To think that "fanny" is not an offensive name for female genitalia ?

My ex was taken aside by our 3.5 yr old daughter's nursery key worker today, and told that they didn't like her using the word fanny, and that she should use the word noony instead?!

Is there a difference in offensiveness levels between these 2 names? Always thought that fanny was just a harmless kids name for vagina/vulva whatever, am I wrong?

Noony?
Confused

I think it should be called a vagina.

mumnosbest · 21/06/2012 00:18

Less offensive than other words i can think of. We just use vagina or dd says 'gina
never heard of a nooney. Is it the 5th teletubby?

WorraLiberty · 21/06/2012 00:19

What's with all the nicknames?

It's a vagina

Or if she doesn't want to use the word for some strange reason, 'privates' would suffice I suppose.

Nagoo · 21/06/2012 00:22

That don't mean vagina. They mean vulva surely. Why would a 3 yo have any cause to talk about their vagina?

Anyway fanny is fine. Noony is a new word to me. I think that jungle singing woman says it. Stacey so

piprabbit · 21/06/2012 00:22

noony? honestly? they are loons!

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 21/06/2012 00:22

Noony? Weird. My mother's word of choice when we were young was 'mary'. Huh? Don't know where the fuck she got that one from. Even at age 6 I was all eye rolly and like, 'er, no Mother, it's called a vagina'. Grin

Nagoo · 21/06/2012 00:22

Soloman?

ComposHat · 21/06/2012 00:22

A noony for fuck sake! What idiotic nonsense.

Vagina all the way for me.

Empusa · 21/06/2012 00:23

Noony is fucking awful!

Nagoo · 21/06/2012 00:24

Hairy Mary. Roffle.

My niece called it a weasel. :)

WTF is a 'noony'?

In the US 'fanny' means the same as 'bum' or 'bottom' 'in the UK.

What's wrong with children calling their genitalia by its proper names - vulva, vagina, penis, testicles?

Wonder what your dd's nursery would make of 'fanjo' or 'lady garden' Grin

ComposHat · 21/06/2012 00:25

I'd have had more sympathy if they'd said, 'we'd prefer it if the children used the proper terms to refer to their genitals' but to start arbitrating between two pet names/euphemisms is ridiculous.

Birdsgottafly · 21/06/2012 00:26

I think that if a slang word is going to be used, then Fanny isn't really a nice word for a child to be using.

Wheezo · 21/06/2012 00:27

Not as far as I'm aware - the only difference would be if there was the potential for confusion over whether fanny meant bottom or not as it does in the States but if there's no room for that here then what's the problem?

For no earthly reason we have ended up using the word "winky" for DS's penis and I don't really know why but I don't like the word "willy" so much but DS sometimes says that picked up from nursery and there's nothing I could possibly object to even if I don't personally like it (especially having adopted the word winky Hmm). At an appropriate point in time (DS is just 2) we'll explain correct word is penis.

They are being ridiculous. As long as they know what she means (which they obviously do) what's the problem?

I would speak to the key worker if you can and ask what the problem is and what their particular concern is apart from it not being the same as their word?

Also my DS's key worker used to use the word kaka for poo, again not a word I liked but not something I was going to object to especially when she and he got on so well. I just didn't adopt it and DS never picked it up.

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 21/06/2012 00:28

Ha, Nagoo, 'weasel' literally just made me snort wine out of my nose. Hilarious.

24HourPARDyPerson · 21/06/2012 00:28

Have to admit don't like 'fanny'.
Maybe because i first ran into the term as used among teen lads. But whatever your 'home' word is should be ok for nursery i'd have thought.

It would be great to have an equivelant word to willy.

WorraLiberty · 21/06/2012 00:30

Exactly Compos

I had a weird drunken conversation with my friend once and we decided women get a bit of a raw deal when it comes to body parts.

These words make me cringe for some inexplicable reason...

Vagina
Bosoms
Labia
Areola
Gusset

But they're still not as cringeworthy as some of the nicknames people come up with! Grin

labia

I used to work with a right randy git of a bloke who was nicknamed behind his back as Lawrence, as in Lawrence of the Labia.

24HourPARDyPerson · 21/06/2012 00:37

Christ tethers I'd hate to hear a toddler say that

mumnosbest · 21/06/2012 00:37

Kaka or cak is equivalent of shit in a lot of languages

Staceisace · 21/06/2012 00:39

It just makes me think of that annoying new Irn Bru advert!
