I am fat. I have been for years. I rarely eat crisps or chocolate. I have a takeaway about twice a year. I have wine 3 times a week.
My work hours are crap so i go for hours not eating, then get starving. Work is constantly on the move and not sitting at a desk.

I am still fat.

I go to the gym 2-3 times a week and do a 2 hour dance class once a week.

I am still fat.

The last 3 weeks theres been a bootcamp at the gym do i have been 5 times a week.

I am still fat.

More than that. I am actually a kilo heavier than i was last week.

AIBU to be unutterably pissed off. And fat.

My weight crept up to 12.5 stones (2.5 overweight for me) when I worked full time at a desk in an office. Only way I lost it was to walk to work (20 mins each way) plus 3 gym sessions a week, plus stopped drinking wine and really watched portion sizes.

I have kept it off since having DD as I no longer do a desk job and I no longer have car so really do walk everywhere. I need to reign in my food (and wine Blush )again though as I've put on a few pounds since my holiday!

You probably need to watch portion size and do more exercise (seriously, I was shocked at how much I needed to do to make a difference!)

ohmygosh123 · 27/06/2012 18:10

Are you stressed - read somewhere that stress can help you keep the weight on. How about Clean & Lean book - all about eating natural foods. Baked beans is pretty much got most of the goodness processed out of it.

If what you are eating is true, then it must be frustrating for you ..... I'm trying to shift the stubborn pounds so my legs look reasonable so you have my sympathy! Try the thyroid test.

LizzieTaylor · 27/06/2012 18:11

sorry haven't read entire thread so may have been mentioned but have you been watching secret eaters? very interesting watch and might help you, the last one I watched the lady was overeating on healthy snacks.. seeds, coconut etc!! however i do think that as we get older our metabolism does slow down :( chin up!

QueenSconetta · 27/06/2012 18:13

Sorry haven't read whole thread, you could try slimming world green plan - almost all carbs and veg.

Silbury · 27/06/2012 18:24

Did SW many years ago. Stopped when i wss verging on bullimic, gorging on carbs and then starving for 2 days before wrigh in.
My relationship with my bod and food is not particularly healthy.

And i like cheese and cake and wine and its not bloody fair.

I'm sorry this is getting you down OP but as other oysters have said, it's your way of eating that's the problem.

You need to give yourself a kick start with a savage attack on the carbs. Go high protein, as high as you can tolerate, for a month. You will be amazed at how different you feel and you will lose weight.
If you don't like meat or fish, then it is going to be tough, but cottage cheese, yoghurt and plant proteins from grains like quinoa, buckwheat (not couscous) are good sources.

Tbh, you sound like a friend of mine. She's about 5ft5 and 16 stone. She has recently started talking about needing to lose weight, but bats off all advice with "oh my back", "oh my job", " oh my social life", " oh my DP" ...means I can't. She's in what I believe is called the pre-contemplative phase of change and there's a way to go yet before action will be taken.

You have recognised the problem. Give yourself a pat on the back, open your mind to the change and let it happen, accepting that it may take time to get comfortable enough to override your inner negative.

carabos · 27/06/2012 18:43

Sorry - contemplative stage not pre-contemplative.

DilysPrice · 27/06/2012 18:47

I love the fact that you've corrected "pre-contemplative" but not noticed you called us all oysters. I think we should all be oysters from now on.

ErikNorseman · 27/06/2012 18:49

It's very easy to accidentally over eat when you don't eat regular meals. You go for too long without eating then binge. So you might think you are only eating 2 meals a day but in those meals you could be eating too many calories.

You need to do a food diary for a week and see how many calories you are consuming. I'm losing weight through sticking to 1500 cals a day and I have one slice toast with butter and marmite or peanut butter, sandwich with 2 slices bread, boiled egg or smear of houmous, salad, low fat mayo. Snack is fruit or a biscuit Then normal dinner which needs to be around 750 cals.

I expect you are consuming too many calories without realising.

featherbag · 27/06/2012 18:54

Silbury have you tried the new WW plan? I joined at the very end of February after realising my weight had crept up to 16st 5lbs after having DS, and 5'6'' I was big. I'm under 14st now, and although I know I've got a way to go I already feel so much better and it really hasn't been all that hard! I've enjoyed the fact WW makes me think about what I'm eating and how I'm cooking, plus unlike (I found) SW it teaches you portion control. Today I put DS in his baby carrier and walked over the road to the supermarket. He weighs 7lbs less than my weight loss so far, and I honestly don't know how I managed to walk around carrying that extra weight, I was paggered by the time I got back!

