to think it very weird that my collegue doesn't eat anything during the day?

I share an office with my collegue and have been for nearly a year now. I have never seen him eat anything, apart from a piece of cake once when my boss gave it to him cos it was her birthday, so not be rude I think.

I find it baffling that he can go through the whole day without lunch. I've asked him and he says he doesn't feel hungry if he is busy at work. But however busy I am I always get hungry every 2/3hours or so at work.

I've offered him a biscuit on occassion and he always says no. I eat my breakfast at my desk too, plus a morning snack and an afternoon snack, plus lunch too (which I might eat elsewhere sometimes), so I feel like I am always eating! Now my BMI is about 19, so it's not a problem anyway.
My collegue is overweight I'd say (not fat), so the calories must come from somewhere and they certainly don't come from 9-5pm during the day!

He even says if he gets in late from work (he has a very long commute, 2hrs each way) he is too tired to eat dinner Shock

AIBU to be really puzzled by this?

I very rarely eat during the day, perhaps once every couple of months, and always feel yuck afterwards.
Mainly I eat my evening meal and that's it.

choceyes · 11/07/2012 11:21

wow NettoSuperstar See I just can't understand it. Don't you get hungry during the day?
Now I am thinking perhaps I eat too much Hmm

I'd love to be like this however I'm more the other extreme, I eat most of the day...I wish I could blame the pregnancy but I've always been greedy Blush

ImperialBlether · 11/07/2012 11:22

Maybe all his calories are taken in the evening, which is why he's put on weight.

Maybe he eats when you're not looking.

geegee888 · 11/07/2012 11:22

Its one of the great mysteries of life. Perhaps he is a secret eater? Or perhaps he just doesn't use up much energy and his body has become very efficient at running on a low amount of calories?

It is puzzling sometimes, but its not the sort of thing you can say anything about without looking bad. I went on holiday once with an overweight friend, who ate less than half of what I did, and certainly not all the cakes and so on, but in truth I did far more activity than she did and when I'm not on holiday I'm strict about what I eat. But to outside observers it may have looked different for that one week!

ImperialBlether · 11/07/2012 11:23

Netto, sorry to be personal but in the light of what's being said here, are you underweight, normal weight or overweight?

How much would you eat in the evening?

choceyes · 11/07/2012 11:24

yay you're like me MrsHelsBels74!! I usually eat a lot, but when I was pregnant, due to the nausea, only eating made it better, so I was eating almost non-stop.
Even when I was younger my friends used to comment that I was laways munching on something.

purits · 11/07/2012 11:25

I can go all day without eating.
Lunch is for wimps!Grin

MrGin · 11/07/2012 11:25

I never eat anything in the evenings, often a v light breakfast too. Just a decent lunch.

Your body gets used to it. Makes life simpler :)

Or maybe your colleague is..... a robot !

TeriyakiWoo · 11/07/2012 11:27

Perhaps he eats a lot at the weekend to make up for not eating much during the week.

randomfennel · 11/07/2012 11:27

my dp rarely eats breakfast or lunch, on a work day. He comes home and eats lots of cheese sandwiches, then dinner, then more cheese sandwiches, crisp, bombay mix, lots of carbs. He is tall and slim. It seems bizarre to me but he just follows his appetite and I suppose it works for him.

choceyes · 11/07/2012 11:28

ImperialBlether - I am pretty certain he doesn't eat when I'm not looking. When we are not in the office we are in a lab full of chemicals, and you can't eat in there. And he is always in one or the other.

Other collegues make him cups of tea sometimes, and he never drinks them either.

I bet he eats on the train, on his long commute. He can't be bringing in breakfast from home because, he doesn't carry a bag, so no empty containers or anything. Pretty expensive and unhealthy to be buying out breakfast everyday of the week I'd have thought.

I never ate in the day when I worked at the office, lived on diet coke though. Dh never eats in the day and he has a really long commute so I do worry about him as he often goes more than 24 hours without food.

difficultpickle · 11/07/2012 11:30

Teriyaki Grin

My db doesn't eat lunch at work but eats loads of crap at home in the evenings so is overweight from that. He doesn't eat breakfast either.

WifiNappies · 11/07/2012 11:30

if I'm busy I can go without eating all day and then feel 'past it' at night and don't want much then either

it's not sustainable over long periods though surely!

maybe he's a 10-pint-a-night man and that's where the calories come from

difficultpickle · 11/07/2012 11:31

My db doesn't like tea or coffee either. In fact he sounds just like my db but afaik he doesn't work in a lab!

NurseBernard · 11/07/2012 11:32

I have a small lunch during the day - a sandwhich or a wrap and that is it. Water and black coffee as a snack.

I am sedentary all day, so I limit my calories a lot. The only way I can stay slim.

I notice other colleagues snacking way from time to time. I don't get that hungry because I'm busy, plus being so sedentary means I hardly need anything. On top of that, I'm not one of those people who can eat anything and not gain weight. Plus, the less you eat, the less you need to eat to feel full.

I can't imagine not eating anything but to the casual observer I eat a lot less than most people during the day mostly because other people eat too much IMHO.

Dons flame-proof suit.

Buttwart · 11/07/2012 11:32

My DH eats no breakfast and a tiny lunch.

He massively overeats in the evening and is therefore fat.

I have told him btw.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 11/07/2012 11:32

I dont eat lunch at work if my colleagues are about, I dont know why but I dont, I always wait till they go out to lunch....maybe your colleague is the same??

Maybe he goes into the loo and scoffs a bigmac whilst doing a poo Grin

BetterOnACamel · 11/07/2012 11:33

My DH doesn't eat all day, but that's because he's a food snob Hmm. So he'll eat something home prepared in the morning before getting in and need his dinner as soon as he arrives home in the evening. I graze all day and would just collapse without a snack every couple of hours :)

choceyes · 11/07/2012 11:33

TeriyakiWoo - yes he must do!

I'm not one of those that can eat huge amounts in one go and then nothing for the rest of the day. I'm hungry regularly throughout the day.

randomfennel - My husband is tall and skinny too. He eats porridge in the morning, peanut butter on toast at work for a snack and then a full lunch plus pudding, some more peanut butter toast or a pastry, and then comes home as a snack as big as my dinner, and then dinner, plus more snacking in the evening. Lucky sod! although he does cycle 20miles a day to work, and I think that burns nearly a 1000 cals a day.

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 11/07/2012 11:33

I usually go all day without eating, so does my husband.

Nancy66 · 11/07/2012 11:34

Lots of people are weird about eating in front of others

NettoSuperstar · 11/07/2012 11:34

I'm normal weight, slim I guess.
Haven't weighed myself for ages but somewhere around 8 stone, at 5'2, can fluctuate by a few pounds. Size 8.
I have a food blog, you can see the sorts of things I eat here

TheOneWithTheHair · 11/07/2012 11:36

It could be snacking in the evening especially if accompanied by a beer or two or a bottle of wine.

When I lived on my own I didn't eat during the day and ate crap in the evenings as I found it to isolating to eat on my own. It's always been a social activity to me. I was not thin then.
