To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

While I can appreciate that they have a lot of meaning for people, I do think they look awful.

I saw a gorgeous looking bride the other day - lovely dress, hair etc but (in my eyes) the look was completely ruined by the ugly tattoo on her arm.

MikeUniformMike · 23/08/2017 22:47

I saw someone in a vest top with a tattoo that was
firstname surname
DoB - DoD
RIP

It looked like a gravestone

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 23/08/2017 22:48

Aww I'm gutted it's a zombie, was looking forward to sharing a picture of my new tattoo done today Grin

It doesn't bother me if people think I look cheap and tacky. I love my tattoos :)

BakewellSliceAgain · 23/08/2017 22:48

They are here to stay so monolingual getting irritated.

But I still hope my kids don't get them!

DorisDangleberry · 23/08/2017 22:50

So sad this is a zombie thread. cuntflapwankbadger on page 1 has a great username. Probably now deceased due to excessive mustelidae manipulation.

PickAChew · 23/08/2017 22:50

I wonder how many people who got a tat done at the time this thread was started are already regretting it, 5 years on :o

BakewellSliceAgain · 23/08/2017 22:50

Ah, zombie.

The subject is of more interest now I have a child who is old enough to get one!

BakewellSliceAgain · 23/08/2017 22:53

Monolingual ?!

Autocorrect for "no point"

Autocorrect is far more irritating than other people's tattoos!

CurlsandCurves · 23/08/2017 22:54

A couple of years ago DH and I went away to a very posh child free Caribbean resort for a significant birthday.

There was a lady there, sunbathing, minding her own business, and she had a large tattoo down her back.

Another person on this resort decided having such a tattoo she clearly shouldn't be there. Got talking to her, and actually went so far as to ask her what she did for a living because her tattoos were inappropriate for a resort such as this, she shouldn't be here, how on earth could she afford to come here.

To paraphrase this lady reponded 'I work in social services. I help young people build their self esteem and confidence when it has been knocked by people like you!'

CurlsandCurves · 23/08/2017 22:55

And yes, I too have a tattoo that I not so much regret, as choose to ignore!

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/08/2017 22:56

I have tatoos. The classic "rose on the shoulder" from when I was 18 and had no imagination and a dragon on my left boob from when I was 19 and a fucking idiot.

I am planning another one but it is to hide a scar and will be very very subtle. It is the Summoning Dark (those in the know will know!) done in just off skin tone.

I hate feet tattos. No idea why they piss me off but they really do! There is barely a foot in the school playground that isnt adorned with three fucking stars.

There was a line in Phineas and Ferb where Candice wanted to do something, I forget what, and she said "It will express my individuality, everyone is doing it!" and that kind of sums up how I see certain types of tatoos (including mine!). I expressed my individuality by doing exactly the same as all my friends Hmm :o

WelshMoth · 23/08/2017 22:57

I rather like the art work on some but not keen on them in general.

That said, I have a small symbol somewhere unseen (foot area) that my brother constantly doodled when he was alive. I was drunk, took his doodle to a parlour, and had it copied. I neither like it nor dislike it; it's merely a part of me (been there nearly 25 years), like my eyes or my
Birthmark, or like the scars on my knees.

I saw a gorgeous, tanned lady last year ago with what looked like a tan coloured tattoo on her tanned and toned arm. Striking, must be said.

RightOnTheEdge · 23/08/2017 23:02

Got half way through before I realised it was a zombie. I got all excited seeing all the old user names I'd missed!

Circumlocutor · 23/08/2017 23:02

I know it's a zombie thread and all but I do think tattoo sleeves and tattooed necks and chests, are starting to look a bit dated. And as for names and dates, nah that's just shockingly unimaginative.

But the worst thing about tattoos is when people try to tell you the 'story' behind them. NO, do not bore me with that nonsense thank you. I do not care that your lion tattoo signifies your strength.

winewolfhowls · 23/08/2017 23:08

Oh I like a tattoo story, particularly the one above about the brother's doodle. That's lovely.

oddleofnoodle · 23/08/2017 23:27

Any and every tattoo is tacky.

photographyaddict · 23/08/2017 23:36

I love my tattoos, if you judge me on them then it's your loss. Pathetic people.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 23/08/2017 23:53

Pyongyang that sounds like it's going to be awesome. Just my level of geekery.

GNUTerryPratchett

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/08/2017 00:40

Thanks Incy

I have a scar 2 inches above my wrist where I self harmed some years ago, its a cigarette burn and I hate seeing it so I thought that the Summoning Dark would be a good choice as it is circular so it will surround the scar and make it look as it if it part of the tatoo iykwim. It also means something personal as it left Vimes because he beat it, which feels resonant with the fight I had within myself.

GNU

CruCru · 24/08/2017 01:31

Well that's irritating. I was going to comment then realised that I already had - five years ago.

CruCru · 24/08/2017 01:35

I think the problem with tattoos is that people are likely to get them when they are young and relatively poor. Skin is too precious to waste on a bad, cheap tattoo.

It's also too easy to not realise how influenced you are by the current fashion. A bit like baby names. It would be a real bugger to get a swan tattoo (because it is something that is really personal to you) and then find that every other sod had had the same idea.

It's a pity that the ONS doesn't publish a list of tattoo designs.

Sorry - getting silly. I can't sleep for some reason.

BonjourMeDarlin · 24/08/2017 07:07

@Royston2017 the doctor who did my csection for me had a full sleeve tattoo and my lawyer had a tattoo on his arm.
On my law course many of the students have tattoos - one of the girls on her neck and hands, they will go on to be in professional careers.

surferjet · 24/08/2017 07:14

Tattoos. = ok on some men.
Revoltingly common/tacky/ awful on vast majority of women.
Just my opinion.

OliviaStabler · 24/08/2017 07:21

I can't get worked up about other people's tattoos. I don't like them but if others want to present themselves to the world like that, that is entirely their choice.

dustarr73 · 24/08/2017 08:03

Ovaries you know the rule.Show us the new tattoo.
I have a tattoos and they dont bother me on other people. The only thing i will say is people getting hands and neck tattoos first.Just look stupid.

I seen someone wtht their neck and hands done, lovely tattoos but then took off their jacket and they had no other tattoos. It just looked not well thought out.
