piercing a young childs ears........

I really don't understand why a parent would want to take their young child out and get their ears pierced!! Having a stranger, or even someone you know, either using a piercing gun to pierce their ears, or using a needle (not sure which one is used for young children) I personally think it should be illegal for a parent to make this decision. Or maybe not that strong, but at least an age limit. Why can't the child make that decision for themselves when they are older. Why take a baby, or even a toddler out to get their ears pierced!!?? In my eyes, its a form of child abuse. Its no different to hitting your child, etc. You are causing them pain, quite often making them bleed, all so they 'look nice' well i think it looks horrible! I've not seen one child/baby that i think awww cute. I have piercings myself and i will not be getting my DD's ears pierced until i feel she is old enough to make that decision for herself and only then, will it be after she has been talking about it for a little while.

Guys actually read through what ghostship said. It wasn't nasty and she spoke some sense. Seems a bit harsh to delete for petty reasons. This is a debate. Don't just report if you don't like someone else's opinion it completely undermines the discussion. And in this case means the topic isn't even being talked about anymore! It has just descended into an argument.
Back to the topic?

Ghostship was deleted for a nasty PA on zukiecat

Much as I'm not fond of piercings on very small children, I really don't see how anyone can think earrings are going to attract paedophiles. How are ears sexual? Should little girls not be allowed to wear a bracelet or necklace either in case it attracts the attention of some shadowy perv?

bunnybing · 27/07/2012 20:53

Ecgwynn - that's the sort of thing my mother would say. In her case she would say 'don't swear, gypsies swear' ...yeah as do you, mother. DD had her ears pierced, aged 9, because that was when I thought she'd be able to look her ears/earrings. I warned her it would be like having a blood taken or having a vaccinationa and she still wanted it done.

Actually, she said it hardly hurt at all.

Kayano · 27/07/2012 20:54

So she was the one who couldn't hack it. I knew it! GrinWink

GhostShip · 27/07/2012 20:55

Thankyou Krumbum

Usualsuspect I retaliated to someone saying they'd reported me. Might as well give them something to actually reporting me for.

Anyway Im sure I was toddling off with my tail between my legs...

usualsuspect · 27/07/2012 20:56

You still here?

GhostShip · 27/07/2012 20:56

Yes I'm still here as zukie thought it appropriate to message me with the whole 'I don't know why you hate me so much' etc etc self pitying drivel.

And zukie I'd appreciate it if you don't message me again because I haven't done anything wrong and if you think you're going to get any sympathy with what you've mentioned it isn't going to happen.

We all have problems but we don't all go on a reporting spree when we feel offended. There's no point going on a forum if you can't handle things like this.

OlympiaMumsnet · 27/07/2012 21:19

Hi GhostShip
FWIW we let your initial post stand as we agree it wasn't
And since I was having to post peace and love on a night when most folk are celebrating fair play etc and trying to watch the Olympic ceremony I saw
your post and deleted
PA's by PM aren't allowed though.

HTH

PEACE AND LOVE AGAIN.

What's a PA by PM please?

GhostShip · 27/07/2012 21:26

I have never said I disliked you.

I replied like I always do to someone on a forum. You've taken it completely overboard.

You need to stop this now, it's unhealthy. And to answer your personal message, no I am not someone you know.

Now back off, this is ridiculous. and I'm busy watching batman

Zuciecat. I know you accepted my apology but wanted to add my comments were not a personal attack as a recent poster was unsure, and my opinion for what I can remember used the offending term used from a previous post. I am not going to search to justify what I said as I am responsible for stating my own opinion. However, I would never intentionally want to offend anybody and for this I am genuinely sorry.

Having really young children's ears pierced for the sake of it I can't understand, but I realise it's sometimes done for cultural/religious reasons and at the end of the day it's not my business (although that blog was horrific).

I had mine done just before I turned 10 and my overriding memory is not so much the pain which was unpleasant but brief, but the amount of faff to look after them properly. My friend had hers done at the same time but they went septic and she had to let them heal and have them re-done months later.

I have told DD (nearly 8) that she will have to be at least 10, and more importantly, willing and able to look after them properly without being nagged.

Since we have to constantly remind her about teeth cleaning and loo flushing at the mo, I suspect I won't have to worry about it for a while yet, and tbh it's not something she's desperate to do anyway.

charllie · 28/07/2012 01:03

blimey, wasn't expecting to come back on and find all of this!
I would just like to point out that when i posted this, i was only talking of young children - babies, toddlers, those who aren't able to make that sort of decision for themselves. I wasn't aiming it at children who are able to say they want their ears pierced, who go on about it for ages etc. My DD is 6 and if she was to ask me now, i'd say no, but if she carried on asking over the next year, i might think about it. I have piercings myself, i dont' have anything against them, just don't like seeing young children with their ears pierced. Someone said its none of my business what others do with their children, i agree completely, but i'm entitled to an opinion which is what this post was :)

My friend had her ears pierced as a baby and now the holes are all wonky Sad I personally wouldn't do it, but I'm guilty of a lot of other parenting fails. We all parent differently.

While piercing babies may have it's medical implications (really minor), this is basically a cultural thing.

I am surprised at seeing how anglosaxon people are so scared of piercing their babies, to the extend that they are irrational. (Seen this in USA, Canadia, UK, Australian sites.)

I've just been to a few Spanish websites (from Spain, in Europe) searching for the same thing (perforar oidos) and I am amazed by the difference. People there pierce their babies as soon as they are born, or after 2 or 3 days, no more. The same nurses who helped them in labour may be the ones doing this.

I saw a few women desperate because they hadn't pierced their 14 or 16 month old daughters' ears. They thought they had left it for too late. And here I see people willing to wait until their children are 16years old!

Basically, what I understand is that they believe piercing baby girls as soon as they are born is the best as their ears are so thin that needles would not cause any pain at all. There is no blood and little risk of infection.

Also, thinking babies or little girls look cute or don't look cute with earings, is also a cultural thing. Have you seen these tribes in Africa where they do all sorts of things to their bodies? I personally find that disgusting but for those people those transformations are just beauty treatments.
