I am fat. I have been for years. I rarely eat crisps or chocolate. I have a takeaway about twice a year. I have wine 3 times a week.
My work hours are crap so i go for hours not eating, then get starving. Work is constantly on the move and not sitting at a desk.

I am still fat.

I go to the gym 2-3 times a week and do a 2 hour dance class once a week.

I am still fat.

The last 3 weeks theres been a bootcamp at the gym do i have been 5 times a week.

I am still fat.

More than that. I am actually a kilo heavier than i was last week.

AIBU to be unutterably pissed off. And fat.

Definitely have your thyroid checked as givememarzipan said. I spent 2 years on weight watchers loosing the same 3 pounds over a period of 3 months, absolutely starving, and putting them back on over the space of a week when I gave up.

After going on thyroxine I have gone back to ww after 3 kids and lost 2.5 stone in six months. It has made such a difference.

You need to check your portions, weigh everything for a week and check the calories on of those free calorie checking webpages. Once you realise what portions you should be eating it will make more sense

lambinapram · 27/06/2012 17:46

There are books on low carb vegetarian diets. I eat loads of protein shakes, nuts, cheese. eggs, antipasti...

AWomanCalledHorse · 27/06/2012 17:47

Without sounding like a pervy trucker; Do you find yourself sweating & it hard to talk after a Curves workout? It looks very, very low impact (which I guess is good for your back, but not good for getting into the 'heartrate zone'.
Could you do something else low impact for your back like swimming or spinning?

Silbury · 27/06/2012 17:47

I tentatively mentioned it to a doctor a year ago. She was so rude i never went back.

"Butter and spreads are fats in hiding!"

Butter isn't a fat in hiding! It's out and proud, wearing a t-shirt saying "I'm fat, me" and boogying it's dazzling yellow way down the high street.

Silbury - sympathies. Your diet sounds ok to me. I expect the not eating breakfast might be a bad thing to do though.

shushpenfold · 27/06/2012 17:48

Eat breakfast (raise metabolic rate) then you don't feel need to scoff carbs.

Eat far more fruit and veg and DO have fruit and veg snacks...they raise your metabolic rate too.

Stop with the caffeine/carb existence....your blood sugars will be plummeting and you'll feel generally more crap and depressed.

Think health for a big rather than weight and see how that goes. Low GI is a good one too.

DilysPrice · 27/06/2012 17:48

Hours of phoning it in at the gym (which is what it sounds like you do) will not achieve the same effects as high intensity interval training, which will do wonders for your metabolism. However at your weight you may need to take medical advice before moving from lengthy low intensity training to OMG I'm Going To Die! training.

shushpenfold · 27/06/2012 17:49

...for a BIT, not for a big!

Silbury · 27/06/2012 17:49

I am sweaty. Its as high impacty as you make it. Heart rate gets up too.

Theres no way i am baring this body in public in a swimming costume EVER.

Some light weight training is also good for raising metabolism. You don't have to go all-out body building, just get some hand weights (2-5kg) and do 20-30 mins with those three times a week (in addition to cardio).

Other good proteins for vegetarians: lentils, beans, barley, cous cous etc. Really good for bulking out stews/casseroles/curries.

becstarsky · 27/06/2012 17:53

YANBU. That sucks.

From what you describe you?re not eating enough protein and not enough veg.

I?d suggest trying the following:-

  • Cut carbs. No bread, biscuits, cakes, rice cakes or crackers, only wholegrain rice with meals (and halve your normal rice portion)
  • limit portions of fruit.
  • Double all your non-starchy veg and salad portions.
  • Increase your lean protein intake ? chicken, fish, lean beef etc. Flavour with spices and herbs rather than sauces. If you use sauces, make home-made tomato based ones rather than creamy and shop bought.
  • Look for hidden sugar (that low-fat korma sauce will have been full of added sugar to offset the low fat content ? be careful when something is labelled ?fat free? especially ? look at the overall calorie content.)
  • Go for a long walk as often as you can ? IME walking is better for weight loss than intense bursts of cardio.
  • Drink more water ? at least one and a half litres per day.
forevergreek · 27/06/2012 17:54

Type of food and portion size?

