....to want to ban page 3???

I remember seeing a page 3 girl for the first time when I was about 6 as my neighbour bought the Sun. I cringed inwardly, and haven't stopped feeling the same since. I have 5 nieces 3 nephews and my own 2 sons.....I hope they could grow up without seeing images of women objectified like this. Clearly I am not showing this to them but at some point I know they will. Does anyone else feel the same?

I can honestly say it does not bother me in the slightest.

It is a pair of boobs... there is nothing really seedy or even to most people, shocking, about seeing a pair of them.

Some people find them appealing to look at, most others dont even notice them if they read the Sun.

The women get paid for appearing in there and every Page 3 girl that I have known (which is a few since the 80's) has been proud of achieving that status and wanted to do it as it usually leads to more work and more money.

The Daily Mail does not have "page 3", but they have photos of celebrities every day, and comments are made by the reporters about the fact that they are "piling on the pounds" or their "curves are spilling out of their dress". Many of those celebrities are paid for their acting/singing/whatever skills, not modelling, and are going about their daily business when photographed, or are being zoomed in on as they lie on a beach on holiday, not posing by choice to be topless in the paper, and THAT is something that annoys me, as they are entitled to their privacy and not be judged on their figures by millions of readers.

FrancesFarmer · 20/07/2012 16:48

It's really weird.

DianaVreeland · 20/07/2012 16:48

You never see ,Mike, balding, said blah, blah.

True, men are always recognised for their achievements not for physical appearance.

I assume they started doing it to boost sales but surely it alienates more people than it pleases?

squeakytoy · 20/07/2012 16:52

I doubt it Frances, it is still the best selling UK daily newspaper as far as sales figures go.

TooMuchRain · 20/07/2012 16:52

YANBU - it's creepy

yellowraincoat · 20/07/2012 16:54

It obviously doesn't alienate people or they would take it out.

I'm not really sure about banning stuff. Free speech, free press and all that.

I do find it pretty fucking degrading though. Especially the "yellowraincoat, 21, says "I think the fiscal policy of the EU really needs to be looked at in greater detail if we want to escape this crisis." Basically they put those fake quotes in to laugh at the girls, oh ha ha ha, she obviously didn't say this because she is just a stupid woman who gets her knockers out for the paper.

DianaVreeland · 20/07/2012 16:54

You never see ,Mike, balding, said blah, blah.

I appreciate the girls get paid for it, but many do it for free to progress their career. What disturbs me that many girls think this is their only option to make good money.
I listened to the radio yesterday about a head teacher in Billericay who introduced her secondary school pupils to female solicitors, entrepreneurs, business women as the girls couldn't name any role models outside of Kim Kardashian and Jordan.

I know squeaky but I don't get it. I wouldn't let it into my house.

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2012 16:57

Banning page 3 won't stop young girls choosing glamorous role models over solicitors, entrepreneurs and business women.

I loathe them too! Can we start a mn campaign against them? Imagine the headline.

"MN mafia want to spoil our Page 3 fun!" Yeah let's do it! I don't want my dd growing up to think it is OK to flash your boobs in a newspaper

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 17:01

I don't the fact that people are prepared to do things for money makes those things all right.

DianaVreeland · 20/07/2012 17:02

Maybe we should suggest MN starts a campaign..

Can i add to this debate the bloody degrading parade of a half naked women holding up a cardboard number at the end of each round of a boxing match.

I mean good god - have we not progressed beyond this yet?

FrancesFarmer · 20/07/2012 17:06

What bothers me about it is that it brings the private sexual sphere into the public/family sphere.

Children, look not at page 3 of the newspaper for it contains father's wanking material. Hmm

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 17:07

aiton · 20/07/2012 17:09

YABU freedom of the press is vital. If you don't like it (as I don't) then don't buy The Sun

FrancesFarmer · 20/07/2012 17:10

I the press is that free, how come we never see photos of impressively endowed men?

fluffyraggies · 20/07/2012 17:12

Exactly frances.

Why not the page 4 penis?

yousankmybattleship · 20/07/2012 17:12

YABU. If you don't like it then don't look at it. The press should be free to publish it. It is not pornographic and if girls want to earn a few pounds posing and men want to waste a few seconds learing, what's the harm? There are equally tacky pictures of buff blokes in their undies so I don't think the argument about objectifying just women holds up.

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 17:13

The press isn't free. There are all sorts of rules and regulations (written and unwritten) covering huge numbers of issues.

It just so happens that tits are allowed and all the attendant wanking creepiness that goes with it.

DianaVreeland · 20/07/2012 17:14

YABU freedom of the press is vital. If you don't like it (as I don't) then don't buy The Sun

But what about our freedom not to be seen purely as boobs and bumps? As the sum of so many body parts? Freedom of the press should be to report NEWS without censorship of the NEWS not show soft porn shots of young girls?

OP posts:
DianaVreeland · 20/07/2012 17:16

I don't like the so called page 7 hunk either, it really doesn't even things out.

OP posts:
FrancesFarmer · 20/07/2012 17:16

I would argue that it is pornographic - what function do those photos have if not to titillate?
