To Support Tsonga, NOT Andy Murray?

frillylemons · 05/07/2012 16:38

I really don't like watching Murray play. That, and he appears to be a miserable bastard.

Tsonga, on the other hand, seems lovely. He plays well and is really nice in interviews.

My conclusion: I will be rooting for Tsonga in the semis of Wimbledon unless guilted into supporting Murray Grin

I supported Tsonga, too, just because I'd have liked to see a Frenchman beat Murray for that remark about supporting anyone but England. Though, of course, Tsonga is about as French as Andy British....

No probs though, Federer will do away with him tomorrow.

shesariver · 07/07/2012 19:25

Allie Andy Murray is British, last time I looked Scotland was still part of Britain. And the remark was a joke in reply to a comment Tim Henman made. But why let the facts spoil disliking him just because hes Scottish.

redlac · 07/07/2012 19:28

Are the English THAT insecure that when an 19 year old Scots tennis player on the wind up with his team mate says Anyone But England they take it as a HIGE slight and will forever bring it up EVERY time he appears on their telly?

Jeezo

redlac · 07/07/2012 19:28

HUGE

yellowraincoat · 07/07/2012 19:37

I think they are, redlac. They are obsessed with the old Anyone But England thing, more obsessed than people in Scotland.

Get over it, the English. You're also a very nice country.

AllieZ · 07/07/2012 19:45

shesariver I am aware that Scotland is in Britain but given Murray's above comment I don't think he believes he is.

redlac Sat 07-Jul-12 19:28:18 Are the English THAT insecure
No idea, redlac. I'm not English. Nor am I Scottish. Nor am I Welsh. I am British though... Wink

AmIthatbad · 07/07/2012 19:47

Re the "Anyone but England" remark. Are posters still going on about that and not bothering to understand the context in which it was said?

I give up Angry

AllieZ · 07/07/2012 19:50

Does anyone have a link to a clip about that "Anyone but England" remark? Just because I think I heard it when it was said and it seemed neither facetious nor light at the time. And I also seem to remember that it was "contextualised" later, a lot and with a lot of effort....

shesariver · 07/07/2012 19:55

At the end of the day he is Scottish and British, just like Tim Henman is English and British. And because in certain sports "Britain" competes and in others its the individual countries this situation arises. Why does it piss so many English people off that a Scottish person wouldn't support the English football team? After all it is not the BRITISH football team is it, or I think that's what some people think to be honest as they use England and Britain interchangeably. I dont think many English people would ever support the Scottish football team either.

yellowraincoat · 07/07/2012 19:57

So what if he supports Anyone But England? For a start, he was 19 when he said it. God knows I said a lot of prickish things when I was 19.

For another thing, many people support Anyone But England. Maybe it's time for the English to realise that and stop whinging every time someone doesn't kneel down and fellate their national cock. A little bit more humility from some sectors of England, and particularly the English media, would probably result in a lot more support from Scotland.

redlac · 07/07/2012 19:57

Can't find clip but here is an interview with Tim Henman who describes how him and the interviewer was winding Andy up cos Scotland weren't in the Final and when the interviewer asks him who he will be supporting Tim says Andy answered "quite righty and firmly tongue in cheek" Anyone but England

So take it from someone who was there that it was tongue in cheek and a bit of banter

redlac · 07/07/2012 20:01

I'll admit to supporting Anyone but England just the same as I support Anyone but Aberdeen or Anyone but Eastenders

I support who I support. All this "I'm English but I would support Scotland if they were in the final" is a bit condescending and since it ain't never going to happen purely pie in the sky thinking

yellowraincoat · 07/07/2012 20:02

redlac I was with you til you said Anyone but Aberdeen.

Toonser-hater.

Go Aberdeen.

redlac · 07/07/2012 20:03

Hehehe shut it ya sheep shagger sorry couldn't resist

CommunistMoon · 07/07/2012 20:03

Ah, the 'banter'. How much I don't miss it.

AmIthatbad · 07/07/2012 20:04

I don't have a link, but a quick google will show it was an interview with a sports columnist who was making fun of the Scotland team not qualifying. Andy Murray responded to that as he was being ribbed about the Scottish team. Henman joined in. This was 6 years ago, btw.

St Tim Henman was on 5live with Nicky Campbell and publicly stated that it was clearly a joking response to some good natured banter. And as St Tim was actually there at the time, I'm inclined to believe him.

The columnist Des Kelly also commented about how the remarks were taken completely out of context. He had been there too.

So, that is what you cited as your reason for wanting Tsonga to win.

Good ane

AmIthatbad · 07/07/2012 20:06

Redlac thanks for the link. I was so irritatedly intent on trying to type a summary that I missed loads of posts. Grin

AllieZ · 07/07/2012 20:08

things when I was 19.
Yeah. But presumably you were not interviewed on live tv by Tim Henman at the age of 19. And Murray did not get into that position overnight either, so he must have known he could not just say any old thing that came to his mind.

No idea why you posted this link: it's just Henman trying to explain it away as part of the "let's save what we can" PR damage-recovery campaign.

AmIthatbad · 07/07/2012 20:09

FFS

Angry

So it doesn't really matter what anyone says then

AllieZ · 07/07/2012 20:13

It only matters what Murray said.

CommunistMoon · 07/07/2012 20:16

AllieZ, I do sympathise but you are on a hiding to nothing with this one. Remember: if you're Scottish it's ok to make rude remarks about your neighbours constantly, and when anyone complains you accuse them of having no sense of humour, not being big enough to take it, etc.

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/07/2012 20:17

FFS get over it. I can't believe this is still being brought up,
English football fans do the same if one of their teams like Chelsea or Man United get through to European cup finals, I'm always surprised that they'd support the 'foreign' team before another club.
They're all in the English Premier League aren't they?

AllieZ · 07/07/2012 20:19

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/07/2012 20:27

Um, and vice versa Alliez.
But of course the English never, ever make jokes about the Scottish/Welsh/Irish, do they?
Poor little English, everybody is just so mean to them Grin

redlac · 07/07/2012 20:29

I posted that link cos it was Tim Henman (who was there) explaining what actually went on and why would Tim Henman be doing a PR face saving exercise?
