to think our neighbour is spying on me through a wall?

We live in a semi but a semi that backs onto another house, so our entire back wall is another house's entire back wall IYSWIM. So upstairs we share a wall on our bedroom, the landing and our bathroom.

The only noise I ever hear from their house is that noise of a pull switch light cord. And the only time I ever hear it is just after I go to the bathroom at night before I go to bed. Whatever the time. I never hear it before or after. Without fail it is just after I leave the bathroom. I go to bed at very random times (DH works away...). it could be 8pm, it could be 1am. Whatever time it is, I always hear that cord go within 20 seconds of me leaving the bathroom...

Uuummmmmm AIBU to think I might be being spied on..??!!! How do I find out for sure?!!

Grin basically our light switches don't do what you'ld expect them to, so much so that we had to take one off the wall and replace it with a cover because when guests pressed it thinking it just put off/on the lights near it, it messed up the lights all over the kitchen, and it took a load of syncronised switch flicking to get them back in order

that was only two "switch"es? Grin

Cherie: ... got caught having had cameras in the bathrooms of two houses he rented out (one he lived in and had housemates, another on the same street he rented out to students)

Beaumur: ... a chums house turned out to have been wired up with hidden cameras in all the girls bedrooms and their landlord/co-house mate had been watching and filming them

Lazyhazydaisy: I knew some girls at college for the first time and there landlord had hooked up a secret camera in their bathroom.

I think you are related!

Cheriefroufrou · 04/07/2012 00:46

I also went to school with someone whose dad owned a tanning shop that was found to have hidden cameras in it!

there's probably lots of similar stories because it does happen from time to time!

I've been out with the landlord's little sister when she had people laughing shouting abuse at her about it Sad.. forgetting that she would have been one of the people recorded in there since she visited a lot!

garlicbutt · 04/07/2012 00:59

I once fainted in a tanning shop. It was one of the stand-up type so I crashed out the door, nekkid except for two bits of tinfoil stuck to my eyes. No cameras required.

You could go on BGT!

Waits until morning to hear what happens with DH arrving back

Did it have to be on the week though that I'm home alone too? Ah the windows are locked...

Grin excellent

Migsy1 · 04/07/2012 07:26

But if it was inter-connected electrics, it wouldn't only just happen at the specific time of before the OP goes to bed.
Alien activity?

Paddingtonblue · 04/07/2012 07:32

Morning time!! Time to send your DH up the ladder and report back Smile

Mayisout · 04/07/2012 07:36

Has anyone asked if the bathroom is on the top floor.

Also if it is an old property there will be a loft. Send someone into the loft. Get in a handyman if you have to, maybe an electrician would be a good idea so that they can differentiaite between a requried cable and a suspicious one.

Sit outside neighbour's house in your car and see who comes out.

carabos · 04/07/2012 07:51

We have this, except it's the loo flushing, not lights going on and off. Whenever I flush, next door flushes too (loos are back to back in terrace houses iyswim). It happens too often to be coincidence. Funny thing is, while its usually on one side, occasionally it's on the other, which confuses me.

MaryPoppinsBag · 04/07/2012 08:17

Surely it is just a coincidence?

If you were going to spy on someone you wouldn't make it obvious would you?
I am not a peeping Tom but you wouldn't would you?

Who lives next door?

Mayisout · 04/07/2012 08:32

It could be the ballcock sort of twanging back into position.

Actually I mean the ballcock in the loft, if there is a water tank in the loft.

Sallyingforth · 04/07/2012 08:39

OP What happened after you left the loo without flushing?
If there was no noise that proves it was the loft tank.

laurenamium · 04/07/2012 09:58

What did DH find?!

Babylon1 · 04/07/2012 10:00

I NEED to know what it is now!!! Even though I know it will be something totally boring and conventional, I can't help hoping it's a bit exciting!!!

garlicbutt · 04/07/2012 10:08

Sallying - There was NO click after the flushless wee. This would seem to indicate it's a clunky ballcock, not a light switch at all.

However, OP's mother the poltergeist had switched the shower off, so clearly there are hidden cameras all over the house Hmm

Cheriefroufrou
Cherie's case of real bathroom camera experience does sound very similar to the one I knew of. And mine wasn't friends of friends/urban myth stuff either; it was people I knew.
Cherie, did they live in a place beginning with B?

Don't we have a programmed sense to know when someone is watching us? That's why quite often when you look at someone, they turn around.

I would agree with whoever said don't ignore your instincts.

garlicbutt · 04/07/2012 11:09

Don't we have a programmed sense to know when someone is watching us?

Correct answer: The jury's still out. FWIW, I think we do. But it goes haywire very easily - don't know about you, but reading this thread at night made me feel like there was somebody outside my windows! (There wasn't, obv.)

Sallyingforth · 04/07/2012 11:14

So it was the water tank valve as I said right at the beginning :)

The wiring fault is something else, but if it's connected to the shower it could be dangerous and should be checked out.

If there is a connection with the house next door (which I doubt) then one of you is using electricity on the other's meter and bill!

SoleSource · 04/07/2012 11:15

No, I didn't have the time last night garlic making up for it later though
