To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

Each to their own.
I find them rather distasteful and ugly, but then people don't get them for my benefit. I don't get emotional about it. That said, would rather my kids don;t get them, but suspect they will.

MaryShelley1818 · 24/08/2017 08:52

I have 3 tattoos and absolutely adore them. All very significant and important to me and represent major milestones in my life including one bereavement.
I don't care if people don't like them as we all have different personal taste but if someone actually judges someone on them or makes a decision about them as a person based solely on their tattoos I don't think that's very intelligent tbh and also not a very nice trait.

WashBasketsAreUs · 24/08/2017 08:57

Genuine questions here for tattooed outsole. If you have coloured ones, did the colours fade a lot/ quickly?

My favourite programme is tattoo fixers, I am in awe of the amazing artistry that the tattoo artists display, especially as I can't draw a straight line! However why is the cover up they do generally about 5 times bigger than the tattoo they are covering?
I'm ambivalent about tattoos, haven't got any and don't want any but I admire the really artistic ones. But I don't like them and wouldn't have one.

WiganPierre · 24/08/2017 08:57

I loathe tattoos. They really do age you. The ones on the hands and wrists are going to look like formless blobs in a few years.

WashBasketsAreUs · 24/08/2017 08:58

People not outsole!!! That's not even a word!

But the whole point of tattoos, piercings, hair styles, clothes, - basically anything that other people can see - is to present an image of ourselves to the outside world. These things define who we are & our personality. Its ridiculous to cover yourselves in tattoos & not expect other people to notice, Grin & when they do notice they will make a very quick, fleeting judgment of you.

MaryShelley1818 · 24/08/2017 09:20

The point of my tattoos I made clear in my post. It was not to present an image to the outside world at all. As I said I'm fine with people not liking them, that's personal taste, but as a reasonably intelligent person I'm aware that you can't judge a person's entire character based solely on one small aspect of their appearance.
Also I didn't say whether my tattoos are visible.

DownstairsMixUp · 24/08/2017 09:23

To the poster asking about colour, mine have stayed brilliant! There's some red fading a tad on the top of my arm to a lighter red but it's not noticeable, all mine are years old now. You get what you pay for and I paid a fair bit.

I don't care if people have them or not but I do hate people who look down on people with them. I'm a nurse, a professional, one day I could be involved in a team saving these people's lives, the world would be so much better if we could all just accept we have different likes and dislikes

dustarr73 · 24/08/2017 09:30

I love my tatts, couldn't give a fig whether anyone else does or not.
The thing is if you judge me just because I have tattoos, that says more about you.

Nor every tattoo has a meaning. They don't all have deep and meaningfuleanings.
Some I just liked the look of.

And I don't regret any of mine, sure some I don't love as much as I used to.And it's not a fad for me, my first tattoo at 17 till my last one( for Now) at 43.

And lastly Tattoo Fixers , sometimes they have to go much bigger because of the place of the original tattoo.Or because or the colours used originally.Or the client wants a bigger piece.

Tattoos look great as part of a certain look or identity (biker, heavy metal fan) - I've seen some gorgeous ones. But the ones you mention? No.

Lauralou69 · 24/08/2017 09:41

Yes, but then I'm generally annoyed by any sheep, following the latest trend type if behaviour that many humans follow.........but it will provide amusement factor when they are all old and saggy in the old folks home 😂😂

RudeDog · 24/08/2017 09:52

I always tell me friend (who has 2 tiny tattoos) that was I was disappointed she didn't start getting her kids names/DOB with the first - as it would have been funny when she ran out of space with child no. 7

I still know people who have appointments for tattoo places with no plan what they are going to have - they just pick something out - I find it very odd to get something permanent like that on a whim....

DadOnIce · 24/08/2017 09:58

I wonder if the woman who had all of Westlife tattooed on her had to have Brian removed when he left. That's always the problem with a band. It's a good job she wasn't a big fan of the Treorchy Male Voice Choir or So Solid Crew.

TwatteryFlowers · 24/08/2017 10:42

Tattoos don't have to look shit as you age at all, as these examples show www.boredpanda.com/tattooed-elderly-people/

Neutrogena · 24/08/2017 10:46

@TwatteryFlowers

Those are old people with new tattoos.

Let's see some pictures of a tattoo that was done 25 years ago. My guess is that they will look like a horrid black smear, an inky skidmark desecrating ones body.

BastardGoDarkly · 24/08/2017 10:55

I only realised this was a zombie when I saw dear old Bupcakes .

MN was much funnier back then.

I disagree with you. My dad has two tattoos, one on each forearm. One is a dagger and the other is a flower. Yes they show his age - he had them done in his late teens/early twenties and was influenced by the fashion of the time; but they're a part of him and his history. They don't appear to have faded at all and are still sharp, bright and colorful. As with anything, if you look after it, it will stand the test of time; if not, it won't.

AlpacaLypse · 24/08/2017 11:20

Thanks whoever revived this zombie, lovely to see some old users who seem to have stopped posting or namechanged in the past five years!

Interesting to see the subtle change in attitudes to tattoos in the gap. They are definitely more widespread amongst the professional classes these days. However the dislike of generic unimaginative tattoos has increased.

Balletmummy25 · 24/08/2017 11:22

Haha oh god I have 3 stars and a child's name tattoo with date of birth 😂😂

Didn't really know they were tacky haha

dustarr73 · 24/08/2017 11:28

Ballet theres a lot of snobbery surrounding tattoos. And sometimes i find the worst ones are people who have tattoos. But because you got something they dont like, its tacky.

As long as you like it,who cares.

CuppaSarah · 24/08/2017 11:33

I don't mind tattoos at all, I do think some people get them without thinking the commitment through quite a bit these days. But whatever, it's not my skin.

They're not for me, I'm too fickle. But then tattoos becoming fashionable has allowed the tattoo correction and removal business to flourish Grin

breakabletoy · 24/08/2017 13:22

I have nothing against tattoos in theory, but I hate how precious people are about them.

I worked with a hipsterish guy who had a tattoo on the side of his neck. It was a combination of a word and an image that was a bit strange, so people often asked about it. He'd ALWAYS get really huffy and offended by people's curiosity, because, according to him, the tattoo signified something very personal and private and he didn't want to explain it to everyone.

So why get it tattooed in such a visible place, then?

If you get a visible tattoo, you have to be prepared that people will notice it, they may ask you about it, and they may also dislike it, in the same way someone might dislike your choice of clothes or haircut. You have every right to personal expression, but others also have the right to react to your expression.

Just seen this thread was started 5 years ago, why do people revive ancient threads? Confused
