To think it's disgusting to wash up without rinsing?

Just that really!
I really can't understand how seemingly clean people lather their dirty dishes and just put them to dry without rinsing the foam off. All the germs and soap residue are left on the plates surely?

Yuk. Revolting!

CinnabarRed, I was brought up proper, so I just politely gulp whatever I am offered. :)

To be honest, while I am a committed rinser, I am not bothered in other people's houses unless there are obvious signs of violation of hygiene standards like pieces of food stuck to forks.

I agree

I don't actually think it is disgusting to not rinse, I just think that rinsing is better.

I rinse and I am not bothered what other people do. We have a middle small sink between the main one and the drainer and our hot water takes about two minutes to run through hot (long way from the boiler), so I put the plug in the middle sink, fill that with the cold water running to hot, then put some hot in the main sink (in a bowl) to wash up, dunk everything in the middle sink to rinse and place on the drainer. It's not perfect as the middle sink gradually gets soapy, but it's only a few bits and bobs that can't go in the DW and it's better than not rinsing at all.

frigging hell re the tea towel

re running hot water, I see what people are saying about paranoia re wastage (my grandfather used to boil the kettle rather than waste all the hot water in the pipes from the upstairs boiler...), but really, if you use running hot water to fill the washing up bowl it's no different really to carry on using the same hot water to rinse, as long as you don't fill the washing up bowl, even if you don't have a combi boiler.
