fedupofnamechanging · 24/06/2012 21:08

I'm sort of with you there, Duffy. Cannot be doing with extra time and penalties. 90 minutes is too much football long enough!

rubberglove · 24/06/2012 21:11

'the more wound up the person gets, the more we find it funny'

Er that is just goading and bullying Hmm

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 21:13

jealousy @ not getting to the euros pfft it is football the people who are posting are mostly those who don't give a shiney shite about football no matter the team

SoleSource · 24/06/2012 21:14

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 21:15

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 21:15

yellow come live in the same village as me then - I'm in Fife; there's plenty of it about. Sad

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 21:15

no not over yet sigh dh is watching it

Saltire · 24/06/2012 21:16

Is that why it maybe ends in violence? really? With Scotland fans?

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 21:16

But rubberglove, it's REALLY not. I think it's just a type of humour that the English don't really "get".

What does it MATTER that some in Scotland don't support the English? I think that's what we find funny and part of the reason we do it. We go "anyone but England" and they get SO pissed off, as if it matters. And it really doesn't.

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 21:20

Maybe that's why it doesn't bother me, Tapir, because the anti-English stuff is a joke for me. Where I come from (Aberdeenshire) there's very little serious anti-English feeling. Ribbings, sure. I've never seen anyone be beaten up or told to fuck off to England, nothing like that.

rubberglove · 24/06/2012 21:21

I have found at times it has a nasty element to it. Not always no, but sometimes.

And I am English, married to a Scotsman and have lived in Scotland for 15 years.

But that's life and of course I am not generalising. My dh is sitting here screaming for England.

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 21:21

Football ends in violence because some of the fans like to fight.

It's not really about club/team loyalties, or who the best player/team/nation is. They like to scrap, and football matches are a convenient meeting place.

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 21:23

rubberglove, sure there is with some people. That's not the sort of winding up I mean though. But you get that everywhere.

LST · 24/06/2012 21:23

YAB Immensely U Op!

MetalliMa · 24/06/2012 21:24

yabu
I hate football, but hope they win

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 21:27

yellow It was quite a suprise for me, tbh. I'd seen very little of it when we used to visit dh's family here, but when we actually moved into the village it was a totally different story.

We had a neighbour who moved rather than live next door; there have been fights between 'incomers' and locals, my son was badly bullied because I'm english.

We've been here for over 10yrs now, and because dh grew up here, things have improved, but not by much. Sad

rubberglove · 24/06/2012 21:30

True, true.

I must add my closest friends are Scottish as are my ILs. They have never been nasty, though some of them wouldn't support England, but that is okay.

It is more random people, say in the pub, where I have encountered it. But then I would say that is just the people they are. They would find something to be nasty about whatever their nationality.

I don't get the anyone but Murray thing either. Just because he isn't smooth and has a temper. But he is the best player Britain has seen for a long time. Henman wouldn't have stood a chance against these guys

redlac · 24/06/2012 21:30

mrsjay it is a rubbish claim to fame mentioning Fergie but there are very few options for sporting here's from here! I'll only mention willie Carson in future :).

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 21:30

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 21:32

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 21:32

Tapir, that's shit. People can be wanks.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 24/06/2012 21:35

Yellow, see, I feel like it does matter. It does matter to me that the two biggest nations on this tiny island can't be supportive of each other. It's just not nice. It matters to me that my family in Scotland are all so anti English that they take the ribbing thing too far and seem to get genuinely pissed off when my Gran (a proper Scot who lives in England) celebrates the jubilee by decorating her house in union flag bunting as if she has somehow betrayed them.

And they are lovely people who are so welcoming and so much fun when I visit, but then they would rather England lose than see their own family have some fun with the whole rubbish that is football. It's wierd!

redlac · 24/06/2012 21:35

mrsjay I'm an incomer - originally from a wee village 7 miles away! People can guess I'm an incomer cos of my accent ;) I've not got that Stirling burr after living here for 13 years

fedupofnamechanging · 24/06/2012 21:35

Could be wrong but possibly the Murray thing came about because early on in his career, I think he said he was Scottish, not British. That's fine, but if someone actively doesn't want to be part of Britain, then they are unlikely to gain support from people who are British but not Scottish.

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 21:37

redlac Dh husband comes from clackmanan area my dad almost had him frisked by immigration Grin
