To think that "fanny" is not an offensive name for female genitalia ?

My ex was taken aside by our 3.5 yr old daughter's nursery key worker today, and told that they didn't like her using the word fanny, and that she should use the word noony instead?!

Is there a difference in offensiveness levels between these 2 names? Always thought that fanny was just a harmless kids name for vagina/vulva whatever, am I wrong?

Can't help but feel that whatever gets used for a girls bits is somehow automatically considered ruder

Couldn't agree more bluegrass

cupofteaplease · 21/06/2012 18:08

Mango Yes they've known about periods for a long time! They call tampons magic sticks. They are 7 and 5 now and I think I'll need to introduce proper terms sooner rather than later!

Hownoobrooncoo · 21/06/2012 18:16

Growing up fanny was considered rude and on a par with beaver (a favourite in my area) or pussy.

Dancergirl · 21/06/2012 18:18

Well we say noony in our house!

I don't particularly like fanny, just sounds a bit crude to me.

And there's NOTHING wrong with little girls not using the correct term.....they'll learn them soon enough. My dds know the terms vagina, vulva etc but they generally use noony.

freerangeeggs · 21/06/2012 18:24

Fanny is a rude word. I prefer minge, it's much more genteel. Maybe vadge at a push.

Grin

LOL @ noony

Dancergirl · 21/06/2012 19:07

I'm really surprised how few people have heard of noony!

Loads of people say noony round here!

outmonday · 21/06/2012 19:24

My grandmother Frances was always called Fanny so it hasn't been considered rude for very long.
I wouldn't want a small child saying Vulva or buttocks, have never heard of Noony, we said Front Bottom and bottom.

Leni75 · 21/06/2012 19:25

We would have a problem with this in the kindergarten my DS goes too as there is a girl there called Fanny (not in UK btw). my DD has just started speaking words really clearly and obviously sees this girl daily when we drop DS off and pick him up and spent most of last week shouting FANNY at the top of her voice randomly...... but she refers to hers (her choice) as her bum and DS refers to his(again the word he started using) as his Noonoo and therefore she also uses the word noonoo

Kaka is commonly used in European countries to refer to poo and specifically baby poo and not in an offensive way AFAIK

JollyBear · 21/06/2012 19:43

I don't understand why people think vulva sounds unpleasant said by a child. It is just a normal word for a body part. I'd be more shocked by fanny.

There is a street near us which used to be called Cunt Alley. It was changed by the Victorians to Bashful Alley!

StuntGirl · 21/06/2012 20:39

Dancergirl You think there's nothing wrong with teaching them incorrect terminology about their own bodies? How odd.

Clawdy · 21/06/2012 20:53

Always used the word crotch in our family. Sounds better than the twee names and anatomically more correct than vagina.

AKE2012 · 21/06/2012 20:58

Noony WTF!!!!???

In our house it is fanny and willy. Always hs been and always will be. A lot of words can be offensive depending on how they are used.

Id just like to say to the world. GET A GRIP.

duckdodgers · 21/06/2012 21:06

The Irn Bru advert is hilarious Grin

Error · 21/06/2012 21:10

I know several girls/women called Fanny, from my country of origin :)

I don't think 'fanny' is offensive and it's certainly bonkers to make her say noony. Or whatever. But I would prefer 'front bottom' too - obvious what it's referring to & not going to upset anyone.

snoopyplaystennis · 21/06/2012 22:14

Valium - can you give me the name of that book please? It sounds good

WhiteWidow · 21/06/2012 22:33

I don't like any of the words! I have never once in my life said vagina. I say fanny, but I don't like it it's just what everyone else I know says.

I would have never referred to it as a fanny when I was younger though. I think that's a more adult word.

ComposHat · 21/06/2012 22:34

A lot of streets called Grape street were formerly known as Gropecunt street and were formerly red light areas. Threadneedle Street where the bank of England is called thus, for the same reason.

tethersend · 21/06/2012 23:38

My dad lives near Fanny Hands Lane.

gonenative · 21/06/2012 23:46

Thanks all for your thoughts - I genuinely had no idea "fanny" was considered an adult / rude word! Think it is probably a regional thing.

Beef curtains it is then.

Wheezo · 21/06/2012 23:51

Oh gosh OP do you think the nursery will accept that, beef curtains is terribly common tho' - how about carpaccio curtains? Wink

gonenative · 21/06/2012 23:52

Wheezo, love it.

Gropecunt Lane

TouTou · 22/06/2012 00:03

Gonenative - I wonder about that too, the regional thing! I've never thought of fanny as being anything other than a sister name to willy. Just roughly, where do you live?

Love carpaccio curtains tho. It's vair poesh.
