or forgets their freedom pass.

The only time the driver ever stopped the bus was when 7 clearly older than 16 (and trust me they were older) tried to say they had all lost their oyster cards at the same time.

That was funny.

NettOlympicSuperstar · 09/08/2012 16:00

I'm allowed to drive, have a car and am eligible for a free bus pass. Get meGrin
Free flights, there's an idea though, I should get those too.

FalseStartered · 09/08/2012 16:01

if he didn't intend on paying for his travel, why did he have money in his pocket?

OP, i think this was a pretty piss-poor attempt to wind us up

1/10

RubyVaultingGates · 09/08/2012 16:07

To reiterate:

  1. I believe the Freedom Pass is a wonderful thing.
  2. I understand the concept of invisible disablilites (I've acted as a trainer for disability awareness and worked as an enabler for a access officer in a disability action charity, I''ve also worked for Dial-A-Ride, and Shopmobility. Some of my friends are disabled.
  3. I am pondering why the response to this incident is so different on MN to in the real world.
  4. Context is everything.
  5. Bus drivers in Edmonton and related areas are clearly made of sterner stuff than those in the rest of London.

Actually, I think 3 is the most fascinating aspect.

maybe he was just feeling a bit flash re the roll of ££ in his pocket and was having a JOKE with the bus driver, cheeky chappy like?

He might have won some ££ on the gee gees or lottery and was feeling like showing off. Drug dealers are unlikely to be flashing their cash around on buses - they prefer to stay under the radar and ride bikes or drive BMW's (wildstereotypeface)

I doubt very much that this person was looking for your sympathy Ruby

People on buses tend to tut and catsbumface at anyone who does anything other than bleep their oystercard and sit down smartly. As a regular user with 2 small DC I'm well versed in this.

Could be HipHop. He probably shouldn't be booking himself a slot on the Edinburgh Fringe until he'd worked on his sense of humour though.

There was something very odd about the whole situation Fidgity. He was in his thirties, and didn't seem disorientated. He could or course, have been off hiis tits on something amusing however.

OP posts:
tethersphotofinish · 09/08/2012 16:16

So. You are cross because a man you think has no freedom pass shouldn't be eligible for the freedom pass he doesn't have. You think he was trying to avoid paying by getting a lot of money out of his pocket. This also means that he doesn't need the freedom pass he doesn't actually have. The bastard.

Have I got that right?

RubyVaultingGates · 09/08/2012 16:17

Nope I don't think so Tethers but I'll read it a again and make sure.

NovackNGood · 09/08/2012 16:17

How do you know it was not a roll of paper with a 20 wrapped around the outside and he was just trying the old classic con.

Who mentioned Edmonton?

Tis true though, our bus drivers have lost the will to live and wouldnt stop the bus if a man forgot his freedom pass.

I doubt they would stop the bus if it was on fire tbh.

HipHopSkipJumpomous · 09/08/2012 16:29

How many £20 are in a 2'.5" roll?

My estimate (using paper in my recycling/shredding pile) is about 80 = £1600
(verybusyreallyface)

DamnBamboo · 09/08/2012 16:29

I once had to get the bus when I only had notes on me.

It wasn't intentional and happened suddenly, should I also be on the receiving end of your vitriol.

Not even sure what you're mad about you've drip-fed so much.

Perhaps you are more cross about the whole thing because you think he is lying?

But you really don't know if he was or not, so why on earth are you cross?

And if he's entitled to his freedom pass and wants to use it, that's his business and not yours

YABU

SummerBreak · 09/08/2012 16:33

Really £1600 ? - I would have said £500 tops

"How many £20 are in a 2'.5" roll?"

Two foot five inches? Shock Grin

SummerBreak · 09/08/2012 16:38

That's a lot of money.

HipHopSkipJumpomous · 09/08/2012 16:38

Fidgety they are rolled up, not stacked - so would double up on themselves at least once. A ream of paper rolled up would be masshoove!!

I think you are probably right summerbreak

Maybe the OP was annoyed by the wheelbarrow used to carry that roll of notes tethers?

It is hard to get wheeled objects down those skinny aisles full of knees Grin
