....to want to ban page 3???

DianaVreeland · 20/07/2012 16:07

I remember seeing a page 3 girl for the first time when I was about 6 as my neighbour bought the Sun. I cringed inwardly, and haven't stopped feeling the same since. I have 5 nieces 3 nephews and my own 2 sons.....I hope they could grow up without seeing images of women objectified like this. Clearly I am not showing this to them but at some point I know they will. Does anyone else feel the same?

I think a campaign against Page 3 will

a) give it a well needed boost of publicity ie backfire

b) make Mumsnet seem even more po faced/hysterical/outdated than it already is to those who don't know it

c) not succeed

Mumsnet is fecking brilliant at supporting women and families, campaigning for issues in which it can make a difference (We believe You) and generally boasting intelligent outspoken women whose views make the news.

This is a waste of time.

YANBU

When Object went to the Leveson enquiry their submission had to be CENSORED that's right CENSORED for the court documents when the images had been printed in national newspapers in the first place - bloody farcical.

I've wondered in the past if asking cafes in naicer establishments eg Waitrose etc to ensure that they don't have the Sun in their selection of free newspapers to read might be a good angle to campaign on.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 07/09/2012 18:14

Nothing quite normalises the objectification of women like a topless model on page 3 of the most popular daily paper in the country.

I deeply resent having to share public space with men who are openly ogling tits.

GhostShip · 07/09/2012 18:19

If we're all going to come together and campaign, let's make it something worth while.

Not something that's going to take away people's free will and a lot of women's careers.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2012 18:21

How sad and ignorant, that there are so many who believe men looking at porn is 'normal' and if you don't you must be gay.

The Sun, a trashy newspaper that only chavs buy.

thebeesnees79 · 07/09/2012 18:22

free will and careers? God I never knew I could make a career out of my tits.
seriously there are lad mags etc for that we don't need it in 2012 in a newspaper.
times have moved on or at least I thought they had

expatinscotland · 07/09/2012 18:23

How is taking away women's careers? They're free to be hookers or adult film participants without needing to pose in The Sun.

jimmenycricket · 07/09/2012 18:24

I run past yelling OH MY GOD EVERYONE THAT MAN IS LOOKING AT PORN!

Well it is. Why not name it. Grin

Realise this is not the most adult way of making the point but ho hum.

scottishmummy · 07/09/2012 18:27

you must look like a right bampot then
do they retort piss off, not most adult retort but ho hum
I don't like it but no wouldn't ban it

jimmenycricket · 07/09/2012 18:28

They generally look embarrassed. I only do it if they are ogling page three in a public place. You do see people sitting on park benches drooling. It's gross.

GhostShip · 07/09/2012 18:29

expat so they're prostitutes now are they Confused

jimmeny same can be said for 50shades. That was porn fiction but a lot of women seem aghast when it's suggested.

scottishmummy · 07/09/2012 18:31

no you shouting porn and running that's beyond daft
do you target the old and infirm who can't chase you
I'm laughing now, thought if you skulking to shout PORN and leg it

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 07/09/2012 18:32

Grin wish I had the guts to do that jimmeny.

jimmenycricket · 07/09/2012 18:33

I agree and royally mocked anyone I saw reading it. Interestingly it's led to a major rise in the use of e-readers.

Perhaps I could make some 'porn fan' stickers to pop on readers of such things.

There is a time and a place if you like porn, out in public probably isn't it, as such family newspapers are not the place IMO.

Although let's face it, if you picked up the Beano by mistake you'd probably only notice when you missed the tits on page 3! Grin

Note not you you ScottishMummy, the average reader of the quality press which is the Sun.

scottishmummy · 07/09/2012 18:35

guts to be gobby.nah empty vessels most noise and all that
still I'm sure it's v funny
priceless if they were to retort

missymoomoomee · 07/09/2012 18:35

'hookers or adult film participants' slight difference between having your photo taken and shagging someone for money.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2012 18:35

Well, yeah, selling your body for wank fodder or sex is prostituting yourself.

jimmenycricket · 07/09/2012 18:36

Ah you are funny Scottishmummy. I had forgotten how funny you are.

scottishmummy · 07/09/2012 18:38

are you up in Scotland?
I'd pay you to sit on the 44 and shout PORN to the sunny sun readers
beano to me is Daily Record

spoonsspoonsspoons · 07/09/2012 18:38

I've not read the entire thread, but as an aside, the teenage magazines (think just 17 type magazines) that I read in Germany had a double page spread of a naked teenage boys each issue. Not just showing their bums either. Was very strange, mens bits aren't very aesthetically pleasing, would rather look at boobs to be honest.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2012 18:39

Ah, a Glasgow bus. The no. 62 Drumchapel. Try shouting it on there.

GhostShip · 07/09/2012 18:39

expat ridiculous comment.

Are models prostitutes too? They sell their body image too.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 07/09/2012 18:39

I saw a woman on the tube reading 50 shades the other day (book, not kindle) and there were 3 men reading it over her shoulder. [grim]

expatinscotland · 07/09/2012 18:40

They're selling themselves as wank fodder, Ghost. They are not models, they are strippers.

missymoomoomee · 07/09/2012 18:42

Prostitution is engaging in a sexual act for money, sitting posing for a picture, as far as I am aware, is not a sexual act. What someone chooses to do with that photo afterwards might be, but then the same could be said for any picture. Some guys have foot fetishes does that mean that a foot model is also a prostitute, as some guy may have a wank over her picture?
