To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

I love tattoos and I am heavily tattooed but I am a tattoo snob. I collect well thought out pieces from artists I really liked and admire, I've waited months for some of them due to the artists waiting list being so long. I am also part of the rock/metal community so tattoos are very much part of our sub culture.

Unfortunately there are some terrible "artists out there doing sub standard work that puts those of us who take their artwork seriously to shame. I don't do tattoos for fashion as they quickly date, you just know the current Mandala trend is going to be the future equivalent to all that dodgy tribal.

Personally I don't think you're being unreasonable to judge someone with a crap tattoo as it shows a lack of originality as well as poor taste and lack of tattooing knowledge. If you're going to mark your body forever it should be with something that is well done and executed.

aintnothinbutagstring · 23/08/2017 19:44

Never seen a good tattoo, they're all naff and make you look common (takes one to know one, I am pretty common!).

MrsCharlieD · 23/08/2017 19:44

Hah I hate when I get caught put by a zombie!!!!

Kim82 · 23/08/2017 19:48

I've just had a tattoo done today. A wild flower on my wrist in memory of my dad who passed away in July (he loved wild flowers). I love it, it means a lot to me and couldn't care less if others don't like it. I didn't have it done for them.

user997799779977 · 23/08/2017 19:55

Most tattoos I've seen in Britain are fucking ugly and look cheap as fuck. The only nice ones are some Japanese art tattoo. If you want to get it dont get cheap ones. Else you look like you have a permanent primark tattoo.

TwatteryFlowers · 23/08/2017 20:01

kids' names and/or dates ooops, I'm one of those chavtastic, tacky parents. I'll grab a big plaster on my way home and cover it up and arrange a removal or cover-up asap. Never mind that I like it and that I designed it. Your opinion of me matters more!

TwatteryFlowers · 23/08/2017 20:05

Oh fuck, it's a zombie thread! I should have read this back then and I wouldn't have bothered in the first place - this was posted about a month before I had my tattoo done! For the record, it was done in Britain, cost about £25 'cos it's only small and looks lovely. Nothing like a scrawl made with a Sharpie marker!

LuLuuuuuuu · 23/08/2017 20:16

It isnt as if you are likely to forget your child's name or birthday.. is it?

My DSs father did , The fool had tattoos of their name, starsign and DOB, only he got the DOB totally wrong for both of his DSs

sizeofalentil · 23/08/2017 20:21

Why do you care so much about what other people look like?

seekingmumfriends · 23/08/2017 21:07

Lots of snobs on here! I have doggy pawprint tattoo's on my stomach, to remind me of my lovely staffie who was sadly rehomed in June last year, My sister has very tasteful name tattoo's for all of my lovely nephews and neices and they're not tacky at all!

Binkybix · 23/08/2017 22:00

A white tatto on black skin would look quite striking though

I think you can get white ink. I'm sure my friend had one.

Oops. Zombie.

Bluelonerose · 23/08/2017 22:12

I'm covered in tattoos. Apart from the one at the Base of my spine (and the gardener mowing the grass on my foof) all my others have a story as to a place I was in my life when I got them. Yes I have my kids names on my back piece (no dates 😉) and I agree that some tattoos if not done by are artist can just look tacky.
Worth putting in the time and research into your artist so you get top quality

PollyFlint · 23/08/2017 22:14

Don't worry, the people whose tattoos you're judging probably think you look a right state as well, so you're even.

PollyFlint · 23/08/2017 22:15

Oh, zombie thread. Hopefully the OP's grown up now.

isawahatonce · 23/08/2017 22:20

I'm not a tattoo person myself but I honestly don't see what's wrong with this? They love their children, they like tattoos, they want to get tattoos to honour their children. I think it's sweet.
It's not like it's a swastika

mamatiger83 · 23/08/2017 22:33

My dh has both arms 3/4 sleeves and a leg piece, his tattoos are absolutely beautiful, he has spent many hours and a great deal of money (eye watering amount) and most importantly he loves them :)

MikeUniformMike · 23/08/2017 22:35

It's a good idea to have your children's names and DoB tattooed on your arms cos it would be sad if you forgot their names and birthdays.

BonnieF · 23/08/2017 22:37

I'm not a fan of tattoos and I would never have one, but I try very hard not to be judgemental of those who do.

Even the ones with obvious spelling mistakes.....

WorknameJimEllis · 23/08/2017 22:39

My tattooist refuses to do names or dates

She says it isn't her fucking problem if you don't know when your own kid was born. Or what you called it. Grin

TeaCake5 · 23/08/2017 22:42

Tattoos are common. Yanbu.

Snausage · 23/08/2017 22:42

I always worry a little about name/DOB tattoos when they're on display on social media. Once something is up on the internet Facebook it's there FOREVER (unless you're Max Mosley). In a few years these kids will probably find Littlewoods credit and bank accounts opened in their names and shit.

LetZygonsbeZygones · 23/08/2017 22:44

Names and dates might be useful.in the future and have dementia. Would be even more so if you added extra clues sucj "my oldest daughter" it "my youngest son" after the names though.

LetZygonsbeZygones · 23/08/2017 22:45

Excuse typos. That's why I can't have tattoos. - too careless.
