To think it's disgusting to wash up without rinsing?

Just that really!
I really can't understand how seemingly clean people lather their dirty dishes and just put them to dry without rinsing the foam off. All the germs and soap residue are left on the plates surely?

Yuk. Revolting!

I have one sink. No bowl. I don't keep the tap running all the time, I just flick it on to rinse and flick off again while I wash the next item. I am also the fastest washer I know so this doesn't make for tedious slow washing up. :)

I put a couple of inches of water in the sink with the fairy. The stuff is washed in the water in the sink and the nice hot rinse water also goes in the same sink. By the end of the wash I have a full sink and a draining board of sparkly dishes and cutlery.

Have I strayed into 1955!! Ffs.

JennerOSity · 02/08/2012 15:10

No don't be silly - I don't think anyone rinsed at all in 1955! Personally I am strangely enthralled by this thread myself. I think I like the escapism of a trivial topic as opposed to more weighty matters. Grin

WavingLeaves · 02/08/2012 15:10

"But where do you put these washed (but not rinsed) dishes, until you rinse them?"

They don't get put anywhere.

I wash the dish (in about 1/3 to 1/2 a bowl of hot soapy water), I have the hot tap running very slowly over the bowl, so when the dish is soaped and scrubbed I swill the soapy dish under the stream of water, and put on the draining board.

Sometimes I flick the tap on and off as I rinse, depends on the speed of washing.

Yes, like that.

This only works if you live in a house with reasonably effective hot water system of course.

Yes... which I don't, hence my confusion! Do some houses really have instant hot water as soon as the tap goes on, rather than having to "run it hot"? Blush

Trills · 02/08/2012 15:24

It's called a combi boiler.

Trills · 02/08/2012 15:26

If you have a hot water tank then you can only do the rinsing thing if you remember to make it make hot water for you in advance, and if you are not planning to use the hot water for anything else for a little while.

That's OK for us (rented house, crap plumbing) because we have showers in the morning, but perhaps not so good if you intend to run a bath for children (or if you already did bath your children so there is no hot water left).

I think my mum (and anyone who does it the way their mums did it) would never have contemplated rinsing because she couldn't imagine a world in which not water would not be in short supply. Having a running hot tap would be unthinkable.

Yes, this is massively annoying and is a hindrance. I often have to rinse in cold-ish water.

olimpia · 02/08/2012 15:29

jenner agree with you. I've always wondered about it and out of boredom decided to ask on MB yesterday.
I've learnt so much about it! Like the fact that non rinsers genuinely don't think it's disgusting not to. I've always thought it was laziness but realise now it's cultural and stems from home education decades ago.
TBH if it wasn't because it doesnt take me longer to rinse and I don't use more water by rinsing I would almost convert to not rinsing after this thread...

Trills · 02/08/2012 15:31

non rinsers genuinely don't think it's disgusting not to.

And non-ironers genuinely don't think they look crumpled.

(I am a non-ironer)

:)

olimpia · 02/08/2012 15:34

I'm a non-ironer rinser too Grin
DH loves to iron at the weekend Grin

JennerOSity · 02/08/2012 15:34

Trills Grin

I also don't iron, but avoid buying clothes which crease easily. Does this mean I am crumpled or not?

JennerOSity · 02/08/2012 15:36

Olimpia you have started a thread which is now 14 pages long! I have never captured that much imagination.... how does it feel?

CMOTDibbler · 02/08/2012 15:37

Non ironer, non crumpled here too - I buy wisely and dry on hangers

CinnabarRed · 02/08/2012 15:37

So - to the rinsers - what do you do when you go to someone's house and you don't know whether they're a rinser or a non-rinser?

Shock

Would you refuse a cuppa, on the off chance that the mug hadn't been rinsed?

CinnabarRed · 02/08/2012 15:38

Just think of the lips on the rim of the cup, the saliva, the curdling milk residue...

Grin
NotaDisneyMum · 02/08/2012 15:40

Definitely! The whole idea of leaving a tap, particularly a hot tap, running for any length of time makes me really uncomfortable!

We have a hot water tank and it only heats water when we need it in the morning (for our showers) and evening (for the dishes and DC's showers) - if we ran the tap while were were washing dishes, we'd need to heat more water - and our water is metered as well, so even if the water wasn't heating, we'd still have to pay for the tank to refill with cold water!

JennerOSity · 02/08/2012 15:41

Cinnabar I rinse but would not refuse a cuppa as that would be bad manners. Grin I have even accepted a cuppa from someone I know who is very slatternly your worst imagination could hardly cover it I know it won't kill me, so I just don't think about it (doesn't mean I want to live like that though)

I am currently in a related dilemma though as recently found out that a friends DH blows his nose on their T-towels and now don't want to eat at their house again, but how do I not when it is a regular thing it would be very difficult to refuse without saying why!

JennerOSity · 02/08/2012 15:43

If you only use one sinkful of hot water even when you rinse it won't cause metered water problems or hot water supply problems. Rinsing doesn't equate to using gallons of hot water. Confused

olimpia · 02/08/2012 15:46

blows his nose on their T-towels
Jesus Christ!

JennerOSity · 02/08/2012 15:49

I know - I was nearly sick in my mouth when he told me. Apparently no tissue or hanky is big or strong enough. he can't see the problem. They are otherwise naice middle class people who look normal! Shock

olimpia · 02/08/2012 15:50

Hopefully they're non rinsers then!

OP posts:
JennerOSity · 02/08/2012 15:51

I was so shocked I missed the chance to ask if it is boil washed after the blow. Now I can't ask as I don't want to bring it up, so now I'll never know and am all uncomfortable trying not to think about it. Was at their house recently and had a cuppa. ho hum.
