....to want to ban page 3???

I remember seeing a page 3 girl for the first time when I was about 6 as my neighbour bought the Sun. I cringed inwardly, and haven't stopped feeling the same since. I have 5 nieces 3 nephews and my own 2 sons.....I hope they could grow up without seeing images of women objectified like this. Clearly I am not showing this to them but at some point I know they will. Does anyone else feel the same?

YADNBU.

To those who think it does no harm, these images harmed ME as a young girl. I developed various eating disorders in an attempt to conform. Never mind men objectifying women, I objectified myself. It depressed me that, despite starving myself, I didn't then follow the contradictory and generally impossible deal (thin with boobs). Madness.

missymoomoomee · 07/09/2012 17:30

Why only call for page 3 to be banned then? Why not all the 'mens mags'? in fact why not porn altogether?.

Its not just the paper that makes money from this, its the girls too, if they are happy to be photographed in such a way then who are you to object? They are obviously happy with it and lots have made a good career out of it too.

I also think you are being very sexist in the way you are saying its down to men objectifying women too, where do you stand on the women who like these pictures (of which there are plenty)?

emcwill74 · 07/09/2012 17:39

missymoomoomee: Personally I would be happy for men's mags to go this way too but I feel more angsty about Page 3 because it is so normalised by being in a NEWSpaper. As for all porn, that's difficult. I think there are bad things about porn but it is a much trickier issue. Right now I am not personally calling for a ban on that because at least it is on the top shelf and generally read in private, not on public transport etc, in front of kids etc. PLus I think an all-porn ban is unrealistic frankly. Though my husband would support it.

If you read all the comments made today there are an awful lot that explain why people on here think it is more important that it go than the models are allowed to do it. But the main thing I keep repeating is that the Sun is not the only place these models can get their tits out. People lose contracts all the time! They get others! One poster reports from insider knowledge it's not well paid anyway!

As I have also said, if women like these pics (and sure, some do, they are clearly mainly to appeal to men though) they can simply view them elsewhere.

hightrees · 07/09/2012 17:39

Missy - hmm. Are you in the industry? Or a man? I can't see how another woman would really defend it otherwise.

The girls might (?) be happy, but as a young girl, these images made me very unhappy since I unfavourably compared myself to them. Who knows if they had other great attributes. It didn't matter - all that mattered was their perky (big) boobs and flat stomachs.

BTW, as for porn in general: isn't there some stat about a high number of women in porn having been sexually abused in childhood. By no means all women in porn, but a high number.

However, I'd need to check the stats - just like you need to link us to a report that demonstrates a high number of women enjoy the pics in the sun.

LET HUBS LOOK AT TITS AND HE WON'T STRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A tit a day
Keeps straying away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saltycopporn · 07/09/2012 17:48

I can show you a report if you would like. A couple of pages back there was a breakdown the sun reader demographic. 41% are women. Woman who may not like page 3 but also don't dislike it enough to move their hand one foot to the left or right and buy a different paper.

I think women involved in fashion modelling do more to damage self esteem than page 3? Maybe ban vogue while you're on a roll?

GhostShip · 07/09/2012 17:48

This again? Why has this been revived?

Don't like it, don't look.

GhostShip · 07/09/2012 17:49

And hightrees I'm sorry that happened to you, but in that case shall we ban all models then?

Wiggy29 · 07/09/2012 17:51

Urgh, they totally make me uncomfortable. Yet OFCOM (think that's the TV one) get complaints if they show full frontal male nudity after the watershed, whereas tits, why let's cop a look at them bad boys over breakfast!

Cringe.

As others have touched upon, it's really a tragic motif of 'equality' and women being valued beyond simply an object of the gaze.

morethanpotatoprints · 07/09/2012 17:52

I also defend it and believe me I am all woman. If some men want to look at these and other women and the women are posing of their free will there clearly is no harm done. Just because you don't like it doesn't give you a right to Police what others deem as acceptable. If you don't like it don't buy it and if you don't want your men to look at it and even be turned on by this stuff, then don't be surprised if they go elsewhere.
I wouldn't want my daughter to pose when she is older, but if she really wanted to there would be nothing I could do to stop her. I will educate her as to why women pose for pictures like this as I educated my ds's, I can't stop them looking neither.
If you lack confidence and compare yourself to these images it is not the fault of the images. They exist in all forms in all sorts of magazines, everyone knows they are air brushed the same as fully clothed models faces are. Do we ban these because somebody may look less than the perfectly air brushed model. I can't believe this thread, how ludicrous.

Hullygully · 07/09/2012 17:55

Mind you Potato, your theory hasn't worked so far, has it?

Tits everywhere, wank mags galore and yet still there is rape and adultery!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do we need EVEN MORE TITS?

How many might work?

Wiggy29 · 07/09/2012 17:56

' if you don't want your men to look at it and even be turned on by this stuff, then don't be surprised if they go elsewhere.'

Seriously? If I don't let dp oggle these images he'l' go off with somebody else? Is there a cave somewhere getting cold? These opinions seem prehistoric to me.

DP finds images degrading to women and neither of us can see there place in a 'news' paper.

or even Grin

GhostShip · 07/09/2012 17:57

I find it HILARIOUS that some of the people on this thread have serious double standards. Maybe some of you should bear in mind what you've posted in other topics regarding men...

And this got touched upon earlier in the thread, but we do have male versions of page 3 yano! That is enjoyed by many women.

Wiggy29 · 07/09/2012 17:57

ARGH 'their' place in a newspaper. Been a long week!

missymoomoomee · 07/09/2012 18:01

I am a married mother of 4, including 3 daughters. My oldest daughter has seen a page 3 model in the Sun and asked questions, I used the oppourtunity to have a full and frank discussion with her. Last parents evening the teacher congratlatled me on her attitude, my daughter had an argument with another girl that day, this girl called her fat, my daughter (aged 7 then) said 'If thats what you think I don't care I'm also funny and a great reader and you are rude'. So I'm sorry high I really don't think you can blame your eating disorder solely on these images.

I am defending it because really it does no harm whatsoever. You can't censor everything and I hate this culture we are in of people calling for everything to be banned because a few people don't like it, its ridiculous.

As for encouraging people to go to 'other places' to see girls with their tits out, as I said before that is just going to go online which will lead to more explicit images, if a young lad is curious to see a pair of boobs I would much rather he go and buy the Sun than venture online.

morethanpotatoprints · 07/09/2012 18:01

Hightrees.

My apologies to you for my last post. It is such a shame that like yourself girls were harmed by these images. I do know now though that young girls are educated about these images not being real and being air brushed. my dd 8 learned this at school in PHSE, obviously not about the nude images.

thebeesnees79 · 07/09/2012 18:02

page three is disgusting and neanderthal like.
Its ok for lads mags etc but in a news paper its grim and outdated. Yaddnbu it needs to go, although I can't see that happening. There is nothing else decent in that news paper to get people to buy it (limited brain cell capacity I think)

AllHailTheOlympiansMumsnet · 07/09/2012 18:05

AHEM

morethanpotatoprints · 07/09/2012 18:05

Wiggy.

No cave getting cold. Are you sure your dh really thinks like this, its not really normal is it? Maybe he has a femine side or wishes to keep you sweet, lol.

Saltycopporn · 07/09/2012 18:06

Try a bit harder to convince me! I'm open to being converted but in all honesty mentioning page 3 in the same post as films of eastern European children being abused may not help

thebeesnees79 · 07/09/2012 18:10

salty its disgusting! he is clearly an idiot
