Men hitting back in self defence?

Have just been shown a shocking video on you tube of a girl attacking a man (i assume it was her friends taking the video on their mobiles?) and the man punched her back and knocked her out. AIBU to think that it served her right? DP seems to think IABU and that man should have just run away. I kinda feel conflicted now, violence is never good but i am struggling to get past the feeling that she reaped what she sowed.

Seeker

What else would you need to see to prove that the man had done nothing wrong?

seeker · 23/07/2012 09:34

That's now it looks, obviously. But we have no idea what went on before or after. We don't know if it was staged for the camera. I am not going to condemn or exonerate anyone- the woman or the man- on the strength of a 30 second film.

niceguy2 · 23/07/2012 10:03

Given the backstory, I hope he broke her nose. I hope she rots in jail.

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/07/2012 11:27

" But we have no idea what went on before or after."
Well seeker, "samm" on this digiex forum thread claims to have been there and is claiming it was all this man's fault.

Personally, I think samm's posts are a work of fiction, either about being there and/or about what happened. Birdsgottafly (Sun 22-Jul-12 00:36:47) seemed to me to give the more likely scenario.

seeker · 23/07/2012 11:29

That's what I mean by us having no idea what went on before or after......you've just made my case for me.

TheRealMrsHannigan · 23/07/2012 11:45

The poor man in that video didn't look like he had much of a choice, let them kick his head in or retaliate to get away from them. That woman got what she was asking for and I am amazed at his restraint to be honest, I'd have been incensed.

For what it is worth, I have been in a similar situation, I was 24 years old and was attacked by three girls, two 15 years old, one 14. In any other situation I would never lay my hands on a child but I had to fight back against what were essentially children or I would have been mugged and beaten up. I do not regret a single blow that was landed and they did not back off after one punch believe me, I honestly felt like I was fighting for my life, that's how savage they were.

What is shocking is the attack was captured on CCTV, the police were still intending to prosecute ME until one of the girls mothers showed some common sense and told the officers she was GLAD I had fought back as her daughter deserved a 'good hiding' for the way she had behaved.

So from someone who's had a similar experience I say good on him!

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/07/2012 11:48

I disagree seeker. Taking the video purely on its own, ignoring all other comments -

This is a video being made by someone who is heard laughing at what they are filming. They are not helping the man, they are not helping the girl, they are not intervening in any way, except by acting as an audience. (Having an audience is known to embolden some to "act up".) They are filming it and laughing. Why does anyone film anything? Either to show it to others or to watch it again themselves later. Why are they laughing? Because they are enjoying what they are seeing. And several people are laughing, so all of them are standing back, letting the event unfold for their enjoyment. They are being entertained by what is being filmed. They only stop being entertained when the girl is floored, so it can be reasoned that they are "on her side".

If the man had "started it", they would not have been laughing so freely. They would have been hissing encouragement to the girl to take revenge. And it's very doubtful they'd be filming it - they'd be far more likely to be part of the attack. The "audience's" behaviour is what makes it clear that this is something they, as a group, are doing for fun.

Wasn't this thing called "happy slapping" when it first appeared - the filming of an unprovoked attack so that it could be chortled over afterwards? Sickening. Truly sickening.

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/07/2012 12:57

If the man did do something wrong why is it not on the video?
Why are the girls only showing the part that puts them in a bad light?
If the man did something wrong why are the girls laughing at him being beaten up?
If as the link to the other forum states that he attemped to "rape" her girlfriend why aren't they all after him?

But I think the most important thing for this thread is why are some people blaming the victim, if this was the other way round there would be calls for blood.

Dahlen · 23/07/2012 13:04

Dunno what's going on in the video. The whole thing could just be stunt with no victims or aggressors at all. Not everything on the net is real. Wink

As for men hitting back in self defence, I'd say violence is always wrong but when you're in a situation where not using violence is likely to result in serious harm to yourself, then it is your only option. IMO everyone has a moral duty to use only a reasonable degree of force, but in reality it isn't always easy to gauge where that lies, and one hard punch is actually more 'reasonable' (and effective) than several lesser ones.

seeker · 23/07/2012 13:05

I'm not blaming anyone. I'm saying that without a backstory for all we know this video is a fake. Or a set up. Or anything. I am not prepared to exonerate or condemn anyone on the strength of a 14 second video.

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/07/2012 13:21

"Yearn, right, he looked such a sweet defenceless soul , didn't he?"
To me, that did read as if you were assuming that he was in the wrong. Sorry if that's not the way you intended it. How did you intend it, seeker?

DinahMoHum · 23/07/2012 13:57

if anyone hits anyone, they should expect to be hit back.

If i go and hit a 6ft 5 rugby player, id expect to be floored and id deserve it.
having a fanny shouldnt exempt someone from getting what they ask for

peoplesrepublicofmeow · 23/07/2012 15:09

seeker
And I am disconcertd by he readiness of women to condemn other women.

can i assume from this that if it was a man hitting a woman you would also be disconcerted about men's readyness to condemn other men?

GhostShip · 23/07/2012 18:55

Seeker I saw her profile page before it was takn down. It was taken down because she got so much abuse. I'm not going off a YouTube video or comments, I got it straight from the horses mouth.

seeker · 23/07/2012 20:11

Yes- I shouldn't have said that. I was outraged by somebody saying that he should have kicked her teeth in as well. I apologise.

Hownoobrooncoo · 23/07/2012 20:38

If it was a random unprovoked attack for fun then yes He should have kicked her teeth in, I have no problem with that.
