My very large size 18 ish friend had a strapless dress, she looked amazing in it.
She is not normally a woman you would look twice at, but it fitted her perfectly and she looked brilliant.

YouOldSlag · 15/07/2012 10:31

I agree all that glitters. I don't like them and all brides look so similar. Non strapless bridal gowns are like bloody hens teeth.

It's interesting that in countries such as Italy and France, strapless gowns are thought of as too revealing for a wedding day.

I could never tell anyone this in real life and I am sure people will laugh at me, but I always thought Fergie's dress was lovely! I was only 15 at the time, so maybe I had more princessy taste back then.

GlassofRose · 15/07/2012 10:34

Funny thread, I agree. Not an attractive shape dress for a majority.

Stateofplay · 15/07/2012 11:18

As I wrote upthread, strapless wedding are cheaper to manufacture, to fit and have bigger profit margins for shops than wedding dresses with straps and sleeves which are a more complex design.

I've been told that by a wedding dress designer. Most uk high street wedding dresses are made in China and it's far more profitable to churn out strapless versions. It's very depressing for such a special item which is usually the most expensive piece of clothing a woman buys in her lifetime!

My answer is to fight back, boycott the high street and most populist wedding dress shops and seek out dress makers, spending your money on British talent and supporting small woman-led businesses instead.

WerthersUnOriginal · 15/07/2012 11:21

Maybe there's room in the market for a line in 'wedding cardis' for those that wanted sleeves but couldn't find any Grin

igggi · 15/07/2012 11:23

Gomd allthatglitters I hope you aren't invited to many weddings if you sit thinking such uncharitable thoughts during them.

My experience is that most larger brides use jackets/shrugs/wraps as they are worried about looking crap themselves. Hope no brides-to-be are reading this as they will realise how judgemental their guests will actually be!

GlassofRose · 15/07/2012 11:25

igggi - Most people are judgemental. I don't think many people turn up at weddings with nothing but lovely thoughts. Somebodies always singing 'here comes the bride all fat and wide' in their head, someones always singing 'why are we waiting'. Pretty sure everybody is wondering when speeches are going to end.

This thread was probably only semi serious Smile

Im a size 10-ish with big boobs and could never wear a strapless dress; i'd look like a balcony. Having said that, I wore a boned top with puffy sleeve-type puffs that keep falling off my shoulders. (was 20 years ago,....!)

Not so much cat and pigeons as lake of petrol and flaming torch!

peggyblackett · 15/07/2012 11:27

I had a strapless wedding dress and loved it. Being 5'11" and slim helped though Wink stealth boast

ZillionChocolate · 15/07/2012 11:30

MWB22 John Lewis have some Ghost ones on their website that are dyed to order. They look pretty.

igggi · 15/07/2012 11:34

Glassofrose I certainly accept that some people at a wedding (usually ones who didn't want to come!) may feel like that but I don't accept that the majority are thinking that way - if you close guests from people who care about you, surely your happiness should be the main thing they notice?

I've been married for some time but the thread is still enough to get me thinking that people were laughing at me rather than enjoying the day I worked hard to make enjoyable for them!

Tillyscoutsmum · 15/07/2012 11:38

I wore strapless (pics on profile). I didn't want strapless but the choice was very limited ( no time to get anything made). In hindsight, my back does look a bit fat on some of the pics. I did have a shrug thing on for most of them though.

GlassofRose · 15/07/2012 11:44

Igggi -

I don't know, I've never met a man who willingly attends and enjoys weddings. Never met a woman who doesn't make a comment - positive or negative about the dress...

mumblechum1 · 15/07/2012 11:48

tillyscoutsmum you looked fab in your wedding dress Smile

HeadfirstForRomance · 15/07/2012 12:20

Back fat isn't as ugly as your attitude OP.

Tillyscoutsmum · 15/07/2012 12:26

StuffIt - I'm sure your dress looks fantastic and not everyone is a shallow and judgmental Grin. Mine was a Maggie as well. I may have had back fat but my stomach has never looked flatter Wink

Thanks for compliments Blush

GlassofRose · 15/07/2012 12:27

Stuffit - As long as your happy it's all that matters.

I think if it´s what the bride wants to wear-fine!

But I wonder if some wear a strapless because they can´t find anything else/no one tells them that it doesn´t look all that good.

GlassofRose · 15/07/2012 12:30

Stuffit -

Haha :) Hope you enjoy yourself in your dress. Of course I shall report back, there may even be another AIBU Grin

peggyblackett · 15/07/2012 12:32

tillyscout, your dress is amazing - you look stunning in it :)
