to move my child to another school because of PJ wearing parents and other things.....

Hi there, your views would be appreciated.

My ds is currently in yr 3 (8 yrs old) he is in a mixed class of years 3 and 4. Since Christmas I have had really serious doubts about the school he is in.

He has asked to move schools a couple of times in the past 6 months and I am seriously considering it. BUT I know at 8 this is a massive change for him. He is a social little boy who makes friends easily and can articulate his thoughts really well. The issues I have with the school are as follows.

  1. Parents dropping their children off still wearing their PJs. I not talking lounge wear here, I'm talking fullish sheep adorned pink things. I turn up at school dressed for work, smart and ready for the day.
  1. Leading on from 1 is the reason for the PJ wearing. There is a very high number of unemployed parents in the school. I live in a nice part of not a very nice area IYKWIM. Unemployment has always been a problem. I have lived in this area for over 30 years and alot of the children in ds class are 4th and 5th generation unemployed. So I assume the pj wearing is because they have nothing to get ready for? I need to add that sometimes the children are picked up from school at 3pm with said parents still adorning the sheep attire.

I have never been unemployed so struggle to empathise really with the other parents. I work in recruitment and know there are always things you can do to improve your chances but I have never been there so know I dont fully understand the effect unemployment has on you.

  1. There are ALOT of kids in the class that are morphing into absolute horrors. The behaviour is getting worse as each school year passes. Once lovely little 4 year olds are now 8 year old swearing, disrespectful kids. My ds went over to one of them the other day to show him his homework. The other kid looked at my ds as if he were stupid and said I dont do homework - I wouldnt dare!.
  1. I'm aware this is getting long so going to cut it short. The teachers appear to spend alot of time on discipline - taking actual teaching time away from the good kids.
  1. In the past out of 26 kids, there are approximately 8 that behave really well. If the other 18 are playing up, the whole class has been punished. This really annoyed me.

I could go on and I think I have answered my own question seeing it in black and white but would still appreciate your comments.

Thanks fifties x

Oh! Blush

usualsuspect · 23/06/2012 22:33

I know SP, everyone is quite normal in my close. we never have any drama

Cynner · 23/06/2012 22:34

I was also thinking about families that just can't up and move to a " nicer place". I reckon most parents are concerned about their children's education, and want the best possible for them. Having concerns about the classroom and being concerned about what other parents are wearing are two entirely different things.

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 23/06/2012 22:36

Closest to drama was the bouncy castle that took off yesterday and 3 grown men were chasing round the cul-de-sac (posh Grin) while the children laughed. Obviously the type of hooligans that have ASBOs

usualsuspect · 23/06/2012 22:38

A bouncy castle in the street, how common

Cynner · 23/06/2012 22:44

SP! I love a good bouncy partay! I would have put on my jams and joined the fun!
actually when attending bouncy parties, I dress like a right tart, never know whom you might meet!"

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 23/06/2012 22:44

I'm saving up for some paw print pjs for when my nipper starts school!

Can't wait.

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 23/06/2012 22:45

I know. There was even a gazebo and children were enjoying their selves! I was in utter shock. Think ASBO tots might have even joined in the fun Grin

nannyof3 · 23/06/2012 22:51

Ok.. On the very bad behaviour and swearing, i would remove him.....

On the bit about parents wearing pj's to skool, yep this is lazy but very funny

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 23/06/2012 22:53

Oh and not one pj wearing specimen insight!

usualsuspect · 23/06/2012 22:55

I don't have a problem with lazy tbh.

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 23/06/2012 22:57

My pjs aren't fit for human viewing.

TrollopDollop · 23/06/2012 22:59

YANBU. My DD went to the nursery attached to the local school similar to the one you describe. At the last minute we were offered a reception place at another school in a largely middle class nice area. I don't regret my decision to move her. I posted about it at the time and got called a snob etc. I don't care. It was the right choice for us.

LilQueenie · 23/06/2012 23:03
  1. you would hate america my cousin lived there and parents regularly drove to mcdonalds in pjs and slippers for breakfast because they really couldnt care less what other people thought. A good thing really, who wants to live based on what people think we should do/wear/be seen in.

2)are you confident in your job? if so how come they are all unemployed and for so long?

3)I wouldnt worry about the behavour of other kids, I would however hope your child does not pick up on your snobbish ways of looking down on others. What is on the outside does not always, in fact rarely, bare the same as on the inside.

4)if teachers didnt discipline how would they regain control in order to teach the class at all?

5)I agree. The whole class should not be punished for a few. I would go speak to the teachers etc about that one.

DamselInTornDress · 23/06/2012 23:05

Going back about 6 years, it wasn't PJ wearing mums that turned the sneer lip of the snobs. It was track suit wearing mums. I remember the chat at the time. Oh I don't wear track suits and I don't even own a pair of trainers.

Yeah love right.

PooPooInMyToes · 23/06/2012 23:11

johnthepong where abouts is that?

LilQueenie · 23/06/2012 23:21

pmsl I live across from the nursery/school. If we were running late you would probably see me wearing the pjs that look like a tracksuit with trainers on. and no I wouldnt care. getting my child to school on time is more a priority.

Dontbeamug · 23/06/2012 23:22

OP you are probably long gone but YANBU. Move your son somewhere decent ffs!

I don't understand the whole MN obsession with 'oooh, you're such a snob'. Why would anyone want to send their child to a school like this? IME the people who defend the unemployed masses the most are people who have never had any contact with them and know nothing about them. They have this deranged idea of some kind of working class heroes, struggling to earn an honest crust.

There are people who do not want to work, have no concept of work, have been brought up to aspire to nothing more than a new flatscreen after a fraudulant insurance claim. I used to work with some of them in a previous life. Why are people in denial about this? Why would anyone want their child to grow up surrounded by children from homes with no work ethic or ambition? Why does that make the OP a snob?

This genuinely baffles me.

DamselInTornDress · 23/06/2012 23:24

No one is disputing that the OP should move her son.

It's the PJ wearing mum reason she gave that is bogus nonsense to bring a whole demographic down with one sweeping statement that doesn't sit well. That's the snobby bit.

usualsuspect · 23/06/2012 23:25

The flatscreens made an appearance then , funny how so many Mnetters used to work with the great unwashed.

PooPooInMyToes · 23/06/2012 23:27

I agree with Dontbeamug.

EchoBitch · 23/06/2012 23:29

Have we had the hot tubs in the gardens and the swimming pools yet usual?

EchoBitch · 23/06/2012 23:31

Too lazy to RTFT. Grin

And i've got my PJ's on and i'm smoking a fag...INDOORS!

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 23/06/2012 23:32

echo me too! Won't say the brand but its council estate worthy Grin

EchoBitch · 23/06/2012 23:33

All my DC went to the nearest school.

And they're all ok.

Not a criminal record between all 15 3 of them.
