As its illegal for under 18s to be in a betting shop as far as I know of course he asked you to leave when you couldn't confirm your age

I don't have a passport. I can't afford one just to use as ID. I don't drive. I can't afford to get a provisional license just to use as ID. (Some places don't even accept that, only a full license) The PASS cards are a good idea but I have been in several places which have signs up saying they do not accept them as ID (I know it's against the 'rules' but what do you do about it at that moment? take your money elsewhere )

Supermarkets and pubs/bars having an over 25 rule does not stop underage teenagers. In my experience (I've worked in 2 secondary schools) 90% of teenagers know where they can buy alcohol without being ID'd in their local area (not saying 90% do so but they will know). They don't need to go to a pub or supermarket. Or they'll get someone to buy it for them. Or get an older friend to buy everyone's drink at once.

I would never be rude or aggressive to someone who ID'd me (exasperated or surprised maybe) but there have been times when underage teenagers from schools I worked in have been drinking in a pub that has refused to serve me.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 05/08/2012 18:30

Short of microchipping every baby and fitting all shops with a scanner I really don't think there is another way :( I'm sure the person who adjec you to leave really didn't mean to offend u but when your told to fuck off every five mins by some gobby twat who thinks they can argure their way past the law then yeah he might have been in a bit of a foul mood :( I'm sorry you were treated that way op but Its the law we have to do it :(

GhostShip · 05/08/2012 18:32

I bought a citiziens card, it's what asda recommends. Fair play works in ASDA. Try to get in a club or bar with the bloody thing you. 'passport or drivers license only' is something I hate. I had to buy a provisional JUST to take to my university interview Confused

rushgirl28 · 05/08/2012 18:32

No only got a cheap mobile phone cost £14.00

How odd, my DS has never had his citizens card refused as ID.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 05/08/2012 18:34

I know people who have been refused with a citizen card, If I were them though I'd demand to see a manager.

The only time I've been angry about being asked for I.D was when the girl asking knew me, and knew that I was older than she was, and she also knew the girl who was with me who did have I.D was younger than me too. She was blatantly just being a twat because I called her mate a fat bitch once. (In retaliation to her making jibes about my weight for months).

And when tesco refused to serve my mum because I was with her. That was hilarious though tbh, my mum kicked off!

In all seriousness though, I think you're being unreasonable and should just get some I.D or else accept you may be refused service.

rushgirl28 · 05/08/2012 18:36

Maybe they should make citizen cards so they are accepted everywhere.

Unfortunately at 12pm on King Street (street full of clubs and pubs) asking to see a doormans manager is the last thing someone could do ha. Plus if you did they'd see it as you getting smart, they'd then radio through to all the other places and then that's you not getting in anywhere. It's wrong and crap.

The government needs to create one that works across the board, with as much strength as a passport. But one that isn't so expensive.

Shullbit · 05/08/2012 18:39

That's just reminded me. One time I popped the shops with my DP's sister who was 18 at the time. I was buying some alcohol for a family get together and even though I had ID, they refused to sell it to me as his sister didn't have ID and I could be buying it for her. I mean, where does it stop? I have my young teenage sister stay with me every single school holiday, are they going to refuse a sale in case I am buying it for her? How about my 8 year old?

It is getting a tad ridiculous to be fair. Next it will be Think 28.

usualsuspect · 05/08/2012 18:40

On the other hand I know girls that borrow each others passports to use as ID Grin

Sirzy · 05/08/2012 18:41

Completly off topic but can't help but wondering if ghost ship is thinking of the same king street as me - because if it is wigan then they have changed a lot of anywhere actually cares how old people are!

GhostShip · 05/08/2012 18:43

Sirzy yeah I am ha. Wiganer here ;)

It has changed quite a lot. I'm 20 now and get ID'd constantly. I first went round Wigan town when I was 14, never got ID'd once! I was talking to a friend about this the other day funnily enough, they're coming down hard now because of all the trouble they've had. Especially as all the clubs are on Facebook now and people have been pointing out the underage people in the photos.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 05/08/2012 18:45

Ghostship - I was thinking shops not nightclubs.

rushgirl28 · 05/08/2012 18:45

i wouldnt b suprised if they did have think 28 next

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 05/08/2012 18:47

Unfortunately they press the 'obviously years older than 25 button' on the till when I shop for alcohol.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 05/08/2012 18:49

Shullbit - That was my mums argument. I was 19 at the time and my mum was asking the woman on the till "So you think my daughter is underage, and won't sell me alchohol incase I give an underage child alcohol? What sort of parent do you think I am? Would you refuse to sell it if my 13 year old were here? Or what about my 6 month old granddaughter since I'm clearly so irresponsible that I need someone half my age working in tesco to prevent me from giving children alcohol".

I was pissing myself.

Ghostship - I'm not far from wigan! I don't go out though I'm not one for drinking outings!

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 05/08/2012 18:51

Rushgirl - well, if you go get some I.D then a think 28 scheme wouldn't affect you.

Seriously, you're still going though? Get over it! You were I.D'd ffs and you're going on like they kicked your dog or something terrible.

GhostShip · 05/08/2012 18:54

I don't blame you queen it's not the best of nights outs anyway wether you're a drinker or not. Too much drama!

On topic, I got ID'd the other day by some bint who was younger than me in school. I KNOW she knows me because everyone did, and I stopped her from bullying a couple of the younger girls. Blatantly trying to have a bit of a power grab. Cow.

Shullbit · 05/08/2012 19:05

I have never been drinking around Wigan. Come from an area not that far from there though so have been shopping around there. I shall take note and not bother to go there for a night out in future Wink

That situation is ridiculous TheQueen, where does it stop exactly? I would love for someone who knows the ins and outs to come on and explain.