I work 13hr shifts too, so the plan's had to be flexible enough to fit around that.

carabos · 27/06/2012 18:55

Yes dilys I noticed that but then decided I quite liked oysters instead of posters so left it. Visions of a bed of oysters all chattering away inconsequentially while waiting for the tide...

featherbag · 27/06/2012 18:57

Oh, and I second Erik's suggestion of eating too much without realising - I use my iPhone to track my WW points, and seeing in black and white exactly what I've eaten and how many of my daily points each item costs really makes you think! For example, the 3 slices of toast with butter you mentioned earlier would be about 9-10 points, and I only get 30 per day, although I started on 36. But 1 slice of WW bread with butter and a poached egg is only 5 points, and keeps you feeling full for ages.

StuntGirl · 27/06/2012 19:00

Can I please recommend myfitnesspal.com? For the first week or two use it simply as a diagnostic tool - log every single piece of food and drop of liquid that passes your lips and see how your diet actually looks, on paper, in black and white, every last calorie accounted for.

Once you know that you'll have the power to make specific changes and see how they affect you.

You definitely need to aim to increase your fruit and veg intake too.

I would also advise getting a heart rate monitor to see how hard your work outs work you and how many calories you're actually burning. Again, knowledge is power.

Finally I echo the previous posters who recommend another visit to the doctor. This is your health we're talking about, don't let your doctor make you feel bad about asking for her help. If she doesn't listen or you don't feel comfortable facing her, change to a different doctor.

Ultimately weight loss can be a long and tiring journey and it's about finding what works for you to give you the healthy, happy life you deserve.

Not something I would recommend long term, but I've been doing SlimFast for nearly two weeks. I generally hate any kind of faddy diet like this, but I need a kick start. I need to lose 20lbs (at least), and the SlimFast is kind of helping me get started iyswim? I've seen those first 5lbs drop off, and now I'm really motivated. Am going to drop down to just having it for breakfast and having a healthy lunch instead of the second shake (when I get back from holiday).

Sounds like you do a really good amount of exercise, so you should be really proud of that. I agree with pps though, you need to start eating breakfast, and try the little bits of healthy food, and often route. Oh, and give up most of the bread. (Which is easy for me to say, I would cry if I had to give up bread). At least for a little bit. I know, dieting is rubbish. Why does cake have to be so tasty?!

glastocat · 27/06/2012 19:04

If you have an iPhone or iPad, please read the virtual gastric band thread on here. Some of us are having fantastic success! I am also very fat, but have just lost 2 stone in 7 weeks! It's been easy too.

ThatVikRinA22 · 27/06/2012 19:05

you have my sympathy OP, im not actually officially overweight, but my BMI is at the very top end of healthy.

i used to be really naturally slim and its a shock now im not. I eat very little, yet i cant lose a pound, and i also exercise aswell. I also work shifts so my eating can be really erratic even though its healthy,

today i had cereal and skimmed milk for breakfast
lunch was a small greek salad and a fat free yoghurt
dinner was chicken chilli noodles.

i have had a fun size bag of maltesers, i am doing the 30 day shred daily but today i had personal safety at work and spent all day running around a gym so not done it tonight.

i have no idea why i seem to lose a few pound, then put it back on. i do have a glass or wine each evening except when im working lates or nights....im waiting until later for my glass tonight, i wonder if i should try low carbing for a while....what is low carbing? is it a diet plan?

AnnaMosity · 27/06/2012 19:09

you need to STOP eating such big portions
i found that excercise was pointless without food reduction

dinkystinky · 27/06/2012 19:12

By going for long periods between food, and then indulging in carb heavy meals, you're sticking your body into feast and famine mode which makes it really hard to lose weight. I'd suggest eating little and often (more like 3 small meals, two small snacks between) - more protein, less carbs - and drink lots of water and you'll probably see results.

ByTheWay1 · 27/06/2012 19:13

You have my sympathy too OP.... I was a lardy 15stone 10 5 weeks ago - now 15st 1..... Five weeks, 9 pounds nice and slow and steady, I do not want great big wiggly folds of excess skin.

Weight Watchers works for me... portion control... writing every single TASTE of food you have down... learning the full signals so not overeating.... all that stuff.

Trouble is you have to want to lose weight - hence I only started 5 weeks ago Blush up til then the taste of sour cream and onion Pringles was winning....

Silbury · 27/06/2012 19:23

I can't do SW or WW. Truly. I get obsessed with counting amd writing down etc.
Not healthy at all.

Work is a problem. Maybe i'll give it up.

Will make a concerted effort to eat fruit. And less of everything else.

cocolepew · 27/06/2012 19:37

You would have other symptons if it was your thyroid, not just putting on weight.
