to be annoyed that SIL has started forward facing her DD?

She is 9 months. I know this is the 'minimum' age, however when I said "god, they grow so fast didnt realise she was passed the minimum weight" she said it was age. I replied that I thought it was weight, but apparently "some are age, some are weight"

Confused

I have seen the videos of 'internal decapitation' and have read up on rear facing and the benefits and want to do it as long as possible.

I actually feel cross that they don't look into these things and have turned her forward.

no point being annoyed. her kid, her car, her choices. It's not illegal.

GnocchiNineDoors · 04/08/2012 21:51

I know.

IABU.

Still makes me cross.

Most people turn their children forward at 9 months because that's what all the shops, mainstream websites and health visitors etc advise.

They're just going on the information that they have - I think it's awful, yes, that these sources of information are so wrong, but I don't get angry at people over it. My health visitor told me it was unsafe Shock to have a child rear facing if they were over 9kg!

(Possibly have mellowed though. I remember feeling similar when DS was about 9 months old.)

MyinnergoddessisatLidl · 04/08/2012 21:51

I thought it was weight as well op.

Was she driving them to distraction rear facing in the car? DS used to get mightily bored, or irritated by moving lights. But we just kept up the screen and hung a gajillion dangly things.

It is her responsibility to read up on this and act safely op, so I guess you'll have to accept her opinion.

Uppermid · 04/08/2012 21:51

None of your business. How would you feel if she were the one questioning your choices?

elliejjtiny · 04/08/2012 21:52

YANBU. I kept DS1 and DS2 rear facing for as long as possible and DS3 is still rear facing aged 18 months. DH keeps moaning that I'm babying him and being precious last born.

honeytea · 04/08/2012 21:53

YABU The kids are rear facing till they are 4 here but i don't judge other people who choose to do it earlier. It's their kids their choice.

worriedwretch · 04/08/2012 21:54

9 months. Pah.

My friend has turned her precious first born forward facing at FIVE MONTHS

I'm saying nothing. It's pointless.

GnocchiNineDoors · 04/08/2012 21:54

Upper I really wouldn't mind her quesitoning my decisions - I enjoy a good chatter about who does what what way incase I can learn something from it.

I suppose my feeling in general is that she doesn't actively seek out up to date information and look beyond what is there on the shelf. She takes everything at face value and never looks for an alternative or 'best for her' option.

We turned our DD forward facing when she hit the minimum weight because I was told by HV that it was safer to do so. It was several months later that i found out i'd been given bad advice by which time she was a lot older and thankfully nothing bad had happened. There is a lot of conflicting info out there though. Ultimately though it's her choice.

Is it a new car seat or the old one turned around? If she's tall (even if she's not heavy) her head could easily be out of the baby car seat and she needs to move up - yes you can still buy rear facing for the next stage but they are very expensive compared to forward facing.

MyinnergoddessisatLidl · 04/08/2012 21:55

But you can get rear facing for older children, it is the safest way and used for most Scandanavian countries isn't it?

pinkappleby · 04/08/2012 21:55

YANBU. I have been known to send people info on rearfacing while baby is very small, before they spend money on a ff next stage seat.

If anything terrible happens I won't be wracked with guilt of if only I had said something.

Not sure what you do when she has already purchased one though.

Belmo · 04/08/2012 21:56

I'm not sure! I'm about to turn my dd forward at 11 months, she's almost 30lb though so very definately over the weight limit and I can't afford a rear facing carseat.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 04/08/2012 21:56

dd2 stayed rear facing until she was about one. Then she went into the car seat that dd1 had used because it was still perfect. I would have liked to have bought the latest car seat but it just wasn't possible and we only really drive in the city so there are never any high speeds.

honeytea · 04/08/2012 21:57

PO how old was your child when you changed to ff? Or how old will they be?

DuelingFanjo · 04/08/2012 21:57

it is weight but not everyone can afford to buy one of the more expensive rear-facing seats for heavier/older children. Even those of us who really really love our children and would never want to do them any harm.

Haylebop12 · 04/08/2012 21:58

I turned my dd at 8 months, she was too long for her rear facing seat. She could sit up. her child and like other posts it's it illegal. Sometimes you just gotta accept not everyone parents the same

pinkappleby · 04/08/2012 21:58

DontmindifIdo - I agree the cost is an issue. I haven't sent info to friends that I know would not spend the money.

GnocchiNineDoors · 04/08/2012 21:58

It is a new, Stage 1,2,3 Forward facing car seat. Definetly not her bucket seat which she still fits in.

They could afford an ERF seat.

DH and I are currently squirrelling away some money to see if we can afford one (how we will get one I don't know as we are miles and miles from the Safety Centre that sells them).

OP posts:
GnocchiNineDoors · 04/08/2012 22:02

MyDD is 7mo and still has plenty of growing room in her infant seat which we will keep her in until her head starts going over the top.

After that, I really do not know.
