To Support Tsonga, NOT Andy Murray?

I really don't like watching Murray play. That, and he appears to be a miserable bastard.

Tsonga, on the other hand, seems lovely. He plays well and is really nice in interviews.

My conclusion: I will be rooting for Tsonga in the semis of Wimbledon unless guilted into supporting Murray Grin

Redlac, there's no valid reason to let the truth get in the way of a good rant!

My point is this: no doubt Andy Murray is a talented and hardworking sportsman. He has undoubtedly earned the place he is at now. I do not question his merits re this.

However, I will not and can not support him and cheer him up. (Which would be a step up from acknowledging his merits.) That is because I consider the "anyone but England" comment nasty beyond the usual Scottish-English good humoured parring and I am not willing to cheer on a person who makes such a remark. Sorry.

This said, Wimbledon is not the X-Factor and my support (or anyone's, really) does not matter a farthing. Victory is not gained by the vote of the public and frankly, he could also win tomorrow even if the whole world hated him.

AllieZ · 07/07/2012 22:16

meant "cheer him on", sorry Grin

Well, when neither Tim Henman (English) or Des Kelly (English but with irish heritage) are offended and have defended Murray - and they were the ones actually there - I really can't see that there's a real issue.

But I guess the media are unlikely to take things out of context, being known for accurate reporting at all times. Especially the tabloids.

Today Murray has hit an all time high of being 97% British on the Murray-o-meter.

NaturalNatures · 08/07/2012 00:26

ahh I see.

I do despair at how shallow some people can be, refusing to get behind a great British sportsmen because he does not possess sufficient superficial charm or isn't handsome enough for their tastes. I would rather judge on Murray's achievements than how conventionally good looking and/or charming he is.

Andy is actually a very nice guy with a wicked dry sense of humour -he is more than happy to laugh at himself and is great company.
His comment "anyone but England" is one l hear often in Scotland and it is usually directed at the English football team and commentators who think they have the divine right to win all competitions and if they don't their has been a conspiracy against them. They are insufferable....
So when talking about the Eurochampionship last month l frequently heard the phrase "anyone but England" and l also used it myself.
This is coming form someone who was born in Scotland but whose parents, brother and grandparents etc are English.
Come the Olympics it is team GB l will be supporting.
However Good luck today Andy and no matter what the result you have made Scotland AND Britain proud.

Well, Andy got from me what he said about the EU football: anyone but. I would have preferred to see him beaten by a Frenchman (after all, who are the Swiss?) but it's ok this way, too. Federer was amazing, he deserved it.

AmIthatbad · 08/07/2012 18:49

WTF is EU football Allie? You clearly are very knowledgeable about - oh everything

AllieZ · 08/07/2012 19:50

WTF is EU football Allie?
Make an intelligent guess on what I meant, YouAreThatBad.

LadyBeagleEyes · 08/07/2012 19:57

Good to see the majority of the Murray haterz appear to a bit thick.

AmIthatbad · 08/07/2012 19:57

I would try the intelligent guess, but fear it would confuse you

You clearly are an idiot, who seems to get off on being confrontational for the sake of it.

Poor you, craving the attention.

yellowraincoat · 08/07/2012 20:10

Good article by Charlie Brooker about why it really doesn't matter if Andy Murray is a bit grumpy: poor old Andy
