To think not keeping sugar in the house

Is fine if no one in your family takes it and it's poison anyway?

YANBU. Obviously. Why do you ask?

WorraLiberty · 04/07/2012 17:55

Depends on whether you have guests round regularly really.

A caddy full of sugar in the back of the cupboard won't give you nightmares.

YANBU unless you judge others for having sugar in their houses.
Do you have caster or icing sugar for baking?

Frontpaw · 04/07/2012 17:56

Cake! Cake! No sugar = no cake! Are you crazy??

minipie · 04/07/2012 17:56

I have guests but I don't have all sorts of things they might like. I don't have instant coffee or ordinary tea or biscuits.

KatherineKavanagh · 04/07/2012 17:56

Caster sugar for baking though

Hullygully · 04/07/2012 17:56

Would it really kill guests to have one cup of tea sans sucre?

OP posts:
Acumenoop · 04/07/2012 17:57

It's fine! I get told off for it but I remain unbowed.

ErikNorseman · 04/07/2012 17:57

It's a bit poor hosty and also it's necessary in some dishes. You couldn't make a pasta sauce without a bit of sugar.

SpottyTeacakes · 04/07/2012 17:57

We only have golden caster sugar (for baking) and often run out. We also only have Earl Grey tea. My friends know to bring their own tea Grin

imnotmymum · 04/07/2012 17:57

Hullygully · 04/07/2012 17:57

SUGAR IN PASTA SAUCE?

What fresh hell is this?

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiiLand · 04/07/2012 17:58

No, I hardly ever have sugar in the house, I started a thread about it a couple of weeks ago.

Nobody I know takes sugar so if someone comes round and needs sugar in their coffee I have to go rummaging around in the back of the cupboard for a pack of demerara left over from dd's cooking exploits.

It's something I never buy.

I should just steal some from Costa the next time I am there.

Itsjustafleshwound · 04/07/2012 17:58

But what would you use to cook with?

You would really be unreasonable if you replaced it with sweetners.

Sugar isn't poison - isn't it too much sugar poison ...

CeliaFate · 04/07/2012 17:59

I think it's rude to make guests drink tea without sugar because you don't like it. It won't kill me to drink tea without sugar, but I wouldn't like it or choose to drink it. Why are you concerned about other people's sugar intake?

WorraLiberty · 04/07/2012 17:59

Would it really kill guests to have one cup of tea sans sucre?

I don't take sugar in my tea but I'm sure it would be a lot nicer for them if you just kept some in the back of your cupboard and forgot about it until they visit.

What's the problem with keeping it in the house? Are you afraid you/your family will binge on it?

Itsjustafleshwound · 04/07/2012 17:59

Sugar cuts the acdity of tomatoes ...

GetOrfMoiiLand · 04/07/2012 17:59

I have a lump of jaggery for use in curries (a great hulk of palm sugar which looks like Tutankhamun's brain). I could offer that, with a chisel, I suppose.

I've had one bag of sugar in the cupboard for about 10 years and it's still not half empty.

Can sugar go off?

imnotmymum · 04/07/2012 18:01

I would kill someone though if I did not get my first cup of tea of the day without 2 sugars !! The rest of the day would be OK-Do you have sweetners??

GetOrfMoiiLand · 04/07/2012 18:01

I don't think so knees, am sure it has got a really long shelf life.

Hullygully · 04/07/2012 18:01

Sugar to cook with?

For the love of god WHY?