A boiled egg and a slice of toast for example is around 250 calories. Add another egg, another piece of toast, lashings of butter and your probably more at 600 for a ' light meal'

Do carbs feature as main dinner or just a portion of?

Silbury · 27/06/2012 17:54

Humph.

waterlego6064 · 27/06/2012 17:54

You don't have to completely give up carbs if you don't want to. If I try that, it just makes me want them more. Just stick to the good ones!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 27/06/2012 17:55

HAve you tried making a food diary, including every single thing that passes your lips and being brutally honest about it? I surprised myself doing that, I can tell you!

SofaKing · 27/06/2012 17:56

Can you go to a different doctor? It is just a blood test for thyroid and makes all the difference.
I'd rather see vile scary doctor than do all the exercise you're doing :-). No prizes for guessing how I got fat!

becstarsky · 27/06/2012 18:00

Aw Silbury I feel for you, I really do. But those of us who are losing weight aren't doing it without effort. One of my colleagues said to me 'you're lucky, you're just naturally slim, aren't you?' Ha! Am I heckers like! FWIW, my diet is =

Breakfast - fat free natural yoghurt with fresh berries, or porridge made with skim milk

Lunch - lean protein with big salad (today was chicken with watercress, rocket, tomatoes, grated carrot)

Dinner - tonight it's lean bolognaise made with extra lean beef and frylight instead of oil, served on shredded cabbage instead of pasta

Snacks - apple, two clementines.

So... NOT naturally slim. Very very few people are IMO.

Ratata · 27/06/2012 18:03

It sounds like you don't actually eat that much until the afternoon at times, if you go a full morning with no food but being up and about and busy at your job then I'm sure your body goes into starvation mode and starts storing fat when you do eat. I think. I'm not expert.

I did Diet Chef and lost a stone in about a month or 6 weeks. I couldn't keep it up as I went off the food but it does work.

Back on the healthy eating wagon again now. I feel your pain! On Monday alone I turned down 3 cakes that people kept bringing around. Old me would have eaten every single piece. Have your tried writing down every single thing you eat and drink for a week? I found I was scoffing biscuits and not really thinking about it. It's only now that I realise how many I ate!

I've lost a bit of weight and typical day for me is:

Breakfast: bran flakes and skimmed milk
Snack: banana or apple (careful not to eat too many bananas as I'm sure they can contribute to weight gain!)
Lunch: half of a brown baguette stuffed with veggies and a sliver of filling (like tuna or coronation chicken)
Snack: from my Graze box
Dinner: poached eggs with salad and rye bread, or fajitas made with quorn, or quorn burgers with salad.
Drinks: tea or water

Exercise: 40mins cycling, 15 mins cheerobics (some random exercise prog on tv)

I really feel for you as I understand how hard the battle with weight is. Don't give up though, take a look at your diet, cut down a bit on carbs and eat more consistently through the day. You can do it!

And YANBU.

PurplePidjin · 27/06/2012 18:03

I had, this. I'd slowed my metabolism down so every single calorie was stored.

Try this:

Breakfast - plain cereal or porridge with dried fruit

Lunch - rice cakes or oat cakes with marmite and cheese, cherry toms/carrot sticks/cucumber

Dinner - as you are, maybe cut the portions (use a smaller plate!)

Snack on fruit

You'll stop feeling sick at breakfast after a few days, believe me. Start with a tiny amount and build up, it's psychosomatic!

I'm now pg so not dieting or watching weight particularly, but the eating habits have stuck. I lost 2 stone over 9 months :)

cluelessnchaos · 27/06/2012 18:05

Are you absolutely knackered and cold. I have figured out when I can't be bothered going for a blood test because I am sooo tired,
I need my thyroxine dose increased. Also the rush of adrenaline from excercise sometimes masks my symptoms. My advice would be to tell the doctor you are cold tired and can't lose weight to get yourself a blood test.

cluelessnchaos · 27/06/2012 18:07

Yooohooo purple we were on early dec2012 thread
