to think our neighbour is spying on me through a wall?

We live in a semi but a semi that backs onto another house, so our entire back wall is another house's entire back wall IYSWIM. So upstairs we share a wall on our bedroom, the landing and our bathroom.

The only noise I ever hear from their house is that noise of a pull switch light cord. And the only time I ever hear it is just after I go to the bathroom at night before I go to bed. Whatever the time. I never hear it before or after. Without fail it is just after I leave the bathroom. I go to bed at very random times (DH works away...). it could be 8pm, it could be 1am. Whatever time it is, I always hear that cord go within 20 seconds of me leaving the bathroom...

Uuummmmmm AIBU to think I might be being spied on..??!!! How do I find out for sure?!!

My theory is that when the house was split the electrics were not done properly.

So when you turn your bathroom light off, theirs goes off, or on.

So the click you hear is them putting it back to how it ought to be.

Sallyingforth · 03/07/2012 10:13

I still think it's the water tank.
Please try this simple test. Next time you use the toilet, don't flush it or run the taps to wash. Just stand quietly outside the door and listen for the sound.

TiggyD · 03/07/2012 10:28

If it's a shared loft area there could be somebody up there. Easy to check that out though. Check for usage. Maybe dust an area with flour and check for prints etc.

girlpancake · 03/07/2012 10:32

If you have a strip light in your bathroom, the electrical discharge of you switching it on or off may affect an appliance in their house, which they then have to switch off. as an example, switching on or off a strip light in our bathroom will turn on the touchbase lamp in a bedroom down the hall.

biddysmama · 03/07/2012 10:44

could it be a room with 2 switches, like attics have?

im still laughing at the jam butty!

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 15:55

OPs DH is home later isn't he? Hopefully he'll get into that attic! I know my DH would be because he is always paranoid about tha kind of thing!

Babylon1 · 03/07/2012 16:46

Any news yet?? I don't want to wait til bedtime for the next instalment!!

TandB · 03/07/2012 17:06

We are staying in a cottage at the moment where there is something wrong with the water/boiler. While I was fiddling about with the taps I kept hearing a pull type light-switch going on - just like the OP describes - that very distinctive double sound. I couldn't work out what it was as DP was outside and the only pull-cord is in the bathroom and I was too far away from the wall to next-door for it to be coming from there. I eventually figured out that it was something in the water system - everytime the tap stopped running I heard the noise.

Is it something like this? If it only happens at night it could be something to do with the water tank and when the hot water is on.

futureunknown · 03/07/2012 17:12

Have just caught up with this story. Looking forward to the update later!

shrinkingnora · 03/07/2012 17:16

Gnocci - do not under any circumstances read The Treatment by Mo Hayder. At all. No no no no no no. As you were.

fairyfriend · 03/07/2012 17:48

Just marking my place for if when the OP's DH comes out of the loft.

PeppermintCreams · 03/07/2012 18:16

Have you tried this very early in the morning?

Have you tried leaving the light on all evening? (For a change!)

Have you tried flushing the chain, but not switching off the light? (Might tell you if it's the hot water system rather than the electrics)

Have you tried switching the light on and off but not touching the toilet/hot water?

Hope it's dodgy electrics or the water system.

cinnamonnut · 03/07/2012 18:58

Has your DH gone in the loft yet?

Babylon1 · 03/07/2012 20:02
Hmm
NotQuiteWithItAtAll · 03/07/2012 20:03

this is definitely far more exciting than the crap on TV tonight Wine

Babylon1 · 03/07/2012 20:08

I hope the loft monster hasn't scoffed them up Confused

VivaLeBeaver · 03/07/2012 20:10

You can get water hammer in the pipes which could cause a noise a bit like a light pull I suppose. It can be caused by air in the pipes and will bang after using the taps.

Babylon1 · 03/07/2012 20:18

We suffer from water hammer viva - absolutely scared me shitless first time it happened Blush

Middle of the night, pitch black dark and I was about 36 weeks pregnant!!!

Bloody good job DH is a plumber and knew what it was else I'd have been packed and moved out by now!!! Grin

OAM2009 · 03/07/2012 20:21

I'm sure there's a perfectly innocent and boring explanation involving electrics or water systems or a badly-split house. OP, keep calm and carry on urinating whenever you want without fear.

While I'm here, I would just like to share that once, I went to my crying DS2 at 1am and as I put him back in his cot, I saw a green light shine off him, almost looking like it was coming out of his mouth Shock The hair on my arms stood on end. On reflection, I think it was probably a reflection of my engagement ring but.....

fedup2012 · 03/07/2012 20:32

Has anyone heard anything from OP or was the last time we heard from her just before midnight

Jux · 03/07/2012 20:37

Use a torch to go to the bathroom and listen carefully.

How's the loft?

pumpkinsweetie · 03/07/2012 20:41

I hope you are ok op?

cinnamonnut · 03/07/2012 21:11

Oh god, still no response...

NotQuiteWithItAtAll · 03/07/2012 21:30

the house opposite me have had their tv on pause now for 3 day's. Starting to think they are dead Hmm

Elkieb · 03/07/2012 21:38

Have you found anything? Have been reading this but can't work out if you're imagining things or if you have a point. Hope you are okay?
