To think it's disgusting to wash up without rinsing?

Just that really!
I really can't understand how seemingly clean people lather their dirty dishes and just put them to dry without rinsing the foam off. All the germs and soap residue are left on the plates surely?

Yuk. Revolting!

I think dish washing tablets are a bit more caustic than washing up liquid.

GrassIsntGreener · 02/08/2012 09:15

We have a small sink so no posh wash/rinse combo but I always always rinse.

Never thought of it in ways of germs, I just hate hate hate having a slight soap taste mixed with my food and drink! Yuck.

usualsuspect · 02/08/2012 09:18

And its very unhygienic to dry with as tea towel. much better to let your dishes air dry.

cubbie · 02/08/2012 09:23

YANBU

It's like washing your hair in the bath, then rinsing it in the bath!!! YUK!!
I 've had a dishwasher for a few years but was always fanatical scrupulous about individually rinsing each dish. No wonder there are hoespipe bans!

Wash, rinse, it's not rocket science!!

usualsuspect · 02/08/2012 09:25

What if you only have a bath though.

Kladdkaka · 02/08/2012 09:27

Non- rinsers; why do you think there is a long rinse cycle in washing machines and dishwashers?

To stop the clenchers taking it all out afterwards and washing it all again.

Trills · 02/08/2012 09:27

IT's not "disgusting"< it's just not ideal.

My mum insists on doing washing up in my house. I don't know why, maybe it;s the novelty, as she's had a dishwasher for the last 20 years. Maybe it's just because she can't stand to see some plates sitting waiting to be washed. EIther way, she is not very good at it and it't really not that helpful.

Trills · 02/08/2012 09:29

I take it that those of you who rinse wouldn't use the same coffee mug all day yesterday, then rescue it from the festering pile of washing up this morning and give it a quick swill...

That's different - that mug is only lined with old tea. Old tea + new tea tastes of tea. Fairy liquid + new tea is not nice!

ShatnersBassoon · 02/08/2012 09:35

I don't think it's disgusting. Probably not great from an aesthetics point of view, but nothing grotty about it. You'd have to use too much detergent to leave a taste on washed dishes, and a quick rinse is going to do nothing to kill germs. Washing up is meant to clean things, not sterilise them. Rinsing dishes before you start is a better way to ensure an effective wash.

My dishwasher rinses, I think because there are harmful caustic ingredients in dishwasher tablets. Also because the machine dries the dishes quickly with high heat so if there were traces of detergent left on everything it would come out looking streaky and chalky.

TwoStepsBack · 02/08/2012 09:38

Surely the answer is to make washing up liquid that tastes of wine & chocolate?

BupcakesandCunting · 02/08/2012 09:42

I only rinse cups and glasses. CBA doing every fucker else as well.

But then I am Filth Personified.

I have a loo brush and my bed sheets only get changed when Hale Bopp does an orbit.

usualsuspect · 02/08/2012 09:44

I've had 3 cups of tea this morning in the same cup Shock

Trills · 02/08/2012 09:47

You do a shocked face for that? Amateur

usualsuspect · 02/08/2012 09:48

I like to live on the edge.

elizaregina · 02/08/2012 10:56

I dont understand why people who dont wash under " running water" and with a ten years old sponge harbouring goodness knows what think they are cleaning, becasue they are simply moving visible dirt off a plate.

To me a clean plate is one washed with a sponge that is new or a few days old and sterlised under boiling water - under running water - rinsed and left to air dry...

Offices and toddler groups - washing up by hand in sink full of debris WITH an old manky sponge makes me feel sick.

I saw one of these health programs once and they said - an old kitchen sponge harbours MORE DIRT AND SALMONELLA ETC THAN YOUR LOO!!!

Overcooked · 02/08/2012 10:58

I agree, you should rinse before washing so there aren't big bits of food 'bobbing around'. I bet you double or triple rinsers are the kind that have the rubber gloves and dettol on permanant stand by and have piss poor immune systems as a result.

Actually come to think of it I bet you're the types that just love to sepnd their lives cleaning - very sad imo.

elizaregina · 02/08/2012 11:01

We have to remember that most " germs" are not visible to the naked eye.....great washing off a blob of food before you dunk it into a vat of filth - of unseen to the naked eye ....germs....YUK.

germyrabbit · 02/08/2012 11:02

being over hygeinic will kill off the human race at this rate.

Floggingmolly · 02/08/2012 11:02

I'd happily drink out of the same mug all day with barely a swill out between refills - but it's my mug, that makes a hell of a difference. If anyone else had used it, it'd be straight in the dishwasher!

ShatnersBassoon · 02/08/2012 11:02

"an old kitchen sponge harbours MORE DIRT AND SALMONELLA ETC THAN YOUR LOO!!!"

Ooh, I'll start rinsing the smaller items in the toilet. Great water saving tip there.

usualsuspect · 02/08/2012 11:03

I like a nice germ, builds up your immune system.

Thumbwitch · 02/08/2012 11:04

I rinse my dishes. I can't bear the thought of the dishwashing liquid residue being swallowed. Especially if it's an antibacterial one (which it isn't in my house, I don't "do" antibacterial everything, it's daft - I use bleach where needed and that's it)

usualsuspect · 02/08/2012 11:06

THE GERMS ARE GOING TO GET YOU!

Overcooked · 02/08/2012 11:08

Elizaregina - what an utter waste of water to wash dishes in running water - what do you think will happen to you if you don't?

dreamingbohemian · 02/08/2012 11:10

Now I'm even more confused. So all you non-rinsers are actually rinsing plates before you clean them? Eh?

Scraping food off, yes, I understand. But rinsing them, THEN putting soap on, then not rinsing?

Why not scrape, soap, THEN rinse?
