To think Great Britain and England should have different National Antthems

Following on from the Ryan Giggs and the other non English players in the men's and ladies teams not singing God Save The Queen.

Personally I think it's inevitable that these players migjt not want to or feel odd singing it due to the fact that team GB doesn't exist out side of the Olympics and a) these players will always be used to singing their own Athems before matches, b) God Save etc is Englands anthem too so is always sung by the "opposition" in any home international v England.

If England had their own anthem like the scots and the welsh and GB had its own anthem it wouldn't be a problem.

We need at least one bloody Scotsman good enough to play for Team Britannia

Bureni- the Welsh are in NO way represented on the union flag.

Due to the fact the English invaded and conquered, whereas Scotland was joined by an act of Union.

It rankles, even more so when people get it wrong.Wink

bisjolympics · 27/07/2012 19:24

Isn't it because Wales was already united with England before the union flag was introduced? Not a separate country then so no separate flag required.

YANBU, it's a ridiculous situation.
"God Save the queen" is fairly alienating for Scots.

picnicbasketcase · 27/07/2012 19:49

YANBU. I'd be happy to have LOHAG or IVTTMC. Or even There'll always be an England.

laracroft2001 · 27/07/2012 19:52

Rule Britannia for the GB anthem

OooohShiny · 27/07/2012 19:52

I still think Billy Connolly had the right idea...GSTQ is so dreich and dirgy that we should have the theme tune from The Archers as the UK natioonal anthem...it would cheer us all up so much Grin

ISnt Englands Land of hope and Glory ? or Jerusalem ? one of the 2 or baby both if England want to be greedy Wink

Mrsjay · 27/07/2012 20:09

Billy Connoly once said the national anthem was a wee bit boring so he wanted the ARGHERS theme tune Grin scotlands flower of scotland was written in the 50s or 60s by a folk singer, It has just been adopted by Rugby fans and drunks at weddings

Mrsjay · 27/07/2012 20:10

ARCHERS*

DawEtoHaul · 27/07/2012 21:10

Agreed again, lunatic Grin. Even more tragically ironic we don't have more legislative independence when you consider how advanced and progressive the laws of Hywel Dda were.

Wales was part of the Kingdom of England at the time of the Scottish union, which produced the first Union flag, and similarly I understand Ireland was already understood to be joined in the person of the king, and wasn't initially therefore represented in the flag; however it later came to be represented in the current flag after the 1800 Act - but Wales was never really considered, I think, until very recently, when I seem to remember the culture secretary saying she was all for the flag being progressive and inclusive - and then nothing happened!

Latara · 27/07/2012 21:49

I like the Union Jack flag because of the patterns & colours; it's iconic & smart.

I'm English but wouldn't use the English flag because of the EDL / football hooligan connotations.

I feel British rather than just English.

So i would like all parts of the UK (inc. Northern Ireland) to only use the Union Jack; & to have just one parliament with the same laws / rules for all of the UK; & one national team for all sporting events.
I would like everyone to be properly united & equal, not divided & nationalistic.
The church & state should be separate IMO & sectarianism should be a hate crime just like racism is...
But this is just my ideal & a lot of MNers & even my family & friends have opposite opinions.

GSTQ is not a good anthem for the UK; the anti-Scots verse should have been written out & banned long ago - i didn't even know about that & was shocked that verse still exists. It's horrible.
Also GSTQ is the worst boring dirge ever.

Our anthem should be lively not boring so it's actually enjoyable to sing it.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/07/2012 19:38

Or we could just cut the crap and have Hey Jude as it seems we're stuck with that anyway.

Hey Liz?

PenisVanLesbian · 28/07/2012 19:43

The british anthem is an embarrassment and an anachronism. I don;t know how you still sing it, I wouldn't if you paid me.

ReallyTired · 28/07/2012 19:48

Surely "God Save the Queen" is the British national anthmn. Often "Jesusalem" is sung for English events. I would be quite happy for Jesualem to become the national anthen for England.

I think "land of hope and glory" is far to jingoistic and not appropiate for 21st century.

"- it's offensive that an English tune is used for the whole of Britain."

Some people get offended too easily. You could argue that a welsh tune would be offensive to scots, scots tune will be offensive to the northen irish etc. blah!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Save_the_Queen

What really surprises me is that Northen Ireland has no offical anthen

PenisVanLesbian · 28/07/2012 19:52

Who said anything about being offended? Hmm

PenisVanLesbian · 28/07/2012 19:53

and you're really surprised that NI doesn't have an anthem? Do you want to maybe think about that one for a minute.....?

DawEtoHaul · 28/07/2012 19:54

'Some people get offended too easily'

Can I suggest you never set foot in Wales really, especially not my neck of the woods. I doubt you'd last long enough to hot foot it back Smile

DawEtoHaul · 28/07/2012 19:55

'blah!'

Biscuit
Westcountrylovescheese · 28/07/2012 19:58

WelshMoth · 28/07/2012 20:18

Daw, are you north or south?
