Catching up on Gordon Ramsey's Behind Bars and apparently the prisoners get 5 choices for the evening meal!!! No fucking way! This is taking the mickey! No wonder this country is fucked up.....

OP posts:
griphook · 02/07/2012 20:21

Wow, I don't have five choices in my house

WowOoo · 02/07/2012 20:24

But they could be veggie, glucose intolerant or fussy bastards.
Cooks are prisoners so it keeps them busy I suppose.

BambieO · 02/07/2012 20:24

I was shocked by that too!

DamselInTornDress · 02/07/2012 20:26

No wonder some re-offend to get back in again Shock

laracroft2001 · 02/07/2012 20:26

I was shocked as well!!! That's 4 more choices than my law abiding husband gets! I understand a veggie option and alternatives for allergies... But FIVE options!!!

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 20:28

They spend more on prisoners meals than on submariners meals (OH is in one ATM). Sad

griphook · 02/07/2012 20:29

How much money do they get per day spent on meals

bogeyface · 02/07/2012 20:30

And the problem is.....?

Its not nouvelle cuisine you know! Or bussed in every evening from the Fat Duck, its still basic food that you or I wouldnt want for our evening meal. My ex FIL worked in the prison service and he said the food was horrible, so I wouldnt judge your DM brand judgey pants too highly.

And as for re-offending to get back in, that is such a stupid thing to say.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/07/2012 20:31

You do understand they have had their liberty removed. I wouldn't swap my ability to be free for a choice of 5 meals which are probably all disgusting.

bogeyface · 02/07/2012 20:32

hoik not judge

ffs

they should be on GRUEL

with maybe some bread on sundays

3littlefrogs · 02/07/2012 20:33

If you saw some of what passes for "meals" in some residential care homes, served up to old people who paid tax and NI all their lives, and are self funding £800 per week, you would really be annoyed.

CrustyBurd · 02/07/2012 20:33

They reoffend because the system's let them down. 5 choices a surprise yes, but given a choice between food and freedom, which would you choose?

likelucklove · 02/07/2012 20:33

I know from a local prison they have £1.23 a week to spend on a prisoner's 3 meals a day. And they definitely didn't have 5 options. Was sausage rolls, beans and chips for dinner if I remember rightly. Strictly rationed also, so they get the same portion sizes. Haven't watched the Gordon Ramsey programme.

hermioneweasley · 02/07/2012 20:34

I was shocked too.

MrsTP - their liberty hasn't been artibrarily removed, they committed a crime.

CrustyBurd · 02/07/2012 20:36

No, but its been removed all the same. Thats the point.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/07/2012 20:38

Of course it hasn't been arbitrarily removed. However, that is supposed to be the punishment. Not being able to take a walk, go to the shops, go down the pub, hug their kids when they want.

And, on the residential home comment... Lots of the people in homes won't actually have paid tax and NI their whole lives. Some are probably arseholes too, maybe some of them even committed crimes. When I worked with offenders there were some sweet old men on my books. Butter wouldn't melt but they had murdered people. We should feed everyone on good wholesome food, because it's right. Old people, offenders, everyone.

bogeyface · 02/07/2012 20:39

Their punishment is to have their freedom removed, not a decent diet.

bogeyface · 02/07/2012 20:39

THat is, not to have a decent diet removed.

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 20:40

"And as for re-offending to get back in, that is such a stupid thing to say."

They reoffend because it is no hardship being in there, and I say that as someone who is unfortunate enough to know a fair few who have been inside much more than once.

THere is a difference between accepting prison as an occupational hazard, and actively seeking to get back in there.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 20:42

Personally I think our armed forces should have more spent on their meals than UK prison inmates - but there you go.
