Young Earth Creationists? Really believe it? Really?

balotelli · 22/06/2012 06:36

Cant believe that anyone actually thinks that the earth was created by a god 6000 years ago!

I have to agree with Richard Dawkins who said they are either ignorant, stupid or insane.

If you do believe it, explain dinosaurs!

Not much honest debate is possible if you're always more concerned with trying not to cause offence and keeping everyone happy.

It's very easy to believe in YEC, you just have to have the right mindset and run the logic backwards.

Start with 1) The bible is 100%, literally accurate
(backed up by 1b) 2 Timothy 3:16 - the bible is right because it says it is)

So 2) Anything that conflicts with biblical teachings must be wrong, no matter how good the evidence for it seems.

  1. Things that are wrong come from the devil, who is trying to lead believers away from the Lord.

You just hang onto those three precepts, and it all hangs together. The human brain is an amazing thing, really. I suppose it's testament to the power of evolution, ironically! Grin

MissRepresentation · 22/06/2012 10:36

and some people believe such rubbish that its hard not to point and laugh. Tango's cultish Scientologist friends for example, follow a "religion" (not recognised in UK) that was invented by a drug addled sci fi writer in the 50's that make you pay lots of money to learn the secrets of the immortal aliens, and how you can live forever.

I really don't care if sniggering at such bollocks makes me mean and nasty.

Tangointhenight · 22/06/2012 10:37

Miss I didn't comment on this thread to defend creationism, but to point out that it isn't acceptable to mock people in the way OP has, for their beliefs. I will leave it at that.

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 10:38

Fanks Tango.

Thing is Miss, what I don't know about Creationists ain't worth knowing (slight exaggeration, but you know what I mean). If someone had said, "Now then now then. This Young Earth business. All seems a bit far fetched to me but it'd be very interesting to know why and how people believe this. Anyone got ony light to shed?" I would have been right in there, out of a childhood stuffed to the gills with this stuff.

Note - I don't believe it myself, but I would have been more than happy to get stuck in.

But although the OP may have been genuinely interested, it just came across as another MN pillory-the-nutjobs post, so I got a dose of the Sads instead.

I do realise that I should be made of sterner stuff, by the way. I claim PMT privileges and Norks of Misery.

Tangointhenight · 22/06/2012 10:38

It's good you don't care because that's exactly what you are.

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 10:39

Boulevard that's a very efficient bit of nutshelling Grin Grin

GrahamTribe · 22/06/2012 10:41

So to say a religion is a load of bollocks is not on but to say someone's mean and nasty is fine?

Okaaaay.

Miss, I'm with you honey, I'm only in favour of censoring if it starts with taking religion out of education and polirical affairs. Wink

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 10:43

Graham, you are at one with Christ Himself on that - 'Render to Caeser what is Caeser and to God what is God's', total separation of church and state and all that Grin

MissRepresentation · 22/06/2012 10:44

OK. Personally I would say that the scientologists who trick people out of their money, particularly and purposefully vulnerable people, are the mean and nasty ones, but if your christian values tell you its me for pointing that out, thats up to you.

MissRepresentation · 22/06/2012 10:47

And really, you're just attacking my belief system, aren't you? Just because its different to yours...get thee back to thou bible and learn to turn thou other cheek (Matthew 5.38 if you're unsure).

SarahStratton · 22/06/2012 10:48

I don't see the problem with mocking people for ther bonkers beliefs. And I think what you are really saying is "you can't mock ME for MY beliefs".

David Icke and the lizards, happy to mock them, for example. Scientologists and their spaceships full of enlightened aliens, they're pretty daft too.

What makes your faith so special and protected? WE can all laugh at things we find silly and funny. You do it, you just don't like it when its too close to home.

^ That.

Tangointhenight · 22/06/2012 10:48

And at what point in this thread did I claim to be a Christian?

MissRepresentation · 22/06/2012 10:51

I was talking to the others too, but apologies if you find being thought of as a christian offensive. My bad.

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 10:53

Sarah - Please see me upthread saying upthread that I don't actually mock people for their (other) beliefs - it's a little bit unfair to assume that I was only a mite wounded because it was my particular background that was the subject of the thread. a lot of people are more than capable of thinking that mocking anyone's faith is a bit Not On.

Mind you. Obviously you don't have to believe me when I say that

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 10:54

Miss I haven't been offensive to you have I?!

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 10:54

upthread upthread upthread Hmm

Concentrate Jodie!

Tangointhenight · 22/06/2012 10:54

Now you're just making assumptions and putting words into my mouth. I am not a Christian, but I don't have any problem with those who are, again as I said at the start, what people choose to believe is their own affair and they shouldn't be ridiculed for it,no matter how daft you or anyone else thinks it is.

Miss I apologise for implying you are mean and nasty, that wasn't acceptable either so I'm sorry.

MissRepresentation · 22/06/2012 10:56

well if you are allowed to express your beliefs, why aren't I? Telling me I'm not allowed to mention my belief for example that scientologists are bonkers fraud peddling cult members is a bit offensive if you are advocating for everyone to express their beliefs unfettered. Perhaps you meant only religious people are allowed to express themselves?

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 10:56

Can I just say this is so like another playground thingy - Lots of taunting and chanting of 'Bible Basher' etc. etc., borne with a certain amount of childish patience, swiftly followed by 'oh piss off and leave me alone'...and then lots of delighted capering: "aaaaaah you're a crap Christian you are, you swore! aren't you suppose to be NICE! MISS MISS Jodie swore and I'm going to tell her SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER" Grin

MissRepresentation · 22/06/2012 10:57

apology accepted. I am a bit mean in fact, but I wouldn;t say nasty. Grin

SarahStratton · 22/06/2012 10:58

That wasn't aimed at you in particular, why assume it was? Hmm

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 10:59

I didn't, I was just joining in generally - all right, surely?!

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 22/06/2012 11:00

(And since there are only 2 or 3 people on the thread taking my point of view, it was always going to be a roughly 50-50 chance!)
