To think Great Britain and England should have different National Antthems

Following on from the Ryan Giggs and the other non English players in the men's and ladies teams not singing God Save The Queen.

Personally I think it's inevitable that these players migjt not want to or feel odd singing it due to the fact that team GB doesn't exist out side of the Olympics and a) these players will always be used to singing their own Athems before matches, b) God Save etc is Englands anthem too so is always sung by the "opposition" in any home international v England.

If England had their own anthem like the scots and the welsh and GB had its own anthem it wouldn't be a problem.

They do. The NA of England is Land of Hope and Glory. But they dont play it.

MrsKeithRichards · 27/07/2012 17:46

England should use their own anthem and own flag so when we compete as great Britain people notice a difference.

bisjolympics · 27/07/2012 17:48

I thought they used Land of Hope and Glory at the Commonwealth Games? They certainly used to. England does have its own flag as well!

I agree with you OP. I think it would be a great thing if England had their own anthem.

However I would also like the GB anthem to be changed.

MrsKeithRichards · 27/07/2012 17:51

Own flag? No shit Sherlock. They should use it!

Something other the God Save The Queen should be the official English anthem or something else appointed for the whole of the Uk.

The bit about killing Scottish people makes it a bit unsuitable.

somebloke123 · 27/07/2012 17:52

It's a tricky one. If one was starting again from scratch then yes you're right. But we're not starting from scratch and I think there would be a resistance to changing a fairly long standing tradition in the name of tidiness and logicality.

If we did have an English anthem though I might go for "Jerusalem".

Or alternatively Flanders and Swans' ditty "The English the English the English are best, I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest".

MrsKeithRichards · 27/07/2012 17:53

England/=Great Britain

MrsKeithRichards · 27/07/2012 17:54

How about Fat Les and Vindaloo?

ClaireRacing · 27/07/2012 17:54

I think each sports federation decides on their own anthem. English soccer has GSTQ, Commonwealth Games has LOHAG, Cricket has Jerusalem.

Bottom line is that GSTQ is the national anthem for the UK.

I went to school in Scotland and we always finished speech day with GSTQ. It wasn't controversial at all. We sang it with pride.

MissAnnersley · 27/07/2012 17:56

I really love 'I vow to thee my country'.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 27/07/2012 17:58

I've not read all the words for a very long time (used to know it all for Guides) Bit startled to read the final verse though it made me giggle a bit. Those pesky rebellious Scots Wink

(hope that came across in the manner I meant it!)

MissAnnersley · 27/07/2012 18:00

We are pesky. Grin

Well I certainly am.

MissAnnersley · 27/07/2012 18:01

I love the hymn Jerusalem too. It always reminds me of Chariots of fire.

God Save The Queen is the National Anthem for the entire UK, and as such is entirely fitting for Team GB in the Olympics, and indeed any sport in which the Home Nations do not compete separately.

The disgrace occurs when the UK National Anthem is used for only one of the Home Nations in events where they compete separately. England is disadvantaged, and should indeed have its own anthem as the others do.

DawEtoHaul · 27/07/2012 18:02

lunatic is right, there is no official national anthem for England, although I believe an MP tabled an early day motion discussing it. God Save the Queen, jersualem, lohag etc are used by convention for certain sports. God Save the Queen is the de facto anthem for GB. But as a Welsh woman I know I wouldn't be too keen on singing one of the anthems used for England, they should definitely choose something more neutral - it's offensive that an English tune is used for the whole of Britain.

bureni · 27/07/2012 18:03

As regards "Team GB" shouldnt the team be called Team U.K? The union flag is also a bit of a mess since it only represents Scotland and Wales plus a country (Ireland) that left the Commonwealth in 1949 so why is St.Patricks cross still part of the union flag? Neither Ireland (ROI) or Northern Ireland use St.Patricks cross as their national flag so why it is still used in the union flag.
Same applies to the Eurovision song contest, since N.I has never represented the U.K in this contest but instead represents all of Ireland why is the British song entry called the U.K entry and not the G.B entry.
Going back to the OP, I do agree that England should have its own national anthem instead of having to borrow the U.Ks anthem.

Salmotrutta · 27/07/2012 18:03

See, why not have the Theme for Chariots of Fire.

Then we could all just hum along rather than singing and pretending to know the words.

ClaireRacing · 27/07/2012 18:07

I think they are using the Vangelis Chariots of Fire theme tune for the medal presentations.

DawEtoHaul · 27/07/2012 18:09

Lol at ''England is disadvantaged'. The hilarity!
