OP, yours is only one interpretation of this song. Another could be that it is about someone who is emotionally distant. There are no direct references to violence in the exert you have posted.

Even older songs had 'overtones'

Very old song. Not sure who sang it now. But i was watching something on telly recently where it was pointed out that this was a song about a young girl being talked into having sex, back in the days when a girl got 'a reputation'. Never thought about it like that!

I thought it was about a girl trying to get out of an abusive relationship and turning to her parents for help. she realises he doesn't really care about her, that all they do is fight, that he has isolated her from her friends; she knows she has to end it but is still in love with him so she turns to her parents for help.

Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls; had both DD's (7 & 4) singing just the "suicidal" chorus. They didn't know any of the other words. Was lovely trying to explain to them what it was.

PS; I'm all for telling kids things and being open, but not about suicide at 4 thanks.
